ٱللَّهُ Allah لَآ (there is) no إِلَـٰهَ God إِلَّا except هُوَ Him ٱلْحَىُّ the Ever-Living ٱلْقَيُّومُ the Sustainer of all that exists ٢
Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.

He has sent down upon you, [O Muḥammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel

مِن From قَبْلُ before (this) هُدًۭى (as) guidance لِّلنَّاسِ for the mankind وَأَنزَلَ And (He) revealed ٱلْفُرْقَانَ ۗ the Criterion إِنَّ Verily ٱلَّذِينَ those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve[d] بِـَٔايَـٰتِ in (the) Verses ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah لَهُمْ for them عَذَابٌۭ (is) a punishment شَدِيدٌۭ ۗ severe وَٱللَّهُ And Allah عَزِيزٌۭ (is) All-Mighty ذُو All-Able ٱنتِقَامٍ (of) retribution ٤
Before, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Criterion [i.e., the Qur’ān]. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allāh will have a severe punishment, and Allāh is Exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.

Indeed, from Allāh nothing is hidden in the earth nor in the heaven.

هُوَ He ٱلَّذِىٓ (is) the One Who أَنزَلَ revealed عَلَيْكَ to you ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Book مِنْهُ of it ءَايَـٰتٌۭ (are) Verses مُّحْكَمَـٰتٌ absolutely clear هُنَّ they (are) أُمُّ the foundation ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ (of) the Book وَأُخَرُ and others مُتَشَـٰبِهَـٰتٌۭ ۖ (are) allegorical فَأَمَّا Then as for ٱلَّذِينَ those فِى in قُلُوبِهِمْ their hearts زَيْغٌۭ (is) perversity فَيَتَّبِعُونَ [so] they follow مَا what تَشَـٰبَهَ (is) allegorical مِنْهُ of it ٱبْتِغَآءَ seeking ٱلْفِتْنَةِ [the] discord وَٱبْتِغَآءَ and seeking تَأْوِيلِهِۦ ۗ its interpretation وَمَا And not يَعْلَمُ knows تَأْوِيلَهُۥٓ its interpretation إِلَّا except ٱللَّهُ ۗ Allah وَٱلرَّٰسِخُونَ And those firm فِى in ٱلْعِلْمِ [the] knowledge يَقُولُونَ they say ءَامَنَّا We believe بِهِۦ in it كُلٌّۭ All مِّنْ (is) عِندِ from رَبِّنَا ۗ our Lord وَمَا And not يَذَّكَّرُ will take heed إِلَّآ except أُو۟لُوا۟ men ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ (of) understanding ٧
It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allāh. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

Indeed, those who disbelieve - never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allāh at all. And it is they who are fuel for the Fire.

كَدَأْبِ Like behavior ءَالِ (of the) people فِرْعَوْنَ (of) Firaun وَٱلَّذِينَ and those who مِن (were) from قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ before them كَذَّبُوا۟ They denied بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا Our Signs فَأَخَذَهُمُ so seized them ٱللَّهُ Allah بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۗ for their sins وَٱللَّهُ And Allah شَدِيدُ (is) severe ٱلْعِقَابِ (in) [the] punishment ١١
[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They denied Our signs, so Allāh seized them for their sins. And Allāh is severe in penalty.

قَدْ Surely كَانَ it was لَكُمْ for you ءَايَةٌۭ a sign فِى in فِئَتَيْنِ (the) two hosts ٱلْتَقَتَا ۖ which met فِئَةٌۭ one group تُقَـٰتِلُ fighting فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah وَأُخْرَىٰ and another كَافِرَةٌۭ disbelievers يَرَوْنَهُم They were seeing them مِّثْلَيْهِمْ twice of them رَأْىَ with the sight ٱلْعَيْنِ ۚ (of) their eyes وَٱللَّهُ And Allah يُؤَيِّدُ supports بِنَصْرِهِۦ with His help مَن whom يَشَآءُ ۗ He wills إِنَّ Indeed فِى in ذَٰلِكَ that لَعِبْرَةًۭ surely (is) a lesson لِّأُو۟لِى for the owners ٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِ (of) vision ١٣
Already there has been for you a sign in the two armies which met [in combat at Badr] - one fighting in the cause of Allāh and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesight. But Allāh supports with His victory whom He wills. Indeed in that is a lesson for those of vision.

