All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel [i.e., Jacob] had made unlawful to himself before the Torah was revealed. Say, [O Muḥammad], "So bring the Torah and recite it, if you should be truthful."

فَمَنِ Then whoever ٱفْتَرَىٰ fabricates عَلَى about ٱللَّهِ Allah ٱلْكَذِبَ [the] lie مِنۢ from بَعْدِ after ذَٰلِكَ that فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ then those هُمُ they ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ (are) the wrongdoers ٩٤

And whoever invents about Allāh untruth after that - then those are [truly] the wrongdoers.

— Come To Light

قُلْ Say صَدَقَ (has) spoken the truth ٱللَّهُ ۗ Allah فَٱتَّبِعُوا۟ then follow مِلَّةَ (the) religion إِبْرَٰهِيمَ (of) Ibrahim حَنِيفًۭا (the) upright وَمَا and not كَانَ he was مِنَ of ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ the polytheists ٩٥

Say, "Allāh has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists."

إِنَّ Indeed أَوَّلَ (the) First بَيْتٍۢ House وُضِعَ set up لِلنَّاسِ for the mankind لَلَّذِى (is) the one which بِبَكَّةَ (is) at Bakkah مُبَارَكًۭا blessed وَهُدًۭى and a guidance لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ for the worlds ٩٦

Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah] - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.

فِيهِ In it ءَايَـٰتٌۢ (are) signs بَيِّنَـٰتٌۭ clear مَّقَامُ standing place إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ۖ (of) Ibrahim وَمَن and whoever دَخَلَهُۥ enters it كَانَ is ءَامِنًۭا ۗ safe وَلِلَّهِ And (due) to Allah عَلَى upon ٱلنَّاسِ the mankind حِجُّ (is) pilgrimage ٱلْبَيْتِ (of) the House مَنِ (for one) who ٱسْتَطَاعَ is able إِلَيْهِ to [it] سَبِيلًۭا ۚ (find) a way وَمَن And whoever كَفَرَ disbelieved فَإِنَّ then indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah غَنِىٌّ (is) free from need عَنِ of ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ the universe ٩٧

In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it [i.e., the Ḥaram] shall be safe. And [due] to Allāh from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves [i.e., refuses] - then indeed, Allāh is free from need of the worlds.

قُلْ Say يَـٰٓأَهْلَ O People ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ (of) the Book لِمَ Why تَكْفُرُونَ (do) you disbelieve بِـَٔايَـٰتِ in (the) Verses ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah وَٱللَّهُ while Allah شَهِيدٌ (is) a Witness عَلَىٰ over مَا what تَعْمَلُونَ you do ٩٨

Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allāh while Allāh is Witness over what you do?"

قُلْ Say يَـٰٓأَهْلَ O People ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ (of) the Book لِمَ Why تَصُدُّونَ (do) you hinder عَن from سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah مَنْ (those) who ءَامَنَ believe[d] تَبْغُونَهَا seeking (to make) it عِوَجًۭا (seem) crooked وَأَنتُمْ while you شُهَدَآءُ ۗ (are) witnesses وَمَا And not ٱللَّهُ Allah بِغَـٰفِلٍ (is) unaware عَمَّا of what تَعْمَلُونَ you do ٩٩

Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you avert from the way of Allāh those who believe, seeking to make it [seem] deviant, while you are witnesses [to the truth]? And Allāh is not unaware of what you do."

— Come To Light

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you ٱلَّذِينَ who ءَامَنُوٓا۟ believe[d] إِن If تُطِيعُوا۟ you obey فَرِيقًۭا a group مِّنَ from ٱلَّذِينَ those who أُوتُوا۟ were given ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Book يَرُدُّوكُم they will turn you back بَعْدَ after إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ your belief كَـٰفِرِينَ (as) disbelievers ١٠٠

O you who have believed, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back, after your belief, [to being] unbelievers.

— Come To Light

وَكَيْفَ And how (could) تَكْفُرُونَ you disbelieve وَأَنتُمْ while [you] تُتْلَىٰ is recited عَلَيْكُمْ upon you ءَايَـٰتُ (the) Verses ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah وَفِيكُمْ and among you رَسُولُهُۥ ۗ (is) His Messenger وَمَن And whoever يَعْتَصِم holds firmly بِٱللَّهِ to Allah فَقَدْ then surely هُدِىَ he is guided إِلَىٰ to صِرَٰطٍۢ a path مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ straight ١٠١

And how could you disbelieve while to you are being recited the verses of Allāh and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds firmly to Allāh has [indeed] been guided to a straight path.

