إِذَا When وَقَعَتِ occurs ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ the Event ١
When the Occurrence occurs,
— Come To Light
56. Surah Al-Waqi'ah
The Inevitable · Makki · 96 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
لَيْسَ Not لِوَقْعَتِهَا at its occurrence كَاذِبَةٌ a denial ٢
There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
— Come To Light
خَافِضَةٌۭ Bringing down رَّافِعَةٌ raising up ٣
It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].
— Come To Light
إِذَا When رُجَّتِ will be shaken ٱلْأَرْضُ the earth رَجًّۭا (with) a shaking ٤
When the earth is shaken with convulsion
— Come To Light
وَبُسَّتِ And will be crumbled ٱلْجِبَالُ the mountains بَسًّۭا (with awful) crumbling ٥
And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
— Come To Light
فَكَانَتْ So they become هَبَآءًۭ dust particles مُّنۢبَثًّۭا dispersing ٦
And become dust dispersing,
— Come To Light
وَكُنتُمْ And you will become أَزْوَٰجًۭا kinds ثَلَـٰثَةًۭ three ٧
And you become [of] three kinds:
— Come To Light
فَأَصْحَـٰبُ Then (the) companions ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ (of) the right مَآ what أَصْحَـٰبُ (are the) companions ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ (of) the right ٨
Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
— Come To Light
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ And (the) companions ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ (of) the left مَآ what أَصْحَـٰبُ (are the) companions ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ (of) the left ٩
And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?
— Come To Light
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ And the foremost ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ (are) the foremost ١٠
And the forerunners, the forerunners -
— Come To Light
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ (are) the nearest ones ١١
Those are the ones brought near [to Allāh]
— Come To Light
فِى In جَنَّـٰتِ Gardens ٱلنَّعِيمِ (of) Pleasure ١٢
In the Gardens of Pleasure,
— Come To Light
ثُلَّةٌۭ A company مِّنَ of ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ the former (people) ١٣
A [large] company of the former peoples
— Come To Light
وَقَلِيلٌۭ And a few مِّنَ of ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ the later (people) ١٤
And a few of the later peoples,
— Come To Light
عَلَىٰ On سُرُرٍۢ thrones مَّوْضُونَةٍۢ decorated ١٥
On thrones woven [with ornament],
— Come To Light
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ Reclining عَلَيْهَا on them مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ facing each other ١٦
Reclining on them, facing each other.
— Come To Light
يَطُوفُ Will circulate عَلَيْهِمْ among them وِلْدَٰنٌۭ boys مُّخَلَّدُونَ immortal ١٧
There will circulate among them young boys made eternal.
— Come To Light
بِأَكْوَابٍۢ With vessels وَأَبَارِيقَ and jugs وَكَأْسٍۢ and a cup مِّن from مَّعِينٍۢ a flowing stream ١٨
With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -
— Come To Light
لَّا Not يُصَدَّعُونَ they will get headache عَنْهَا therefrom وَلَا and not يُنزِفُونَ they will get intoxicated ١٩
No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -
— Come To Light
وَفَـٰكِهَةٍۢ And fruits مِّمَّا of what يَتَخَيَّرُونَ they select ٢٠
And fruit of what they select
— Come To Light
وَلَحْمِ And (the) flesh طَيْرٍۢ (of) fowls مِّمَّا of what يَشْتَهُونَ they desire ٢١
And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.
— Come To Light
وَحُورٌ And fair ones عِينٌۭ (with) large eyes ٢٢
And [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,
— Come To Light
كَأَمْثَـٰلِ Like ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ pearls ٱلْمَكْنُونِ well-protected ٢٣
The likenesses of pearls well-protected,
— Come To Light
جَزَآءًۢ A reward بِمَا for what كَانُوا۟ they used (to) يَعْمَلُونَ do ٢٤
As reward for what they used to do.
— Come To Light
لَا Not يَسْمَعُونَ they will hear فِيهَا therein لَغْوًۭا vain talk وَلَا and not تَأْثِيمًا sinful (speech) ٢٥
They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -
— Come To Light
إِلَّا Except قِيلًۭا a saying سَلَـٰمًۭا Peace سَلَـٰمًۭا Peace ٢٦
Only a saying [of] peace, peace.
