يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ who covers himself ١
O you who covers himself [with a garment],
— Come To Light
74. Surah Al-Muddaththir
The Cloaked One · Makki · 56 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
قُمْ Stand up فَأَنذِرْ and warn ٢
Arise and warn.
— Come To Light
وَرَبَّكَ And your Lord فَكَبِّرْ magnify ٣
And your Lord glorify.
— Come To Light
وَثِيَابَكَ And your clothing فَطَهِّرْ purify ٤
And your clothing purify.
— Come To Light
وَٱلرُّجْزَ And uncleanliness فَٱهْجُرْ avoid ٥
And uncleanliness avoid.
— Come To Light
وَلَا And (do) not تَمْنُن confer favor تَسْتَكْثِرُ (to) acquire more ٦
And do not confer favor to acquire more.
— Come To Light
وَلِرَبِّكَ And for your Lord فَٱصْبِرْ be patient ٧
But for your Lord be patient.
— Come To Light
فَإِذَا Then when نُقِرَ is blown فِى in ٱلنَّاقُورِ the trumpet ٨
And when the trumpet is blown,
— Come To Light
فَذَٰلِكَ That يَوْمَئِذٍۢ Day يَوْمٌ (will be) a Day عَسِيرٌ difficult ٩
That Day will be a difficult day
— Come To Light
عَلَى For ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ the disbelievers غَيْرُ not يَسِيرٍۢ easy ١٠
For the disbelievers - not easy.
— Come To Light
ذَرْنِى Leave Me وَمَنْ and whom خَلَقْتُ I created وَحِيدًۭا alone ١١
Leave Me with the one I created alone
— Come To Light
وَجَعَلْتُ And I granted لَهُۥ to him مَالًۭا wealth مَّمْدُودًۭا extensive ١٢
And to whom I granted extensive wealth
— Come To Light
وَبَنِينَ And children شُهُودًۭا present ١٣
And children present [with him]
— Come To Light
وَمَهَّدتُّ And I spread لَهُۥ for him تَمْهِيدًۭا ease ١٤
And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then يَطْمَعُ he desires أَنْ that أَزِيدَ I (should) add more ١٥
Then he desires that I should add more.
— Come To Light
كَلَّآ ۖ By no means إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he كَانَ has been لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا to Our Verses عَنِيدًۭا stubborn ١٦
No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.
— Come To Light
سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ Soon I will cover Him صَعُودًا (with) a laborious punishment ١٧
I will cover him with arduous torment.
— Come To Light
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he فَكَّرَ thought وَقَدَّرَ and plotted ١٨
Indeed, he thought and deliberated.
— Come To Light
فَقُتِلَ So may he be destroyed كَيْفَ how قَدَّرَ he plotted ١٩
So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then قُتِلَ may he be destroyed كَيْفَ how قَدَّرَ he plotted ٢٠
Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then نَظَرَ he looked ٢١
Then he considered [again];
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then عَبَسَ he frowned وَبَسَرَ and scowled ٢٢
Then he frowned and scowled;
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then أَدْبَرَ he turned back وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ and was proud ٢٣
Then he turned back and was arrogant
— Come To Light
فَقَالَ Then he said إِنْ Not هَـٰذَآ (is) this إِلَّا but سِحْرٌۭ magic يُؤْثَرُ imitated ٢٤
And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].
— Come To Light
إِنْ Not هَـٰذَآ (is) this إِلَّا but قَوْلُ (the) word ٱلْبَشَرِ (of) a human being ٢٥
This is not but the word of a human being."
— Come To Light
سَأُصْلِيهِ Soon I will drive him سَقَرَ (into) Hell ٢٦
I will drive him into Saqar.
— Come To Light
وَمَآ And what أَدْرَىٰكَ can make you know مَا what سَقَرُ (is) Hell ٢٧
And what can make you know what is Saqar?
— Come To Light
لَا Not تُبْقِى it lets remain وَلَا and not تَذَرُ it leaves ٢٨
It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],
— Come To Light
لَوَّاحَةٌۭ Scorching لِّلْبَشَرِ the human (skin) ٢٩
Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.
— Come To Light
عَلَيْهَا Over it تِسْعَةَ (are) nine عَشَرَ teen ٣٠
Over it are nineteen [angels].
