9. Surah At-Tawbah

The Repentance · Madani · 129 Ayahs

9:1

بَرَآءَةٌۭ Freedom from obligations مِّنَ from ٱللَّهِ Allah وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ and His Messenger إِلَى to ٱلَّذِينَ those (with) whom عَـٰهَدتُّم you made a covenant مِّنَ from ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ the polytheists ١

[This is a declaration of] disassociation, from Allāh and His Messenger, to those with whom you had made a treaty among the polytheists.

— Come To Light

9:2

فَسِيحُوا۟ So move about فِى in ٱلْأَرْضِ the land أَرْبَعَةَ (during) four أَشْهُرٍۢ months وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ but know أَنَّكُمْ that you غَيْرُ (can) not مُعْجِزِى escape ٱللَّهِ ۙ Allah وَأَنَّ and that ٱللَّهَ Allah مُخْزِى (is) the One Who (will) disgrace ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ the disbelievers ٢

So travel freely, [O disbelievers], throughout the land [during] four months but know that you cannot cause failure to Allāh and that Allāh will disgrace the disbelievers.

— Come To Light

9:3

وَأَذَٰنٌۭ And an announcement مِّنَ from Allah ٱللَّهِ from Allah وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ and His Messenger إِلَى to ٱلنَّاسِ the people يَوْمَ (on the) day ٱلْحَجِّ (of) the greater Pilgrimage ٱلْأَكْبَرِ (of) the greater Pilgrimage أَنَّ that ٱللَّهَ Allah بَرِىٓءٌۭ (is) free from obligations مِّنَ [of] ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ ۙ (to) the polytheists وَرَسُولُهُۥ ۚ and (so is) His Messenger فَإِن So if تُبْتُمْ you repent فَهُوَ then, it is خَيْرٌۭ best لَّكُمْ ۖ for you وَإِن But if تَوَلَّيْتُمْ you turn away فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ then know أَنَّكُمْ that you غَيْرُ (can) not مُعْجِزِى escape ٱللَّهِ ۗ Allah وَبَشِّرِ And give glad tidings ٱلَّذِينَ (to) those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve بِعَذَابٍ of a punishment أَلِيمٍ painful ٣

And [it is] an announcement from Allāh and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allāh is disassociated from the disbelievers, and [so is] His Messenger. So if you repent, that is best for you; but if you turn away - then know that you will not cause failure to Allāh. And give tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment.

— Come To Light

9:4

إِلَّا Except ٱلَّذِينَ those (with) whom عَـٰهَدتُّم you have a covenant مِّنَ among ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ the polytheists ثُمَّ then لَمْ not يَنقُصُوكُمْ they have failed you شَيْـًۭٔا (in any) thing وَلَمْ and not يُظَـٰهِرُوا۟ they have supported عَلَيْكُمْ against you أَحَدًۭا anyone فَأَتِمُّوٓا۟ so fulfil إِلَيْهِمْ to them عَهْدَهُمْ their treaty إِلَىٰ till مُدَّتِهِمْ ۚ their term إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah يُحِبُّ loves ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ the righteous ٤

Excepted are those with whom you made a treaty among the polytheists and then they have not been deficient toward you in anything or supported anyone against you; so complete for them their treaty until their term [has ended]. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous [who fear Him].

— Come To Light

9:5

فَإِذَا Then when ٱنسَلَخَ have passed ٱلْأَشْهُرُ the sacred months ٱلْحُرُمُ the sacred months فَٱقْتُلُوا۟ then kill ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ the polytheists حَيْثُ wherever وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ you find them وَخُذُوهُمْ and seize them وَٱحْصُرُوهُمْ and besiege them وَٱقْعُدُوا۟ and sit (in wait) لَهُمْ for them كُلَّ (at) every مَرْصَدٍۢ ۚ place of ambush فَإِن But if تَابُوا۟ they repent وَأَقَامُوا۟ and establish ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ the prayer وَءَاتَوُا۟ and give ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ the zakah فَخَلُّوا۟ then leave سَبِيلَهُمْ ۚ their way إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah غَفُورٌۭ (is) Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٌۭ Most Merciful ٥

And when the inviolable months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakāh, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Come To Light

9:6

وَإِنْ And if أَحَدٌۭ anyone مِّنَ of ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ the polytheists ٱسْتَجَارَكَ seek your protection فَأَجِرْهُ then grant him protection حَتَّىٰ until يَسْمَعَ he hears كَلَـٰمَ (the) Words of Allah ٱللَّهِ (the) Words of Allah ثُمَّ Then أَبْلِغْهُ escort him مَأْمَنَهُۥ ۚ (to) his place of safety ذَٰلِكَ That بِأَنَّهُمْ (is) because they قَوْمٌۭ (are) a people لَّا (who) do not know يَعْلَمُونَ (who) do not know ٦

And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allāh [i.e., the Qur’ān]. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.

