Learn the pillars of Salah

The pillars (arkan) are the essential acts without which the prayer is not valid. The list below follows the widely taught scholarly summary; details and numbering differ slightly between the schools of fiqh.

1

Standing (Qiyam)

Standing upright for obligatory prayers, for whoever is able.

2

Opening Takbir

Saying "Allahu Akbar" to enter the prayer (Takbirat al-Ihram).

3

Reciting Al-Fatihah

"There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book." (Sahih al-Bukhari 756)

4

Bowing (Ruku)

Bowing with the back straight and hands on the knees.

5

Rising from Ruku

Standing up straight again after bowing.

6

Prostration (Sujud)

Prostrating twice in every rak'ah on the seven body parts: forehead with nose, both hands, both knees and both feet.

7

Sitting between the two prostrations

Sitting briefly and calmly between the two sujud.

8

Final Tashahhud and sitting for it

Reciting the tashahhud while sitting in the last rak'ah.

9

Tranquility (Tuma'ninah)

Being calm and still in every position - the Prophet ﷺ told a man who rushed: "Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." (Sahih al-Bukhari 757)

10

Taslim

Ending the prayer with "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah".

Obligatory (fard) rak'at of the five daily prayers