زُيِّنَ Beautified لِلنَّاسِ for mankind حُبُّ (is) love ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِ (of) the (things they) desire مِنَ of ٱلنِّسَآءِ [the] women وَٱلْبَنِينَ and [the] sons وَٱلْقَنَـٰطِيرِ and [the] heaps ٱلْمُقَنطَرَةِ [the] stored up مِنَ of ٱلذَّهَبِ [the] gold وَٱلْفِضَّةِ and [the] silver وَٱلْخَيْلِ and [the] horses ٱلْمُسَوَّمَةِ [the] branded وَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ and [the] cattle وَٱلْحَرْثِ ۗ and [the] tilled land ذَٰلِكَ That مَتَـٰعُ (is) provision ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ (of) life ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ (of) the world وَٱللَّهُ but Allah عِندَهُۥ with Him حُسْنُ (is an) excellent ٱلْمَـَٔابِ [the] abode to return ١٤
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allāh has with Him the best return [i.e., Paradise].

Say, "Shall I inform you of [something] better than that? For those who fear Allāh will be gardens in the presence of their Lord beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and purified spouses and approval from Allāh. And Allāh is Seeing [i.e., aware] of [His] servants -

Allāh witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

إِنَّ Indeed ٱلدِّينَ the religion عِندَ near ٱللَّهِ Allah ٱلْإِسْلَـٰمُ ۗ (is) Islam وَمَا And not ٱخْتَلَفَ differed ٱلَّذِينَ those who أُوتُوا۟ were given ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Book إِلَّا except مِنۢ from بَعْدِ after مَا [what] جَآءَهُمُ came to them ٱلْعِلْمُ [the] knowledge بَغْيًۢا out of envy بَيْنَهُمْ ۗ among them وَمَن And whoever يَكْفُرْ disbelieves بِـَٔايَـٰتِ in (the) Verses ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah فَإِنَّ then indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah سَرِيعُ (is) swift ٱلْحِسَابِ (in taking) account ١٩
Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allāh is Islām. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allāh, then indeed, Allāh is swift in [taking] account.

فَإِنْ Then if حَآجُّوكَ they argue with you فَقُلْ then say أَسْلَمْتُ I have submitted وَجْهِىَ myself لِلَّهِ to Allah وَمَنِ and (those) who ٱتَّبَعَنِ ۗ follow me وَقُل And say لِّلَّذِينَ to those who أُوتُوا۟ were given ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Book وَٱلْأُمِّيِّـۧنَ and the unlettered people ءَأَسْلَمْتُمْ ۚ Have you submitted yourselves فَإِنْ Then if أَسْلَمُوا۟ they submit فَقَدِ then surely ٱهْتَدَوا۟ ۖ they are guided وَّإِن But if تَوَلَّوْا۟ they turn back فَإِنَّمَا then only عَلَيْكَ on you ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ ۗ (is) to [the] convey وَٱللَّهُ And Allah بَصِيرٌۢ (is) All-Seer بِٱلْعِبَادِ of [His] slaves ٢٠
So if they argue with you, say, "I have submitted myself to Allāh [in Islām], and [so have] those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture and [to] the unlearned, "Have you submitted yourselves?" And if they submit [in Islām], they are rightly guided; but if they turn away - then upon you is only the [duty of] notification. And Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants.

Do you not consider, [O Muḥammad], those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to the Scripture of Allāh that it should arbitrate between them; then a party of them turns away, and they are refusing.

And among the People of the Scripture is he who, if you entrust him with a great amount [of wealth], he will return it to you. And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a [single] coin, he will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over him [demanding it]. That is because they say, "There is no blame upon us concerning the unlearned." And they speak untruth about Allāh while they know [it].

It is not for a human [prophet] that Allāh should give him the Scripture and authority and prophethood and then he would say to the people, "Be servants to me rather than Allāh," but [instead, he would say], "Be pious scholars of the Lord because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied."

They have been put under humiliation [by Allāh] wherever they are overtaken, except for a rope [i.e., covenant] from Allāh and a rope [i.e., treaty] from the people [i.e., the Muslims]. And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allāh and have been put under destitution. That is because they disbelieved in [i.e., rejected] the verses of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.

سَنُلْقِى We will cast فِى in قُلُوبِ (the) hearts ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve ٱلرُّعْبَ [the] terror بِمَآ because أَشْرَكُوا۟ they associated partners بِٱللَّهِ with Allah مَا what لَمْ not يُنَزِّلْ He sent down بِهِۦ about it سُلْطَـٰنًۭا ۖ any authority وَمَأْوَىٰهُمُ and their refuge ٱلنَّارُ ۚ (will be) the Fire وَبِئْسَ and wretched مَثْوَى (is the) abode ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ [of] the wrongdoers ١٥١
We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allāh of which He had not sent down [any] authority. And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers.