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not جَعَلْنَآ We have made أَصْحَـٰبَ keepers ٱلنَّارِ (of) the Fire إِلَّا except مَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭ ۙ Angels وَمَا And not جَعَلْنَا We have made عِدَّتَهُمْ their number إِلَّا except فِتْنَةًۭ (as) a trial لِّلَّذِينَ for those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ that may be certain ٱلَّذِينَ those who أُوتُوا۟ were given ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Scripture وَيَزْدَادَ and may increase ٱلَّذِينَ those who ءَامَنُوٓا۟ believe إِيمَـٰنًۭا ۙ (in) faith وَلَا and not يَرْتَابَ may doubt ٱلَّذِينَ those who أُوتُوا۟ were given ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Scripture وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ and the believers وَلِيَقُولَ and that may say ٱلَّذِينَ those فِى in قُلُوبِهِم their hearts مَّرَضٌۭ (is) a disease وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ and the disbelievers مَاذَآ What أَرَادَ (does) intend ٱللَّهُ Allah بِهَـٰذَا by this مَثَلًۭا ۚ example كَذَٰلِكَ Thus يُضِلُّ does let go astray ٱللَّهُ Allah مَن whom يَشَآءُ He wills وَيَهْدِى and guides مَن whom يَشَآءُ ۚ He wills وَمَا And none يَعْلَمُ knows جُنُودَ (the) hosts رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord إِلَّا except هُوَ ۚ Him وَمَا And not هِىَ it إِلَّا (is) but ذِكْرَىٰ a reminder لِلْبَشَرِ to (the) human beings ٣١
And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.
— Come To Light
كَلَّا Nay وَٱلْقَمَرِ By the moon ٣٢
No! By the moon.
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّيْلِ And the night إِذْ when أَدْبَرَ it departs ٣٣
And [by] the night when it departs.
— Come To Light
وَٱلصُّبْحِ And the morning إِذَآ when أَسْفَرَ it brightens ٣٤
And [by] the morning when it brightens,
— Come To Light
إِنَّهَا Indeed, it لَإِحْدَى (is) surely one ٱلْكُبَرِ (of) the greatest ٣٥
Indeed, it [i.e., the Fire] is of the greatest [afflictions].
— Come To Light
نَذِيرًۭا A warning لِّلْبَشَرِ to (the) human being ٣٦
As a warning to humanity -
— Come To Light
لِمَن To whoever شَآءَ wills مِنكُمْ among you أَن to يَتَقَدَّمَ proceed أَوْ or يَتَأَخَّرَ stay behind ٣٧
To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.
— Come To Light
كُلُّ Every نَفْسٍۭ soul بِمَا for what كَسَبَتْ it has earned رَهِينَةٌ (is) pledged ٣٨
Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained.
— Come To Light
إِلَّآ Except أَصْحَـٰبَ (the) companions ٱلْيَمِينِ (of) the right ٣٩
Except the companions of the right,.
— Come To Light
فِى In جَنَّـٰتٍۢ Gardens يَتَسَآءَلُونَ asking each other ٤٠
[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
— Come To Light
عَنِ About ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ the criminals ٤١
About the criminals,
— Come To Light
مَا What سَلَكَكُمْ led you فِى into سَقَرَ Hell ٤٢
[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"
— Come To Light
قَالُوا۟ They will say لَمْ Not نَكُ we were مِنَ of ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ those who prayed ٤٣
They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,
— Come To Light
وَلَمْ And not نَكُ we used to نُطْعِمُ feed ٱلْمِسْكِينَ the poor ٤٤
Nor did we used to feed the poor.
— Come To Light
وَكُنَّا And we used to نَخُوضُ indulge in vain talk مَعَ with ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ the vain talkers ٤٥
And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],
— Come To Light
وَكُنَّا And we used to نُكَذِّبُ deny بِيَوْمِ (the) Day ٱلدِّينِ (of) the Judgment ٤٦
And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
— Come To Light
حَتَّىٰٓ Until أَتَىٰنَا came to us ٱلْيَقِينُ the certainty ٤٧
Until there came to us the certainty [i.e., death]."
— Come To Light
فَمَا Then not تَنفَعُهُمْ will benefit them شَفَـٰعَةُ intercession ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ (of) the intercessors ٤٨
So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.
— Come To Light
فَمَا Then what لَهُمْ (is) for them عَنِ (that) from ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ the Reminder مُعْرِضِينَ they (are) turning away ٤٩
Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away.
— Come To Light
كَأَنَّهُمْ As if they (were) حُمُرٌۭ donkeys مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌۭ frightened ٥٠
As if they were alarmed donkeys.
— Come To Light
فَرَّتْ Fleeing مِن from قَسْوَرَةٍۭ a lion ٥١
Fleeing from a lion?
— Come To Light
بَلْ Nay يُرِيدُ Desires كُلُّ every ٱمْرِئٍۢ person مِّنْهُمْ of them أَن that يُؤْتَىٰ he may be given صُحُفًۭا pages مُّنَشَّرَةًۭ spread out ٥٢
Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.
— Come To Light
كَلَّا ۖ Nay بَل But لَّا not يَخَافُونَ they fear ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ the Hereafter ٥٣
No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.
— Come To Light
كَلَّآ Nay إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it تَذْكِرَةٌۭ (is) a Reminder ٥٤
No! Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder.
— Come To Light
فَمَن So whoever شَآءَ wills ذَكَرَهُۥ (may) pay heed to it ٥٥
Then whoever wills will remember it.
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not يَذْكُرُونَ will pay heed إِلَّآ except أَن that يَشَآءَ wills ٱللَّهُ ۚ Allah هُوَ He أَهْلُ (is) worthy ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ to be feared وَأَهْلُ and worthy ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ to forgive ٥٦
And they will not remember except that Allāh wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
— Come To Light
