هَلْ Has أَتَىٰكَ (there) come to you حَدِيثُ (the) news ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ (of) the Overwhelming ١
Has there reached you the report of the Overwhelming [event]?
— Come To Light
88. Surah Al-Ghashiyah
The Overwhelming · Makki · 26 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
وُجُوهٌۭ Faces يَوْمَئِذٍ that Day خَـٰشِعَةٌ (will be) humbled ٢
[Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled,
— Come To Light
عَامِلَةٌۭ Laboring نَّاصِبَةٌۭ exhausted ٣
Working [hard] and exhausted.
— Come To Light
تَصْلَىٰ They will burn نَارًا (in) a Fire حَامِيَةًۭ intensely hot ٤
They will [enter to] burn in an intensely hot Fire.
— Come To Light
تُسْقَىٰ They will be given to drink مِنْ from عَيْنٍ a spring ءَانِيَةٍۢ boiling ٥
They will be given drink from a boiling spring.
— Come To Light
لَّيْسَ Not is لَهُمْ for them طَعَامٌ food إِلَّا except مِن from ضَرِيعٍۢ a bitter thorny plant ٦
For them there will be no food except from a poisonous, thorny plant
— Come To Light
لَّا Not يُسْمِنُ it nourishes وَلَا and not يُغْنِى it avails مِن from جُوعٍۢ hunger ٧
Which neither nourishes nor avails against hunger.
— Come To Light
وُجُوهٌۭ Faces يَوْمَئِذٍۢ that Day نَّاعِمَةٌۭ (will be) joyful ٨
[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.
— Come To Light
لِّسَعْيِهَا With their effort رَاضِيَةٌۭ satisfied ٩
With their effort [they are] satisfied
— Come To Light
فِى In جَنَّةٍ a garden عَالِيَةٍۢ elevated ١٠
In an elevated garden,
— Come To Light
لَّا Not تَسْمَعُ they will hear فِيهَا therein لَـٰغِيَةًۭ vain talk ١١
Wherein they will hear no unsuitable speech.
— Come To Light
فِيهَا Therein عَيْنٌۭ (will be) a spring جَارِيَةٌۭ flowing ١٢
Within it is a flowing spring.
— Come To Light
فِيهَا Therein سُرُرٌۭ (will be) thrones مَّرْفُوعَةٌۭ raised high ١٣
Within it are couches raised high
— Come To Light
وَأَكْوَابٌۭ And cups مَّوْضُوعَةٌۭ put in place ١٤
And cups put in place
— Come To Light
وَنَمَارِقُ And cushions مَصْفُوفَةٌۭ lined up ١٥
And cushions lined up
— Come To Light
وَزَرَابِىُّ And carpets مَبْثُوثَةٌ spread out ١٦
And carpets spread around.
— Come To Light
أَفَلَا Then do not يَنظُرُونَ they look إِلَى towards ٱلْإِبِلِ the camels كَيْفَ how خُلِقَتْ they are created ١٧
Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created?
— Come To Light
وَإِلَى And towards ٱلسَّمَآءِ the sky كَيْفَ how رُفِعَتْ it is raised ١٨
And at the sky - how it is raised?
— Come To Light
وَإِلَى And towards ٱلْجِبَالِ the mountains كَيْفَ how نُصِبَتْ they are fixed ١٩
And at the mountains - how they are erected?
— Come To Light
وَإِلَى And towards ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth كَيْفَ how سُطِحَتْ it is spread out ٢٠
And at the earth - how it is spread out?
— Come To Light
فَذَكِّرْ So remind إِنَّمَآ only أَنتَ you مُذَكِّرٌۭ (are) a reminder ٢١
So remind, [O Muḥammad]; you are only a reminder.
— Come To Light
لَّسْتَ You are not عَلَيْهِم over them بِمُصَيْطِرٍ a controller ٢٢
You are not over them a controller.
— Come To Light
إِلَّا But مَن whoever تَوَلَّىٰ turns away وَكَفَرَ and disbelieves ٢٣
However, he who turns away and disbelieves
— Come To Light
فَيُعَذِّبُهُ Then will punish him ٱللَّهُ Allah ٱلْعَذَابَ (with) the punishment ٱلْأَكْبَرَ greatest ٢٤
Then Allāh will punish him with the greatest punishment.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed إِلَيْنَآ to Us إِيَابَهُمْ (will be) their return ٢٥
Indeed, to Us is their return.
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then إِنَّ indeed عَلَيْنَا upon Us حِسَابَهُم (is) their account ٢٦
Then indeed, upon Us is their account.