— Come To Light
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ And (the) companions ٱلْيَمِينِ (of) the right مَآ what أَصْحَـٰبُ (are the) companions ٱلْيَمِينِ (of) the right ٢٧
The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
— Come To Light
فِى Among سِدْرٍۢ lote trees مَّخْضُودٍۢ thornless ٢٨
[They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed.
— Come To Light
وَطَلْحٍۢ And banana trees مَّنضُودٍۢ layered ٢٩
And [banana] trees layered [with fruit].
— Come To Light
وَظِلٍّۢ And shade مَّمْدُودٍۢ extended ٣٠
And shade extended.
— Come To Light
وَمَآءٍۢ And water مَّسْكُوبٍۢ poured forth ٣١
And water poured out
— Come To Light
وَفَـٰكِهَةٍۢ And fruit كَثِيرَةٍۢ abundant ٣٢
And fruit, abundant [and varied],
— Come To Light
لَّا Not مَقْطُوعَةٍۢ limited وَلَا and not مَمْنُوعَةٍۢ forbidden ٣٣
Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden,
— Come To Light
وَفُرُشٍۢ And (on) couches مَّرْفُوعَةٍ raised ٣٤
And [upon] beds raised high.
— Come To Light
إِنَّآ Indeed, We أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ [We] have produced them إِنشَآءًۭ (into) a creation ٣٥
Indeed, We have produced them [i.e., the women of Paradise] in a [new] creation
— Come To Light
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ And We have made them أَبْكَارًا virgins ٣٦
And made them virgins,
— Come To Light
عُرُبًا Devoted أَتْرَابًۭا equals in age ٣٧
Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age,
— Come To Light
لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ For (the) companions ٱلْيَمِينِ (of) the right ٣٨
For the companions of the right [who are]
— Come To Light
ثُلَّةٌۭ A company مِّنَ of ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ the former people ٣٩
A company of the former peoples
— Come To Light
وَثُلَّةٌۭ And a company مِّنَ of ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ the later people ٤٠
And a company of the later peoples.
— Come To Light
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ And (the) companions ٱلشِّمَالِ (of) the left مَآ what أَصْحَـٰبُ (are the) companions ٱلشِّمَالِ (of) the left ٤١
And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?
— Come To Light
فِى In سَمُومٍۢ scorching fire وَحَمِيمٍۢ and scalding water ٤٢
[They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water
— Come To Light
وَظِلٍّۢ And a shade مِّن of يَحْمُومٍۢ black smoke ٤٣
And a shade of black smoke,
— Come To Light
لَّا Not بَارِدٍۢ cool وَلَا and not كَرِيمٍ pleasant ٤٤
Neither cool nor beneficial.
— Come To Light
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they كَانُوا۟ were قَبْلَ before ذَٰلِكَ that مُتْرَفِينَ indulging in affluence ٤٥
Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,
— Come To Light
وَكَانُوا۟ And were يُصِرُّونَ persisting عَلَى in ٱلْحِنثِ the sin ٱلْعَظِيمِ the great ٤٦
And they used to persist in the great violation,
— Come To Light
وَكَانُوا۟ And they used (to) يَقُولُونَ say أَئِذَا When مِتْنَا we die وَكُنَّا and become تُرَابًۭا dust وَعِظَـٰمًا and bones أَءِنَّا will we لَمَبْعُوثُونَ surely be resurrected ٤٧
And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
— Come To Light
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا And also our fathers ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ former ٤٨
And our forefathers [as well]?"
— Come To Light
قُلْ Say إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ the former وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ and the later people ٤٩
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, the former and later peoples
— Come To Light
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ Surely, will be gathered إِلَىٰ for مِيقَـٰتِ (the) appointment يَوْمٍۢ (of) a Day مَّعْلُومٍۢ well-known ٥٠
Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then إِنَّكُمْ indeed you أَيُّهَا O those astray ٱلضَّآلُّونَ O those astray ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ the deniers ٥١
Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,
— Come To Light
لَـَٔاكِلُونَ Will surely eat مِن from شَجَرٍۢ (the) tree مِّن of زَقُّومٍۢ Zaqqum ٥٢
Will be eating from trees of zaqqūm
— Come To Light
فَمَالِـُٔونَ Then will fill مِنْهَا with it ٱلْبُطُونَ the bellies ٥٣
And filling with it your bellies
— Come To Light
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ And drink عَلَيْهِ over it مِنَ [from] ٱلْحَمِيمِ the scalding water ٥٤
And drinking on top of it from scalding water.