وَلَقَدْ And certainly صَدَقَكُمُ fulfilled to you ٱللَّهُ Allah وَعْدَهُۥٓ His promise إِذْ when تَحُسُّونَهُم you were killing them بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۖ by His permission حَتَّىٰٓ until إِذَا when فَشِلْتُمْ you lost courage وَتَنَـٰزَعْتُمْ and you fell into dispute فِى concerning ٱلْأَمْرِ the order وَعَصَيْتُم and you disobeyed مِّنۢ from بَعْدِ after مَآ [what] أَرَىٰكُم He (had) shown you مَّا what تُحِبُّونَ ۚ you love مِنكُم Among you مَّن (are some) who يُرِيدُ desire ٱلدُّنْيَا the world وَمِنكُم and among you مَّن (are some) who يُرِيدُ desire ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚ the Hereafter ثُمَّ Then صَرَفَكُمْ He diverted you عَنْهُمْ from them لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ ۖ so that He may test you وَلَقَدْ And surely عَفَا He forgave عَنكُمْ ۗ you وَٱللَّهُ And Allah ذُو (is the) Possessor فَضْلٍ (of) Bounty عَلَى for ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ the believers ١٥٢
And Allāh had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them [i.e., the enemy] by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet (ﷺ)] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love. Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the believers.

۞ إِذْ When تُصْعِدُونَ you were running uphill وَلَا and not تَلْوُۥنَ casting a glance عَلَىٰٓ on أَحَدٍۢ anyone وَٱلرَّسُولُ while the Messenger يَدْعُوكُمْ was calling you فِىٓ [in] أُخْرَىٰكُمْ (from) behind you فَأَثَـٰبَكُمْ So (He) repaid you غَمًّۢا (with) distress بِغَمٍّۢ on distress لِّكَيْلَا so that not تَحْزَنُوا۟ you grieve عَلَىٰ over مَا what فَاتَكُمْ escaped you وَلَا and not مَآ what أَصَـٰبَكُمْ ۗ (had) befallen you وَٱللَّهُ And Allah خَبِيرٌۢ (is) All-Aware بِمَا of what تَعْمَلُونَ you do ١٥٣
[Remember] when you [fled and] climbed [the mountain] without looking aside at anyone while the Messenger was calling you from behind. So Allāh repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you [of victory and spoils of war] or [for] that which had befallen you [of injury and death]. And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.

ثُمَّ Then أَنزَلَ He sent down عَلَيْكُم upon you مِّنۢ from بَعْدِ after ٱلْغَمِّ the distress أَمَنَةًۭ security نُّعَاسًۭا slumber يَغْشَىٰ overcoming طَآئِفَةًۭ a group مِّنكُمْ ۖ of you وَطَآئِفَةٌۭ while a group قَدْ certainly أَهَمَّتْهُمْ worried [them] أَنفُسُهُمْ (about) themselves يَظُنُّونَ thinking بِٱللَّهِ about Allah غَيْرَ other than ٱلْحَقِّ the truth ظَنَّ (the) thought ٱلْجَـٰهِلِيَّةِ ۖ (of) [the] ignorance يَقُولُونَ saying هَل Is (there) لَّنَا for us مِنَ from ٱلْأَمْرِ the matter مِن any شَىْءٍۢ ۗ thing قُلْ Say إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْأَمْرَ the matter كُلَّهُۥ all (of) it لِلَّهِ ۗ (is) for Allah يُخْفُونَ They hide فِىٓ in أَنفُسِهِم themselves مَّا what لَا not يُبْدُونَ they reveal لَكَ ۖ to you يَقُولُونَ They say لَوْ If كَانَ was لَنَا for us مِنَ from ٱلْأَمْرِ the matter شَىْءٌۭ anything مَّا not قُتِلْنَا we would have been killed هَـٰهُنَا ۗ here قُل Say لَّوْ If كُنتُمْ you were فِى in بُيُوتِكُمْ your houses لَبَرَزَ surely (would have) come out ٱلَّذِينَ those who كُتِبَ was decreed عَلَيْهِمُ upon them ٱلْقَتْلُ [the] death إِلَىٰ towards مَضَاجِعِهِمْ ۖ their places of death وَلِيَبْتَلِىَ And that might test ٱللَّهُ Allah مَا what فِى (is) in صُدُورِكُمْ your breasts وَلِيُمَحِّصَ and that He may purge مَا what فِى (is) in قُلُوبِكُمْ ۗ your hearts وَٱللَّهُ And Allah عَلِيمٌۢ (is) All-Aware بِذَاتِ of what ٱلصُّدُورِ (is in) the breasts ١٥٤
Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allāh other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allāh." They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, we [i.e., some of us] would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that Allāh might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allāh is Knowing of that within the breasts.