— Come To Light

9:7

كَيْفَ How يَكُونُ can (there) be لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ for the polytheists عَهْدٌ a covenant عِندَ with ٱللَّهِ Allah وَعِندَ and with رَسُولِهِۦٓ His Messenger إِلَّا except ٱلَّذِينَ those (with) whom عَـٰهَدتُّمْ you made a covenant عِندَ near ٱلْمَسْجِدِ Al-Masjid ٱلْحَرَامِ ۖ Al-Haraam فَمَا So long as ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ they are upright لَكُمْ to you فَٱسْتَقِيمُوا۟ then you be upright لَهُمْ ۚ to them إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah يُحِبُّ loves ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ the righteous ٧

How can there be for the polytheists a treaty in the sight of Allāh and with His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at al-Masjid al-Ḥarām? So as long as they are upright toward you, be upright toward them. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous [who fear Him].

— Come To Light

9:8

كَيْفَ How وَإِن while, if يَظْهَرُوا۟ they gain dominance عَلَيْكُمْ over you لَا they do not regard (the ties) يَرْقُبُوا۟ they do not regard (the ties) فِيكُمْ with you إِلًّۭا (of) kinship وَلَا and not ذِمَّةًۭ ۚ covenant of protection يُرْضُونَكُم They satisfy you بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ with their mouths وَتَأْبَىٰ but refuse قُلُوبُهُمْ their hearts وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ and most of them فَـٰسِقُونَ (are) defiantly disobedient ٨

How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.

— Come To Light

9:9

ٱشْتَرَوْا۟ They exchange بِـَٔايَـٰتِ [with] the Verses of Allah ٱللَّهِ [with] the Verses of Allah ثَمَنًۭا (for) a little price قَلِيلًۭا (for) a little price فَصَدُّوا۟ and they hinder (people) عَن from سَبِيلِهِۦٓ ۚ His way إِنَّهُمْ Indeed سَآءَ evil مَا (is) what كَانُوا۟ they used to يَعْمَلُونَ do ٩

They have exchanged the signs of Allāh for a small price and averted [people] from His way. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

— Come To Light

لَا Not يَرْقُبُونَ they respect (the ties) فِى towards مُؤْمِنٍ a believer إِلًّۭا (of) kinship وَلَا and not ذِمَّةًۭ ۚ covenant of protection وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ And those هُمُ [they] ٱلْمُعْتَدُونَ (are) the transgressors ١٠

They do not observe toward a believer any pact of kinship or covenant of protection. And it is they who are the transgressors.

— Come To Light

فَإِن But if تَابُوا۟ they repent وَأَقَامُوا۟ and establish ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ the prayer وَءَاتَوُا۟ and give ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ the zakah فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ then (they are) your brothers فِى in ٱلدِّينِ ۗ [the] religion وَنُفَصِّلُ And We explain in detail ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ the Verses لِقَوْمٍۢ for a people يَعْلَمُونَ (who) know ١١

But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakāh, then they are your brothers in religion; and We detail the verses for a people who know.

— Come To Light

وَإِن And if نَّكَثُوٓا۟ they break أَيْمَـٰنَهُم their oaths مِّنۢ after بَعْدِ after عَهْدِهِمْ their treaty وَطَعَنُوا۟ and defame فِى [in] دِينِكُمْ your religion فَقَـٰتِلُوٓا۟ then fight أَئِمَّةَ the leaders ٱلْكُفْرِ ۙ (of) [the] disbelief إِنَّهُمْ indeed, they لَآ no أَيْمَـٰنَ oaths لَهُمْ for them لَعَلَّهُمْ so that they may يَنتَهُونَ cease ١٢

And if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame your religion, then combat the leaders of disbelief, for indeed, there are no oaths [sacred] to them; [fight them that] they might cease.

— Come To Light

أَلَا Will not تُقَـٰتِلُونَ you fight قَوْمًۭا a people نَّكَثُوٓا۟ who broke أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ their oaths وَهَمُّوا۟ and determined بِإِخْرَاجِ to drive out ٱلرَّسُولِ the Messenger وَهُم and they بَدَءُوكُمْ began (to attack) you أَوَّلَ first مَرَّةٍ ۚ time أَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْ ۚ Do you fear them فَٱللَّهُ But Allah أَحَقُّ (has) more right أَن that تَخْشَوْهُ you should fear Him إِن if كُنتُم you are مُّؤْمِنِينَ believers ١٣

Would you not fight against a people who broke their oaths and determined to expel the Messenger, and they had begun [the attack upon] you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allāh has more right that you should fear Him, if you are [truly] believers.