— Come To Light
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ And will drink شُرْبَ (as) drinking ٱلْهِيمِ (of) the thirsty camels ٥٥
And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.
— Come To Light
هَـٰذَا This نُزُلُهُمْ (is) their hospitality يَوْمَ (on the) Day ٱلدِّينِ (of) Judgment ٥٦
That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.
— Come To Light
نَحْنُ We خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ [We] created you فَلَوْلَا so why (do) not تُصَدِّقُونَ you admit the truth ٥٧
We have created you, so why do you not believe?
— Come To Light
أَفَرَءَيْتُم Do you see مَّا what تُمْنُونَ you emit ٥٨
Have you seen that which you emit?
— Come To Light
ءَأَنتُمْ Is it you تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ who create it أَمْ or نَحْنُ (are) We ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ the Creators ٥٩
Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?
— Come To Light
نَحْنُ We قَدَّرْنَا [We] have decreed بَيْنَكُمُ among you ٱلْمَوْتَ the death وَمَا and not نَحْنُ We بِمَسْبُوقِينَ (are) outrun ٦٠
We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone
— Come To Light
عَلَىٰٓ In أَن that نُّبَدِّلَ We (will) change أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ your likeness[es] وَنُنشِئَكُمْ and produce you فِى in مَا what لَا not تَعْلَمُونَ you know ٦١
In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.
— Come To Light
وَلَقَدْ And certainly عَلِمْتُمُ you know ٱلنَّشْأَةَ the creation ٱلْأُولَىٰ the first فَلَوْلَا so why not تَذَكَّرُونَ you take heed ٦٢
And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?
— Come To Light
أَفَرَءَيْتُم And do you see مَّا what تَحْرُثُونَ you sow ٦٣
And have you seen that [seed] which you sow?
— Come To Light
ءَأَنتُمْ Is it you (who) تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ cause it to grow أَمْ or نَحْنُ (are) We ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ the Ones Who grow ٦٤
Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
— Come To Light
لَوْ If نَشَآءُ We willed لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ We (would) surely, make it حُطَـٰمًۭا debris فَظَلْتُمْ then you would remain تَفَكَّهُونَ wondering ٦٥
If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,
— Come To Light
إِنَّا Indeed, we لَمُغْرَمُونَ surely are laden with debt ٦٦
[Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;
— Come To Light
بَلْ Nay نَحْنُ we مَحْرُومُونَ (are) deprived ٦٧
Rather, we have been deprived."
— Come To Light
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ Do you see ٱلْمَآءَ the water ٱلَّذِى which تَشْرَبُونَ you drink ٦٨
And have you seen the water that you drink?
— Come To Light
ءَأَنتُمْ Is it you أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ who send it down مِنَ from ٱلْمُزْنِ the rain clouds أَمْ or نَحْنُ We ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ (are) the Ones to send ٦٩
Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?
— Come To Light
لَوْ If نَشَآءُ We willed جَعَلْنَـٰهُ We (could) make it أُجَاجًۭا salty فَلَوْلَا then why are you not grateful تَشْكُرُونَ then why are you not grateful ٧٠
If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?
— Come To Light
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ Do you see ٱلنَّارَ the Fire ٱلَّتِى which تُورُونَ you ignite ٧١
And have you seen the fire that you ignite?
— Come To Light
ءَأَنتُمْ Is it you أَنشَأْتُمْ who produced شَجَرَتَهَآ its tree أَمْ or نَحْنُ We ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ (are) the Producers ٧٢
Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?