— Come To Light

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you ٱلَّذِينَ who ءَامَنُوا۟ believe[d] ٱتَّقُوا۟ Fear ٱللَّهَ Allah حَقَّ (as is His) right تُقَاتِهِۦ (that) He (should) be feared وَلَا and (do) not تَمُوتُنَّ die إِلَّا except وَأَنتُم [while you] مُّسْلِمُونَ (as) Muslims ١٠٢

O you who have believed, fear Allāh as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

And hold firmly to the rope of Allāh all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allāh upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.

وَلْتَكُن And let there be مِّنكُمْ among you أُمَّةٌۭ [a] people يَدْعُونَ inviting إِلَى to ٱلْخَيْرِ the good وَيَأْمُرُونَ [and] enjoining بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ the right وَيَنْهَوْنَ and forbidding عَنِ from ٱلْمُنكَرِ ۚ the wrong وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ and those هُمُ they ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ (are) the successful ones ١٠٤

And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong, and those will be the successful.

وَلَا And (do) not تَكُونُوا۟ be كَٱلَّذِينَ like those who تَفَرَّقُوا۟ became divided وَٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ and differed مِنۢ from بَعْدِ after مَا what جَآءَهُمُ came to them ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُ ۚ the clear proofs وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ And those لَهُمْ for them عَذَابٌ (is) a punishment عَظِيمٌۭ great ١٠٥

And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment

— Come To Light

On the Day [some] faces will turn white and [some] faces will turn black. As for those whose faces turn black, [to them it will be said], "Did you disbelieve [i.e., reject faith] after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to reject."

— Come To Light

وَأَمَّا But as for ٱلَّذِينَ those whose ٱبْيَضَّتْ turn white وُجُوهُهُمْ [their] faces فَفِى then (they will be) in رَحْمَةِ (the) Mercy ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah هُمْ they فِيهَا in it خَـٰلِدُونَ (will) abide forever ١٠٧

But as for those whose faces turn white, [they will be] within the mercy of Allāh. They will abide therein eternally.

تِلْكَ These ءَايَـٰتُ (are the) Verses ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah نَتْلُوهَا We recite them عَلَيْكَ to you بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ in truth وَمَا And not ٱللَّهُ Allah يُرِيدُ wants ظُلْمًۭا injustice لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ to the worlds ١٠٨

These are the verses of Allāh. We recite them to you, [O Muḥammad], in truth; and Allāh wants no injustice to the worlds [i.e., His creatures].

To Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And to Allāh will [all] matters be returned.

كُنتُمْ You are خَيْرَ (the) best أُمَّةٍ (of) people أُخْرِجَتْ raised لِلنَّاسِ for the mankind تَأْمُرُونَ enjoining بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ the right وَتَنْهَوْنَ and forbidding عَنِ [from] ٱلْمُنكَرِ the wrong وَتُؤْمِنُونَ and believing بِٱللَّهِ ۗ in Allah وَلَوْ And if ءَامَنَ believed أَهْلُ (the) People ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ (of) the Book لَكَانَ surely would have been خَيْرًۭا good لَّهُم ۚ for them مِّنْهُمُ Among them ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ (are) [the] believers وَأَكْثَرُهُمُ but most of them ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ (are) defiantly disobedient ١١٠

You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allāh. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.

They will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. And if they fight you, they will show you their backs [i.e., retreat]; then they will not be aided.

ضُرِبَتْ Struck عَلَيْهِمُ on them ٱلذِّلَّةُ the humiliation أَيْنَ wherever مَا that ثُقِفُوٓا۟ they are found إِلَّا except بِحَبْلٍۢ with a rope مِّنَ from ٱللَّهِ Allah وَحَبْلٍۢ and a rope مِّنَ from ٱلنَّاسِ the people وَبَآءُو And they incurred بِغَضَبٍۢ wrath مِّنَ from ٱللَّهِ Allah وَضُرِبَتْ and struck عَلَيْهِمُ on them ٱلْمَسْكَنَةُ ۚ the poverty ذَٰلِكَ That بِأَنَّهُمْ (is) because كَانُوا۟ they used to يَكْفُرُونَ disbelieve بِـَٔايَـٰتِ in (the) Verses ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah وَيَقْتُلُونَ and they killed ٱلْأَنۢبِيَآءَ the Prophets بِغَيْرِ without حَقٍّۢ ۚ right ذَٰلِكَ That بِمَا (is) because عَصَوا۟ they disobeyed وَّكَانُوا۟ and they used to يَعْتَدُونَ transgress ١١٢

They have been put under humiliation [by Allāh] wherever they are overtaken, except for a rope [i.e., covenant] from Allāh and a rope [i.e., treaty] from the people [i.e., the Muslims]. And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allāh and have been put under destitution. That is because they disbelieved in [i.e., rejected] the verses of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.