— Come To Light

قَـٰتِلُوهُمْ Fight them يُعَذِّبْهُمُ Allah will punish them ٱللَّهُ Allah will punish them بِأَيْدِيكُمْ by your hands وَيُخْزِهِمْ and disgrace them وَيَنصُرْكُمْ and give you victory عَلَيْهِمْ over them وَيَشْفِ and will heal صُدُورَ (the) breasts قَوْمٍۢ (of) a people مُّؤْمِنِينَ (who are) believers ١٤

Fight them; Allāh will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory over them and satisfy the breasts [i.e., desires] of a believing people

— Come To Light

وَيُذْهِبْ And remove غَيْظَ (the) anger قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ (of) their hearts وَيَتُوبُ And Allah accepts repentance ٱللَّهُ And Allah accepts repentance عَلَىٰ of مَن whom يَشَآءُ ۗ He wills وَٱللَّهُ And Allah عَلِيمٌ (is) All-Knower حَكِيمٌ All-Wise ١٥

And remove the fury in their [i.e., the believers'] hearts. And Allāh turns in forgiveness to whom He wills; and Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

— Come To Light

أَمْ Or حَسِبْتُمْ (do) you think أَن that تُتْرَكُوا۟ you would be left وَلَمَّا while not يَعْلَمِ Allah made evident ٱللَّهُ Allah made evident ٱلَّذِينَ those who جَـٰهَدُوا۟ strive مِنكُمْ among you وَلَمْ and not يَتَّخِذُوا۟ take مِن besides Allah دُونِ besides Allah ٱللَّهِ besides Allah وَلَا and not رَسُولِهِۦ His Messenger وَلَا and not ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ the believers وَلِيجَةًۭ ۚ (as) intimates وَٱللَّهُ And Allah خَبِيرٌۢ (is) All-Aware بِمَا of what تَعْمَلُونَ you do ١٦

Do you think that you will be left [as you are] while Allāh has not yet made evident those among you who strive [for His cause] and do not take other than Allāh, His Messenger and the believers as intimates? And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.

— Come To Light

مَا (It) is not كَانَ (It) is not لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ for the polytheists أَن that يَعْمُرُوا۟ they maintain مَسَـٰجِدَ (the) masajid of Allah ٱللَّهِ (the) masajid of Allah شَـٰهِدِينَ (while) witnessing عَلَىٰٓ against أَنفُسِهِم themselves بِٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ [with] disbelief أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ (For) those حَبِطَتْ worthless أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ (are) their deeds وَفِى and in ٱلنَّارِ the Fire هُمْ they خَـٰلِدُونَ (will) abide forever ١٧

It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allāh [while] witnessing against themselves with disbelief. [For] those, their deeds have become worthless, and in the Fire they will abide eternally.

— Come To Light

إِنَّمَا Only يَعْمُرُ will maintain مَسَـٰجِدَ (the) masajid of Allah ٱللَّهِ (the) masajid of Allah مَنْ (the one) who ءَامَنَ believes بِٱللَّهِ in Allah وَٱلْيَوْمِ and the Day ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ the Last وَأَقَامَ and establishes ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ the prayer وَءَاتَى and gives ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ the zakah وَلَمْ and not يَخْشَ fear إِلَّا except ٱللَّهَ ۖ Allah فَعَسَىٰٓ Then perhaps أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ those أَن [that] يَكُونُوا۟ they are مِنَ of ٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ the guided ones ١٨

The mosques of Allāh are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakāh and do not fear except Allāh, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided.

— Come To Light

۞ أَجَعَلْتُمْ Do you make سِقَايَةَ the providing of water ٱلْحَآجِّ (to) the pilgrims وَعِمَارَةَ and (the) maintenance ٱلْمَسْجِدِ (of) Al-Masjid Al-Haraam ٱلْحَرَامِ (of) Al-Masjid Al-Haraam كَمَنْ like (the one) who ءَامَنَ believes بِٱللَّهِ in Allah وَٱلْيَوْمِ and the Day ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ the Last وَجَـٰهَدَ and strives فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ ۚ (of) Allah لَا They are not equal يَسْتَوُۥنَ They are not equal عِندَ near ٱللَّهِ ۗ Allah وَٱللَّهُ And Allah لَا (does) not يَهْدِى guide ٱلْقَوْمَ the people ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ the wrongdoers ١٩

Have you made the providing of water for the pilgrim and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām equal to [the deeds of] one who believes in Allāh and the Last Day and strives in the cause of Allāh? They are not equal in the sight of Allāh. And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

— Come To Light

ٱلَّذِينَ Those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believed وَهَاجَرُوا۟ and emigrated وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ and strove فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ with their wealth وَأَنفُسِهِمْ and their lives أَعْظَمُ (are) greater دَرَجَةً (in) rank عِندَ near ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ And those هُمُ they ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ (are) the successful ٢٠

The ones who have believed, emigrated and striven in the cause of Allāh with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allāh. And it is those who are the attainers [of success].

