سَأَلَ Asked سَآئِلٌۢ a questioner بِعَذَابٍۢ about a punishment وَاقِعٍۢ bound to happen ١
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen
— Come To Light
70. Surah Al-Ma'arij
The Ascending Stairways · Makki · 44 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ To the disbelievers لَيْسَ not لَهُۥ of it دَافِعٌۭ any preventer ٢
To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.
— Come To Light
مِّنَ From ٱللَّهِ Allah ذِى Owner ٱلْمَعَارِجِ (of) the ways of ascent ٣
[It is] from Allāh, owner of the ways of ascent.
— Come To Light
تَعْرُجُ Ascend ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ the Angels وَٱلرُّوحُ and the Spirit إِلَيْهِ to Him فِى in يَوْمٍۢ a Day كَانَ [is] مِقْدَارُهُۥ its measure خَمْسِينَ (is) fifty أَلْفَ thousand سَنَةٍۢ year(s) ٤
The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.
— Come To Light
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient صَبْرًۭا a patience جَمِيلًا good ٥
So be patient with gracious patience.
— Come To Light
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they يَرَوْنَهُۥ see it بَعِيدًۭا (as) far off ٦
Indeed, they see it [as] distant,
— Come To Light
وَنَرَىٰهُ But We see it قَرِيبًۭا near ٧
But We see it [as] near.
— Come To Light
يَوْمَ (The) Day تَكُونُ will be ٱلسَّمَآءُ the sky كَٱلْمُهْلِ like molten copper ٨
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,
— Come To Light
وَتَكُونُ And will be ٱلْجِبَالُ the mountains كَٱلْعِهْنِ like wool ٩
And the mountains will be like wool,
— Come To Light
وَلَا And not يَسْـَٔلُ will ask حَمِيمٌ a friend حَمِيمًۭا (about) a friend ١٠
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,
— Come To Light
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ They will be made to see each other يَوَدُّ Would wish ٱلْمُجْرِمُ the criminal لَوْ if يَفْتَدِى he (could be) ransomed مِنْ from عَذَابِ (the) punishment يَوْمِئِذٍۭ (of) that Day بِبَنِيهِ by his children ١١
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children.
— Come To Light
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ And his spouse وَأَخِيهِ and his brother ١٢
And his wife and his brother
— Come To Light
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ And his nearest kindred ٱلَّتِى who تُـْٔوِيهِ sheltered him ١٣
And his nearest kindred who shelter him.
— Come To Light
وَمَن And whoever فِى (is) on ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth جَمِيعًۭا all ثُمَّ then يُنجِيهِ it (could) save him ١٤
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.
— Come To Light
كَلَّآ ۖ By no means إِنَّهَا Indeed, it (is) لَظَىٰ surely a Flame of Hell ١٥
No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],
— Come To Light
نَزَّاعَةًۭ A remover لِّلشَّوَىٰ of the skin of the head ١٦
A remover of exteriors.
— Come To Light
تَدْعُوا۟ Inviting مَنْ (him) who أَدْبَرَ turned his back وَتَوَلَّىٰ and went away ١٧
It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]
— Come To Light
وَجَمَعَ And collected فَأَوْعَىٰٓ and hoarded ١٨
And collected [wealth] and hoarded.
— Come To Light
۞ إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ the man خُلِقَ was created هَلُوعًا anxious ١٩
Indeed, mankind was created anxious:
— Come To Light
إِذَا When مَسَّهُ touches him ٱلشَّرُّ the evil جَزُوعًۭا distressed ٢٠
When evil touches him, impatient,
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when مَسَّهُ touches him ٱلْخَيْرُ the good مَنُوعًا withholding ٢١
And when good touches him, withholding [of it],
— Come To Light
إِلَّا Except ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ those who pray ٢٢
Except the observers of prayer -
— Come To Light
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who هُمْ [they] عَلَىٰ at صَلَاتِهِمْ their prayer دَآئِمُونَ (are) constant ٢٣
Those who are constant in their prayer
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who فِىٓ in أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ their wealth حَقٌّۭ (is) a right مَّعْلُومٌۭ known ٢٤
And those within whose wealth is a known right
— Come To Light
لِّلسَّآئِلِ For the one who asks وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ and the deprived ٢٥
For the petitioner and the deprived -
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who يُصَدِّقُونَ accept (the) truth بِيَوْمِ (of the) Day ٱلدِّينِ (of) the Judgment ٢٦
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who هُم [they] مِّنْ of عَذَابِ (the) punishment رَبِّهِم (of) their Lord مُّشْفِقُونَ (are) fearful ٢٧
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed عَذَابَ (the) punishment رَبِّهِمْ (of) your Lord غَيْرُ (is) not مَأْمُونٍۢ to be felt secure (of) ٢٨
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who هُمْ [they] لِفُرُوجِهِمْ their modesty حَـٰفِظُونَ (are) guardians ٢٩
And those who guard their private parts
— Come To Light
إِلَّا Except عَلَىٰٓ from أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ their spouses أَوْ or مَا what مَلَكَتْ they possess أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ rightfully فَإِنَّهُمْ then indeed, they غَيْرُ (are) not مَلُومِينَ blameworthy ٣٠
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed -
— Come To Light
فَمَنِ But whoever ٱبْتَغَىٰ seeks وَرَآءَ beyond ذَٰلِكَ that فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ then those هُمُ [they] ٱلْعَادُونَ (are) the transgressors ٣١
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who هُمْ [they] لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ of their trusts وَعَهْدِهِمْ and their promise رَٰعُونَ (are) observers ٣٢
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive.
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who هُم [they] بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ in their testimonies قَآئِمُونَ stand firm ٣٣
And those who are in their testimonies upright
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who هُمْ [they] عَلَىٰ on صَلَاتِهِمْ their prayer يُحَافِظُونَ keep a guard ٣٤
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:
— Come To Light
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those فِى (will be) in جَنَّـٰتٍۢ Gardens مُّكْرَمُونَ honored ٣٥
They will be in gardens, honored.
— Come To Light
فَمَالِ So what is with ٱلَّذِينَ those who كَفَرُوا۟ disbelieve قِبَلَكَ before you مُهْطِعِينَ (they) hasten ٣٦
So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muḥammad],
— Come To Light
عَنِ On ٱلْيَمِينِ the right وَعَنِ and on ٱلشِّمَالِ the left عِزِينَ (in) separate groups ٣٧
[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?
— Come To Light
أَيَطْمَعُ Does long كُلُّ every ٱمْرِئٍۢ person مِّنْهُمْ among them أَن that يُدْخَلَ he enters جَنَّةَ a Garden نَعِيمٍۢ (of) Delight ٣٨
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?
— Come To Light
كَلَّآ ۖ By no means إِنَّا Indeed, We خَلَقْنَـٰهُم [We] have created them مِّمَّا from what يَعْلَمُونَ they know ٣٩
No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.
— Come To Light
فَلَآ But nay أُقْسِمُ I swear بِرَبِّ by (the) Lord ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ (of) the risings وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ and the settings إِنَّا that We لَقَـٰدِرُونَ (are) surely Able ٤٠
So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings that indeed We are able
— Come To Light