— Come To Light
نَحْنُ We جَعَلْنَـٰهَا have made it تَذْكِرَةًۭ a reminder وَمَتَـٰعًۭا and a provision لِّلْمُقْوِينَ for the wayfarers in the desert ٧٣
We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers,
— Come To Light
فَسَبِّحْ So glorify بِٱسْمِ (the) name رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord ٱلْعَظِيمِ the Most Great ٧٤
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
— Come To Light
۞ فَلَآ But nay أُقْسِمُ I swear بِمَوَٰقِعِ by setting ٱلنُّجُومِ (of) the stars ٧٥
Then I swear by the setting of the stars,
— Come To Light
وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it لَقَسَمٌۭ (is) surely an oath لَّوْ if تَعْلَمُونَ you know عَظِيمٌ great ٧٦
And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.
— Come To Light
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it لَقُرْءَانٌۭ (is) surely, a Quran كَرِيمٌۭ noble ٧٧
Indeed, it is a noble Qur’ān.
— Come To Light
فِى In كِتَـٰبٍۢ a Book مَّكْنُونٍۢ well-guarded ٧٨
In a Register well-protected;.
— Come To Light
لَّا None يَمَسُّهُۥٓ touch it إِلَّا except ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ the purified ٧٩
None touch it except the purified [i.e., the angels].
— Come To Light
تَنزِيلٌۭ A Revelation مِّن from رَّبِّ (the) Lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds ٨٠
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
— Come To Light
أَفَبِهَـٰذَا Then is it to this ٱلْحَدِيثِ statement أَنتُم that you مُّدْهِنُونَ (are) indifferent ٨١
Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent
— Come To Light
وَتَجْعَلُونَ And you make رِزْقَكُمْ your provision أَنَّكُمْ that you تُكَذِّبُونَ deny ٨٢
And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?
— Come To Light
فَلَوْلَآ Then why not إِذَا when بَلَغَتِ it reaches ٱلْحُلْقُومَ the throat ٨٣
Then why, when it [i.e., the soul at death] reaches the throat
— Come To Light
وَأَنتُمْ And you حِينَئِذٍۢ (at) that time تَنظُرُونَ look on ٨٤
And you are at that time looking on -
— Come To Light
وَنَحْنُ And We أَقْرَبُ (are) nearer إِلَيْهِ to him مِنكُمْ than you وَلَـٰكِن but لَّا you (do) not see تُبْصِرُونَ you (do) not see ٨٥
And We [i.e., Our angels] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -
— Come To Light
فَلَوْلَآ Then why not إِن if كُنتُمْ you are غَيْرَ not مَدِينِينَ to be recompensed ٨٦
Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,
— Come To Light
تَرْجِعُونَهَآ Bring it back إِن if كُنتُمْ you are صَـٰدِقِينَ truthful ٨٧
Bring it back, if you should be truthful?
— Come To Light
فَأَمَّآ Then إِن if كَانَ he was مِنَ of ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ those brought near ٨٨
And if he [i.e., the deceased] was of those brought near [to Allāh],
— Come To Light
فَرَوْحٌۭ Then rest وَرَيْحَانٌۭ and bounty وَجَنَّتُ and a Garden نَعِيمٍۢ (of) Pleasure ٨٩
Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
— Come To Light
وَأَمَّآ And إِن if كَانَ he was مِنْ of أَصْحَـٰبِ (the) companions ٱلْيَمِينِ (of) the right ٩٠
And if he was of the companions of the right,
— Come To Light
فَسَلَـٰمٌۭ Then, peace لَّكَ for you مِنْ [from] أَصْحَـٰبِ (the) companions ٱلْيَمِينِ (of) the right ٩١
Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."
— Come To Light
وَأَمَّآ But إِن if كَانَ he was مِنَ of ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ the deniers ٱلضَّآلِّينَ the astray ٩٢
But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,
— Come To Light
فَنُزُلٌۭ Then, hospitality مِّنْ of حَمِيمٍۢ (the) scalding water ٩٣
Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water
— Come To Light
وَتَصْلِيَةُ And burning جَحِيمٍ (in) Hellfire ٩٤
And burning in Hellfire.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed هَـٰذَا this لَهُوَ surely, it حَقُّ (is the) truth ٱلْيَقِينِ certain ٩٥
Indeed, this is the true certainty,
— Come To Light
فَسَبِّحْ So glorify بِٱسْمِ (the) name رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord ٱلْعَظِيمِ the Most Great ٩٦
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
— Come To Light