— Come To Light

يُبَشِّرُهُمْ Their Lord gives them glad tidings رَبُّهُم Their Lord gives them glad tidings بِرَحْمَةٍۢ of Mercy مِّنْهُ from Him وَرِضْوَٰنٍۢ and Pleasure وَجَنَّـٰتٍۢ and Gardens لَّهُمْ for them فِيهَا in it نَعِيمٌۭ (is) bliss مُّقِيمٌ enduring ٢١

Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and approval and of gardens for them wherein is enduring pleasure.

— Come To Light

خَـٰلِدِينَ (They will) abide فِيهَآ in it أَبَدًا ۚ forever إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah عِندَهُۥٓ with Him أَجْرٌ (is) a reward عَظِيمٌۭ great ٢٢

[They will be] abiding therein forever. Indeed, Allāh has with Him a great reward.

— Come To Light

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you ٱلَّذِينَ who ءَامَنُوا۟ believe لَا (Do) not تَتَّخِذُوٓا۟ take ءَابَآءَكُمْ your fathers وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمْ and your brothers أَوْلِيَآءَ (as) allies إِنِ if ٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ they prefer ٱلْكُفْرَ [the] disbelief عَلَى over ٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ [the] belief وَمَن And whoever يَتَوَلَّهُم takes them as allies مِّنكُمْ among you فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ then those هُمُ [they] ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ (are) the wrongdoers ٢٣

O you who have believed, do not take your fathers or your brothers as allies if they have preferred disbelief over belief. And whoever does so among you - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

— Come To Light

قُلْ Say إِن If كَانَ are ءَابَآؤُكُمْ your fathers وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ and your sons وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ and your brothers وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ and your spouses وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ and your relatives وَأَمْوَٰلٌ and wealth ٱقْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا that you have acquired وَتِجَـٰرَةٌۭ and the commerce تَخْشَوْنَ you fear كَسَادَهَا a decline (in) it وَمَسَـٰكِنُ and the dwellings تَرْضَوْنَهَآ you delight (in) it أَحَبَّ (are) more beloved إِلَيْكُم to you مِّنَ than ٱللَّهِ Allah وَرَسُولِهِۦ and His Messenger وَجِهَادٍۢ and striving فِى in سَبِيلِهِۦ His way فَتَرَبَّصُوا۟ then wait حَتَّىٰ until يَأْتِىَ Allah brings ٱللَّهُ Allah brings بِأَمْرِهِۦ ۗ His Command وَٱللَّهُ And Allah لَا (does) not يَهْدِى guide ٱلْقَوْمَ the people ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ the defiantly disobedient ٢٤

Say, [O Muḥammad], "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, wealth which you have obtained, commerce wherein you fear decline, and dwellings with which you are pleased are more beloved to you than Allāh and His Messenger and jihād [i.e., striving] in His cause, then wait until Allāh executes His command. And Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people."

— Come To Light

لَقَدْ Verily نَصَرَكُمُ Allah helped you ٱللَّهُ Allah helped you فِى in مَوَاطِنَ regions كَثِيرَةٍۢ ۙ many وَيَوْمَ and (on the) day حُنَيْنٍ ۙ (of) Hunain إِذْ when أَعْجَبَتْكُمْ pleased you كَثْرَتُكُمْ your multitude فَلَمْ but not تُغْنِ availed عَنكُمْ you شَيْـًۭٔا anything وَضَاقَتْ and (was) straitened عَلَيْكُمُ for you ٱلْأَرْضُ the earth بِمَا (in spite) of its vastness رَحُبَتْ (in spite) of its vastness ثُمَّ then وَلَّيْتُم you turned back مُّدْبِرِينَ fleeing ٢٥

Allāh has already given you victory in many regions and [even] on the day of Ḥunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail you at all, and the earth was confining for you with [i.e., in spite of] its vastness; then you turned back, fleeing.

— Come To Light

ثُمَّ Then أَنزَلَ Allah sent down ٱللَّهُ Allah sent down سَكِينَتَهُۥ His tranquility عَلَىٰ on رَسُولِهِۦ His Messenger وَعَلَى and on ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ the believers وَأَنزَلَ and sent down جُنُودًۭا forces لَّمْ which you did not see تَرَوْهَا which you did not see وَعَذَّبَ and He punished ٱلَّذِينَ those who كَفَرُوا۟ ۚ disbelieved وَذَٰلِكَ And that جَزَآءُ (is) the recompense ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ (of) the disbelievers ٢٦

Then Allāh sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and sent down soldiers [i.e., angels] whom you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the disbelievers.