إِنَّ Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ those who تَوَلَّوْا۟ turned back مِنكُمْ among you يَوْمَ (on the) day ٱلْتَقَى met ٱلْجَمْعَانِ the two hosts إِنَّمَا only ٱسْتَزَلَّهُمُ made them slip ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ the Shaitaan بِبَعْضِ for some مَا (of) what كَسَبُوا۟ ۖ they (had) earned وَلَقَدْ And surely عَفَا forgave ٱللَّهُ Allah عَنْهُمْ ۗ [on] them إِنَّ indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah غَفُورٌ (is) Oft-Forgiving حَلِيمٌۭ All-Forbearing ١٥٥
Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] - it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allāh has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.
— Come To Light
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you ٱلَّذِينَ who ءَامَنُوا۟ believe[d] لَا (Do) not تَكُونُوا۟ be كَٱلَّذِينَ like those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieved وَقَالُوا۟ and they said لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ about their brothers إِذَا when ضَرَبُوا۟ they traveled فِى in ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth أَوْ or كَانُوا۟ they were غُزًّۭى fighting لَّوْ If كَانُوا۟ they had been عِندَنَا with us مَا not مَاتُوا۟ they (would have) died وَمَا and not قُتِلُوا۟ they (would have) been killed لِيَجْعَلَ So makes ٱللَّهُ Allah ذَٰلِكَ that حَسْرَةًۭ a regret فِى in قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ their hearts وَٱللَّهُ And Allah يُحْىِۦ gives life وَيُمِيتُ ۗ and causes death وَٱللَّهُ and Allah بِمَا of what تَعْمَلُونَ you do بَصِيرٌۭ (is) All-Seer ١٥٦
O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so Allāh makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allāh who gives life and causes death, and Allāh is Seeing of what you do.
— Come To Light
وَلَئِن And if قُتِلْتُمْ you are killed فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah أَوْ or مُتُّمْ die[d] لَمَغْفِرَةٌۭ certainly forgiveness مِّنَ from ٱللَّهِ Allah وَرَحْمَةٌ and Mercy خَيْرٌۭ (are) better مِّمَّا than what يَجْمَعُونَ they accumulate ١٥٧
And if you are killed in the cause of Allāh or die - then forgiveness from Allāh and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].
— Come To Light
وَلَئِن And if مُّتُّمْ you die أَوْ or قُتِلْتُمْ are killed لَإِلَى surely to ٱللَّهِ Allah تُحْشَرُونَ you will be gathered ١٥٨
And whether you die or are killed, unto Allāh you will be gathered.
— Come To Light
فَبِمَا So because رَحْمَةٍۢ (of) Mercy مِّنَ from ٱللَّهِ Allah لِنتَ you dealt gently لَهُمْ ۖ with them وَلَوْ And if كُنتَ you had been فَظًّا rude غَلِيظَ (and) harsh ٱلْقَلْبِ (at) [the] heart لَٱنفَضُّوا۟ surely they (would have) dispersed مِنْ from حَوْلِكَ ۖ around you فَٱعْفُ Then pardon عَنْهُمْ [from] them وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ and ask forgiveness لَهُمْ for them وَشَاوِرْهُمْ and consult them فِى in ٱلْأَمْرِ ۖ the matter فَإِذَا Then when عَزَمْتَ you have decided فَتَوَكَّلْ then put trust عَلَى on ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah يُحِبُّ loves ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ the ones who put trust (in Him) ١٥٩
So by mercy from Allāh, [O Muḥammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allāh. Indeed, Allāh loves those who rely [upon Him].
— Come To Light
إِن If يَنصُرْكُمُ helps you ٱللَّهُ Allah فَلَا then not غَالِبَ (can) overcome لَكُمْ ۖ [for] you وَإِن and if يَخْذُلْكُمْ He forsakes you فَمَن then who ذَا (is) ٱلَّذِى the one who يَنصُرُكُم can help you مِّنۢ from بَعْدِهِۦ ۗ after Him وَعَلَى And on ٱللَّهِ Allah فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ let put (their) trust ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ the believers ١٦٠
If Allāh should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allāh let the believers rely.
