كُتِبَ Is prescribed عَلَيْكُمُ upon you ٱلْقِتَالُ [the] fighting وَهُوَ while it كُرْهٌۭ (is) hateful لَّكُمْ ۖ to you وَعَسَىٰٓ But perhaps أَن [that] تَكْرَهُوا۟ you dislike شَيْـًۭٔا a thing وَهُوَ and it خَيْرٌۭ (is) good لَّكُمْ ۖ for you وَعَسَىٰٓ and perhaps أَن [that] تُحِبُّوا۟ you love شَيْـًۭٔا a thing وَهُوَ and it شَرٌّۭ (is) bad لَّكُمْ ۗ for you وَٱللَّهُ And Allah يَعْلَمُ knows وَأَنتُمْ while you لَا (do) not تَعْلَمُونَ know ٢١٦

يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you عَنِ about ٱلشَّهْرِ the month ٱلْحَرَامِ [the] sacred قِتَالٍۢ (concerning) fighting فِيهِ ۖ in it قُلْ Say قِتَالٌۭ Fighting فِيهِ therein كَبِيرٌۭ ۖ (is) a great (sin) وَصَدٌّ but hindering (people) عَن from سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah وَكُفْرٌۢ and disbelief بِهِۦ in Him وَٱلْمَسْجِدِ and (preventing access to) Al-Masjid ٱلْحَرَامِ Al-Haraam وَإِخْرَاجُ and driving out أَهْلِهِۦ its people مِنْهُ from it أَكْبَرُ (is) greater (sin) عِندَ near ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah وَٱلْفِتْنَةُ And [the] oppression أَكْبَرُ (is) greater مِنَ than ٱلْقَتْلِ ۗ [the] killing وَلَا And not يَزَالُونَ they will cease يُقَـٰتِلُونَكُمْ (to) fight with you حَتَّىٰ until يَرُدُّوكُمْ they turn you away عَن from دِينِكُمْ your religion إِنِ if ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟ ۚ they are able وَمَن And whoever يَرْتَدِدْ turns away مِنكُمْ among you عَن from دِينِهِۦ his religion فَيَمُتْ then dies وَهُوَ while he كَافِرٌۭ (is) a disbeliever فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ for those حَبِطَتْ became worthless أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ their deeds فِى in ٱلدُّنْيَا the world وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ and the Hereafter وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ And those أَصْحَـٰبُ (are) companions ٱلنَّارِ ۖ (of) the Fire هُمْ they فِيهَا in it خَـٰلِدُونَ (will) abide forever ٢١٧

إِنَّ Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believed وَٱلَّذِينَ and those who هَاجَرُوا۟ emigrated وَجَـٰهَدُوا۟ and strove فِى in سَبِيلِ (the) way ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ those يَرْجُونَ they hope رَحْمَتَ (for) Mercy ٱللَّهِ ۚ (of) Allah وَٱللَّهُ And Allah غَفُورٌۭ (is) Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٌۭ Most Merciful ٢١٨

۞ يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you عَنِ about ٱلْخَمْرِ [the] intoxicants وَٱلْمَيْسِرِ ۖ and [the] games of chance قُلْ Say فِيهِمَآ In both of them إِثْمٌۭ (is) a sin كَبِيرٌۭ great وَمَنَـٰفِعُ and (some) benefits لِلنَّاسِ for [the] people وَإِثْمُهُمَآ But sin of both of them أَكْبَرُ (is) greater مِن than نَّفْعِهِمَا ۗ (the) benefit of (the) two وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ And they ask you مَاذَا what يُنفِقُونَ they (should) spend قُلِ Say ٱلْعَفْوَ ۗ The surplus كَذَٰلِكَ Thus يُبَيِّنُ makes clear ٱللَّهُ Allah لَكُمُ to you ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ [the] Verses لَعَلَّكُمْ so that you may تَتَفَكَّرُونَ ponder ٢١٩