— Come To Light

ثُمَّ Then يَتُوبُ Allah accepts repentance ٱللَّهُ Allah accepts repentance مِنۢ after بَعْدِ after ذَٰلِكَ that عَلَىٰ for مَن whom يَشَآءُ ۗ He wills وَٱللَّهُ And Allah غَفُورٌۭ (is) Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٌۭ Most Merciful ٢٧

Then Allāh will accept repentance after that for whom He wills; and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Come To Light

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe ٱلَّذِينَ O you who believe ءَامَنُوٓا۟ O you who believe إِنَّمَا Indeed ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ the polytheists نَجَسٌۭ (are) unclean فَلَا so let them not come near يَقْرَبُوا۟ so let them not come near ٱلْمَسْجِدَ Al-Masjid Al-Haraam ٱلْحَرَامَ Al-Masjid Al-Haraam بَعْدَ after عَامِهِمْ this, their (final) year هَـٰذَا ۚ this, their (final) year وَإِنْ And if خِفْتُمْ you fear عَيْلَةًۭ poverty فَسَوْفَ then soon يُغْنِيكُمُ Allah will enrich you ٱللَّهُ Allah will enrich you مِن from فَضْلِهِۦٓ His Bounty إِن if شَآءَ ۚ He wills إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah عَلِيمٌ (is) All-Knower حَكِيمٌۭ All-Wise ٢٨

O you who have believed, indeed the polytheists are unclean, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-Ḥarām after this, their [final] year. And if you fear privation, Allāh will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

— Come To Light

قَـٰتِلُوا۟ Fight ٱلَّذِينَ those who لَا (do) not يُؤْمِنُونَ believe بِٱللَّهِ in Allah وَلَا and not بِٱلْيَوْمِ in the Day ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ the Last وَلَا and not يُحَرِّمُونَ they make unlawful مَا what حَرَّمَ Allah has made unlawful ٱللَّهُ Allah has made unlawful وَرَسُولُهُۥ and His Messenger وَلَا and not يَدِينُونَ they acknowledge دِينَ (the) religion ٱلْحَقِّ (of) the truth مِنَ from ٱلَّذِينَ those who أُوتُوا۟ were given ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Scripture حَتَّىٰ until يُعْطُوا۟ they pay ٱلْجِزْيَةَ the jizyah عَن willingly يَدٍۢ willingly وَهُمْ while they صَـٰغِرُونَ (are) subdued ٢٩

Fight against those who do not believe in Allāh or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allāh and His Messenger have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth [i.e., Islām] from those who were given the Scripture - [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.

— Come To Light

وَقَالَتِ And said ٱلْيَهُودُ the Jews عُزَيْرٌ Uzair ٱبْنُ (is) son ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah وَقَالَتِ And said ٱلنَّصَـٰرَى the Christians ٱلْمَسِيحُ Messiah ٱبْنُ (is) son ٱللَّهِ ۖ (of) Allah ذَٰلِكَ That قَوْلُهُم (is) their saying بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ ۖ with their mouths يُضَـٰهِـُٔونَ they imitate قَوْلَ the saying ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieved مِن before قَبْلُ ۚ before قَـٰتَلَهُمُ (May) Allah destroy them ٱللَّهُ ۚ (May) Allah destroy them أَنَّىٰ How يُؤْفَكُونَ deluded are they ٣٠

The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allāh"; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allāh." That is their statement from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before [them]. May Allāh destroy them; how are they deluded?

— Come To Light

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ They have taken أَحْبَارَهُمْ their rabbis وَرُهْبَـٰنَهُمْ and their monks أَرْبَابًۭا (as) Lords مِّن besides دُونِ besides ٱللَّهِ Allah وَٱلْمَسِيحَ and the Messiah ٱبْنَ son مَرْيَمَ (of) Maryam وَمَآ And not أُمِرُوٓا۟ they were commanded إِلَّا except لِيَعْبُدُوٓا۟ that they worship إِلَـٰهًۭا One God وَٰحِدًۭا ۖ One God لَّآ (There) is no إِلَـٰهَ god إِلَّا except هُوَ ۚ Him سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ Glory be to Him عَمَّا from what يُشْرِكُونَ they associate (with Him) ٣١

They have taken their scholars and monks as lords besides Allāh, and [also] the Messiah, the son of Mary. And they were not commanded except to worship one God; there is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever they associate with Him.

يُرِيدُونَ They want أَن to يُطْفِـُٔوا۟ extinguish نُورَ Allah's light ٱللَّهِ Allah's light بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ with their mouths وَيَأْبَى but Allah refuses ٱللَّهُ but Allah refuses إِلَّآ except أَن to يُتِمَّ perfect نُورَهُۥ His Light وَلَوْ even if كَرِهَ the disbelievers dislike (it) ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ the disbelievers dislike (it) ٣٢

They want to extinguish the light of Allāh with their mouths, but Allāh refuses except to perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.

هُوَ He ٱلَّذِىٓ (is) the One Who أَرْسَلَ has sent رَسُولَهُۥ His Messenger بِٱلْهُدَىٰ with the guidance وَدِينِ and the religion ٱلْحَقِّ (of) [the] truth لِيُظْهِرَهُۥ to manifest it عَلَى over ٱلدِّينِ all religions كُلِّهِۦ all religions وَلَوْ Even if كَرِهَ dislike (it) ٱلْمُشْرِكُونَ the polytheists ٣٣

It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allāh dislike it.

۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe ٱلَّذِينَ O you who believe ءَامَنُوٓا۟ O you who believe إِنَّ Indeed كَثِيرًۭا many مِّنَ of ٱلْأَحْبَارِ the rabbis وَٱلرُّهْبَانِ and the monks لَيَأْكُلُونَ surely eat أَمْوَٰلَ (the) wealth ٱلنَّاسِ (of) the people بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ in falsehood وَيَصُدُّونَ and hinder عَن from سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ ۗ (of) Allah وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who يَكْنِزُونَ hoard ٱلذَّهَبَ the gold وَٱلْفِضَّةَ and the silver وَلَا and (do) not يُنفِقُونَهَا spend it فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah فَبَشِّرْهُم [so] give them tidings بِعَذَابٍ of a punishment أَلِيمٍۢ painful ٣٤

O you who have believed, indeed many of the scholars and the monks devour the wealth of people unjustly and avert [them] from the way of Allāh. And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allāh - give them tidings of a painful punishment.

يَوْمَ (The) Day يُحْمَىٰ it will be heated [on it] عَلَيْهَا it will be heated [on it] فِى in نَارِ the Fire جَهَنَّمَ (of) Hell فَتُكْوَىٰ and will be branded بِهَا with it جِبَاهُهُمْ their foreheads وَجُنُوبُهُمْ and their flanks وَظُهُورُهُمْ ۖ and their backs هَـٰذَا This مَا (is) what كَنَزْتُمْ you hoarded لِأَنفُسِكُمْ for yourselves فَذُوقُوا۟ so taste مَا what كُنتُمْ you used to تَكْنِزُونَ hoard ٣٥

The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."

إِنَّ Indeed عِدَّةَ (the) number ٱلشُّهُورِ (of) the months عِندَ with ٱللَّهِ Allah ٱثْنَا (is) twelve عَشَرَ (is) twelve شَهْرًۭا months فِى in كِتَـٰبِ (the) ordinance ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah يَوْمَ (from the) Day خَلَقَ He created ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَ and the earth مِنْهَآ of them أَرْبَعَةٌ four حُرُمٌۭ ۚ (are) sacred ذَٰلِكَ That ٱلدِّينُ (is) the religion ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚ the upright فَلَا so (do) not تَظْلِمُوا۟ wrong فِيهِنَّ therein أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ yourselves وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ And fight ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ the polytheists كَآفَّةًۭ all together كَمَا as يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ they fight you كَآفَّةًۭ ۚ all together وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ And know أَنَّ that ٱللَّهَ Allah مَعَ (is) with ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ the righteous ٣٦

Indeed, the number of months with Allāh is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allāh [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allāh is with the righteous [who fear Him].

إِنَّمَا Indeed ٱلنَّسِىٓءُ the postponing زِيَادَةٌۭ (is) an increase فِى in ٱلْكُفْرِ ۖ the disbelief يُضَلُّ are led astray بِهِ by it ٱلَّذِينَ those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve يُحِلُّونَهُۥ They make it lawful عَامًۭا one year وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ and make it unlawful عَامًۭا (another) year لِّيُوَاطِـُٔوا۟ to adjust عِدَّةَ the number مَا which حَرَّمَ Allah has made unlawful ٱللَّهُ Allah has made unlawful فَيُحِلُّوا۟ and making lawful مَا what حَرَّمَ Allah has made unlawful ٱللَّهُ ۚ Allah has made unlawful زُيِّنَ Is made fair-seeming لَهُمْ to them سُوٓءُ (the) evil أَعْمَـٰلِهِمْ ۗ (of) their deeds وَٱللَّهُ And Allah لَا (does) not يَهْدِى guide ٱلْقَوْمَ the people ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ the disbelievers ٣٧

Indeed, the postponing [of restriction within sacred months] is an increase in disbelief by which those who have disbelieved are led [further] astray. They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year to correspond to the number made unlawful by Allāh and [thus] make lawful what Allāh has made unlawful. Made pleasing to them is the evil of their deeds; and Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe ٱلَّذِينَ O you who believe ءَامَنُوا۟ O you who believe مَا What لَكُمْ (is the matter) with you إِذَا when قِيلَ it is said لَكُمُ to you ٱنفِرُوا۟ go forth فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah ٱثَّاقَلْتُمْ you cling heavily إِلَى to ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ the earth أَرَضِيتُم Are you pleased بِٱلْحَيَوٰةِ with the life ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world مِنَ (rather) than ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ the Hereafter فَمَا But what مَتَـٰعُ (is the) enjoyment ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ (of) the life ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world فِى in (comparison to) ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ the hereafter إِلَّا except قَلِيلٌ a little ٣٨

O you who have believed, what is [the matter] with you that, when you are told to go forth in the cause of Allāh, you adhere heavily to the earth? Are you satisfied with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But what is the enjoyment of worldly life compared to the Hereafter except a [very] little.

If you do not go forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment and will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all. And Allāh is over all things competent.

— Come To Light

إِلَّا If not تَنصُرُوهُ you help him فَقَدْ certainly نَصَرَهُ Allah helped him ٱللَّهُ Allah helped him إِذْ when أَخْرَجَهُ drove him out ٱلَّذِينَ those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieved ثَانِىَ the second ٱثْنَيْنِ (of) the two إِذْ when هُمَا they both فِى (were) in ٱلْغَارِ the cave إِذْ when يَقُولُ he said لِصَـٰحِبِهِۦ to his companion لَا (Do) not تَحْزَنْ grieve إِنَّ indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah مَعَنَا ۖ (is) with us فَأَنزَلَ Then Allah sent down ٱللَّهُ Then Allah sent down سَكِينَتَهُۥ His tranquility عَلَيْهِ upon him وَأَيَّدَهُۥ and supported him بِجُنُودٍۢ with forces لَّمْ which you did not see تَرَوْهَا which you did not see وَجَعَلَ and made كَلِمَةَ (the) word ٱلَّذِينَ (of) those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieved ٱلسُّفْلَىٰ ۗ the lowest وَكَلِمَةُ while (the) Word ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah هِىَ it (is) ٱلْعُلْيَا ۗ the highest وَٱللَّهُ And Allah عَزِيزٌ (is) All-Mighty حَكِيمٌ All-Wise ٤٠

If you do not aid him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] - Allāh has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allāh is with us." And Allāh sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with soldiers [i.e., angels] you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allāh - that is the highest. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Go forth, whether light or heavy, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of Allāh. That is better for you, if you only knew.

لَوْ If كَانَ it had been عَرَضًۭا a gain قَرِيبًۭا near وَسَفَرًۭا and a journey قَاصِدًۭا easy لَّٱتَّبَعُوكَ surely they (would) have followed you وَلَـٰكِنۢ but بَعُدَتْ was long عَلَيْهِمُ for them ٱلشُّقَّةُ ۚ the distance وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ And they will swear بِٱللَّهِ by Allah لَوِ If ٱسْتَطَعْنَا we were able لَخَرَجْنَا certainly we (would) have come forth مَعَكُمْ with you يُهْلِكُونَ They destroy أَنفُسَهُمْ their own selves وَٱللَّهُ and Allah يَعْلَمُ knows إِنَّهُمْ (that) indeed, they لَكَـٰذِبُونَ (are) surely liars ٤٢

Had it been a near [i.e., easy] gain and a moderate trip, they [i.e., the hypocrites] would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allāh, "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allāh knows that indeed they are liars.

Those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day would not ask permission of you to be excused from striving [i.e., fighting] with their wealth and their lives. And Allāh is Knowing of those who fear Him.

Only those would ask permission of you who do not believe in Allāh and the Last Day and whose hearts have doubted, and they, in their doubt, are hesitating.

And if they had intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it [some] preparation. But Allāh disliked their being sent, so He kept them back, and they were told, "Remain [behind] with those who remain."

— Come To Light

لَوْ If خَرَجُوا۟ they (had) gone forth فِيكُم with you مَّا not زَادُوكُمْ they (would) have increased you إِلَّا except خَبَالًۭا (in) confusion وَلَأَوْضَعُوا۟ and would have been active خِلَـٰلَكُمْ in your midst يَبْغُونَكُمُ seeking (for) you ٱلْفِتْنَةَ dissension وَفِيكُمْ And among you (are some) سَمَّـٰعُونَ who would have listened لَهُمْ ۗ to them وَٱللَّهُ And Allah عَلِيمٌۢ (is) All-Knower بِٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ of the wrongdoers ٤٧

Had they gone forth with you, they would not have increased you except in confusion, and they would have been active among you, seeking [to cause] you fitnah [i.e., chaos and dissension]. And among you are avid listeners to them. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.

And among them is he who says, "Permit me [to remain at home] and do not put me to trial." Unquestionably, into trial they have fallen. And indeed, Hell will encompass the disbelievers.

And what prevents their expenditures from being accepted from them but that they have disbelieved in Allāh and in His Messenger and that they come not to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are unwilling.

— Come To Light

So let not their wealth or their children impress you. Allāh only intends to punish them through them in worldly life and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are disbelievers.

If only they had been satisfied with what Allāh and His Messenger gave them and said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh; Allāh will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, we are desirous toward Allāh," [it would have been better for them].

— Come To Light

Zakāh expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed for it and for bringing hearts together [for Islām] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allāh and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allāh. And among them are those who abuse the Prophet and say, "He is an ear." Say, "[It is] an ear of goodness for you that believes in Allāh and believes the believers and [is] a mercy to those who believe among you." And those who abuse the Messenger of Allāh - for them is a painful punishment.

And they were not resentful except [for the fact] that Allāh and His Messenger had enriched them of His bounty. سَيَحْلِفُونَ They will swear بِٱللَّهِ by Allah لَكُمْ to you إِذَا when ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ you returned إِلَيْهِمْ to them لِتُعْرِضُوا۟ that you may turn away عَنْهُمْ ۖ from them فَأَعْرِضُوا۟ So turn away عَنْهُمْ ۖ from them إِنَّهُمْ indeed, they رِجْسٌۭ ۖ (are) impure وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ and their abode جَهَنَّمُ (is) Hell جَزَآءًۢ a recompense بِمَا for what كَانُوا۟ they used (to) يَكْسِبُونَ earn ٩٥

They will swear by Allāh to you when you return to them that you would leave them alone. So leave them alone; indeed they are evil; and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they had been earning.

يَحْلِفُونَ They swear لَكُمْ to you لِتَرْضَوْا۟ that you may be pleased عَنْهُمْ ۖ with them فَإِن But if تَرْضَوْا۟ you are pleased عَنْهُمْ with them فَإِنَّ then indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah لَا (is) not pleased يَرْضَىٰ (is) not pleased عَنِ with ٱلْقَوْمِ the people ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ (who are) defiantly disobedient ٩٦

They swear to you so that you might be satisfied with them. But if you should be satisfied with them - indeed, Allāh is not satisfied with a defiantly disobedient people.

ٱلْأَعْرَابُ The bedouins أَشَدُّ (are) stronger كُفْرًۭا (in) disbelief وَنِفَاقًۭا and hypocrisy وَأَجْدَرُ and more likely أَلَّا that not يَعْلَمُوا۟ they know حُدُودَ (the) limits مَآ (of) what أَنزَلَ Allah (has) revealed ٱللَّهُ Allah (has) revealed عَلَىٰ to رَسُولِهِۦ ۗ His Messenger وَٱللَّهُ And Allah عَلِيمٌ (is) All-Knower حَكِيمٌۭ All-Wise ٩٧

The bedouins are stronger in disbelief and hypocrisy and more likely not to know the limits of what [laws] Allāh has revealed to His Messenger. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.

وَمِنَ And among ٱلْأَعْرَابِ the bedouins مَن (is he) who يَتَّخِذُ takes مَا what يُنفِقُ he spends مَغْرَمًۭا (as) a loss وَيَتَرَبَّصُ and he awaits بِكُمُ for you ٱلدَّوَآئِرَ ۚ the turns (of misfortune) عَلَيْهِمْ Upon them دَآئِرَةُ (will be) the turn ٱلسَّوْءِ ۗ (of) the evil وَٱللَّهُ And Allah سَمِيعٌ (is) All-Hearer عَلِيمٌۭ All-Knower ٩٨

And among the bedouins are some who consider what they spend as a loss and await for you turns of misfortune. Upon them will be a misfortune of evil. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

وَمِنَ But among ٱلْأَعْرَابِ the bedouins مَن (is he) who يُؤْمِنُ believes بِٱللَّهِ in Allah وَٱلْيَوْمِ and the Day ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ the Last وَيَتَّخِذُ and takes مَا what يُنفِقُ he spends قُرُبَـٰتٍ (as) means of nearness عِندَ with ٱللَّهِ Allah وَصَلَوَٰتِ and blessings ٱلرَّسُولِ ۚ (of) the Messenger أَلَآ Behold إِنَّهَا Indeed, it قُرْبَةٌۭ (is) a means of nearness لَّهُمْ ۚ for them سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ Allah will admit them ٱللَّهُ Allah will admit them فِى to رَحْمَتِهِۦٓ ۗ His Mercy إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah غَفُورٌۭ (is) Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٌۭ Most Merciful ٩٩

But among the bedouins are some who believe in Allāh and the Last Day and consider what they spend as means of nearness to Allāh and of [obtaining] invocations of the Messenger. Unquestionably, it is a means of nearness for them. Allāh will admit them to His mercy. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ And the forerunners ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ the first مِنَ among ٱلْمُهَـٰجِرِينَ the emigrants وَٱلْأَنصَارِ and the helpers وَٱلَّذِينَ and those who ٱتَّبَعُوهُم followed them بِإِحْسَـٰنٍۢ in righteousness رَّضِىَ Allah is pleased ٱللَّهُ Allah is pleased عَنْهُمْ with them وَرَضُوا۟ and they are pleased عَنْهُ with Him وَأَعَدَّ And He has prepared لَهُمْ for them جَنَّـٰتٍۢ Gardens تَجْرِى flows تَحْتَهَا underneath it ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ the rivers خَـٰلِدِينَ will abide فِيهَآ in it أَبَدًۭا ۚ forever ذَٰلِكَ That ٱلْفَوْزُ (is) the success ٱلْعَظِيمُ the great ١٠٠

And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhājireen and the Anṣār and those who followed them with good conduct - Allāh is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.
