بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ

58:1

قَدْ Indeed سَمِعَ Allah has heard ٱللَّهُ Allah has heard قَوْلَ (the) speech ٱلَّتِى (of one) who تُجَـٰدِلُكَ disputes with you فِى concerning زَوْجِهَا her husband وَتَشْتَكِىٓ and she directs her complaint إِلَى to ٱللَّهِ Allah وَٱللَّهُ And Allah يَسْمَعُ hears تَحَاوُرَكُمَآ ۚ (the) dialogue of both of you إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah سَمِيعٌۢ (is) All-Hearer بَصِيرٌ All-Seer ١

Certainly has Allāh heard the speech of the one who argues [i.e., pleads] with you, [O Muḥammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allāh. And Allāh hears your dialogue; indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Seeing.

58:2

ٱلَّذِينَ Those who يُظَـٰهِرُونَ pronounce zihar مِنكُم among you مِّن [from] نِّسَآئِهِم (to) their wives مَّا not هُنَّ they أُمَّهَـٰتِهِمْ ۖ (are) their mothers إِنْ Not أُمَّهَـٰتُهُمْ (are) their mothers إِلَّا except ٱلَّـٰٓـِٔى those who وَلَدْنَهُمْ ۚ gave them birth وَإِنَّهُمْ And indeed, they لَيَقُولُونَ surely say مُنكَرًۭا an evil مِّنَ [of] ٱلْقَوْلِ [the] word وَزُورًۭا ۚ and a lie وَإِنَّ But indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah لَعَفُوٌّ (is) surely, Oft-Pardoning غَفُورٌۭ Oft-Forgiving ٢

Those who pronounce ẓihār among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allāh is Pardoning and Forgiving.

58:3

وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who يُظَـٰهِرُونَ pronounce zihar مِن [from] نِّسَآئِهِمْ (to) their wives ثُمَّ then يَعُودُونَ go back لِمَا on what قَالُوا۟ they said فَتَحْرِيرُ then freeing رَقَبَةٍۢ (of) a slave مِّن before قَبْلِ before أَن [that] يَتَمَآسَّا ۚ they touch each other ذَٰلِكُمْ That تُوعَظُونَ you are admonished بِهِۦ ۚ to it وَٱللَّهُ And Allah بِمَا of what تَعْمَلُونَ you do خَبِيرٌۭ (is) All-Aware ٣

And those who pronounce ẓihār from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allāh is Aware of what you do.

58:4

فَمَن Then whoever لَّمْ (does) not يَجِدْ find فَصِيَامُ then fasting شَهْرَيْنِ (for) two months مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ consecutively مِن before قَبْلِ before أَن [that] يَتَمَآسَّا ۖ they both touch each other فَمَن But (he) who لَّمْ not يَسْتَطِعْ is able فَإِطْعَامُ then (the) feeding سِتِّينَ (of) sixty مِسْكِينًۭا ۚ needy one(s) ذَٰلِكَ That لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟ so that you may believe بِٱللَّهِ in Allah وَرَسُولِهِۦ ۚ and His Messenger وَتِلْكَ and these حُدُودُ (are the) limits ٱللَّهِ ۗ (of) Allah وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ and for the disbelievers عَذَابٌ (is) a punishment أَلِيمٌ painful ٤

And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allāh and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allāh. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.

58:5

إِنَّ Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ those who يُحَآدُّونَ oppose ٱللَّهَ Allah وَرَسُولَهُۥ and His Messenger كُبِتُوا۟ (will) be disgraced كَمَا as كُبِتَ were disgraced ٱلَّذِينَ those مِن before them قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ before them وَقَدْ And certainly أَنزَلْنَآ We have sent down ءَايَـٰتٍۭ Verses بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ ۚ clear وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ And for the disbelievers عَذَابٌۭ (is) a punishment مُّهِينٌۭ humiliating ٥

Indeed, those who oppose Allāh and His Messenger are abased as those before them were abased. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment

58:6

يَوْمَ (On the) Day يَبْعَثُهُمُ (when) Allah will raise them ٱللَّهُ (when) Allah will raise them جَمِيعًۭا all فَيُنَبِّئُهُم and inform them بِمَا of what عَمِلُوٓا۟ ۚ they did أَحْصَىٰهُ Allah has recorded it ٱللَّهُ Allah has recorded it وَنَسُوهُ ۚ while they forgot it وَٱللَّهُ And Allah عَلَىٰ (is) over كُلِّ all شَىْءٍۢ things شَهِيدٌ a Witness ٦

On the Day when Allāh will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allāh had enumerated it, while they forgot it; and Allāh is, over all things, Witness.

58:7

أَلَمْ Do not تَرَ you see أَنَّ that ٱللَّهَ Allah يَعْلَمُ knows مَا whatever فِى (is) in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَمَا and whatever فِى (is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ ۖ the earth مَا Not يَكُونُ there is مِن any نَّجْوَىٰ secret counsel ثَلَـٰثَةٍ (of) three إِلَّا but هُوَ He (is) رَابِعُهُمْ (the) fourth of them وَلَا and not خَمْسَةٍ five إِلَّا but هُوَ He (is) سَادِسُهُمْ (the) sixth of them وَلَآ and not أَدْنَىٰ less مِن than ذَٰلِكَ that وَلَآ and not أَكْثَرَ more إِلَّا but هُوَ He مَعَهُمْ (is) with them أَيْنَ wherever مَا wherever كَانُوا۟ ۖ they are ثُمَّ Then يُنَبِّئُهُم He will inform them بِمَا of what عَمِلُوا۟ they did يَوْمَ (on the) Day ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ (of) the Resurrection إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah بِكُلِّ of every شَىْءٍ thing عَلِيمٌ (is) All-Knower ٧

Have you not considered that Allāh knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? There are not three in a private conversation but that He is the fourth of them, nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.

58:8

أَلَمْ Do not تَرَ you see إِلَى [to] ٱلَّذِينَ those who نُهُوا۟ were forbidden عَنِ from ٱلنَّجْوَىٰ secret counsels ثُمَّ then يَعُودُونَ they return لِمَا to what نُهُوا۟ they were forbidden عَنْهُ from [it] وَيَتَنَـٰجَوْنَ and they hold secret counsels بِٱلْإِثْمِ for sin وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ and aggression وَمَعْصِيَتِ and disobedience ٱلرَّسُولِ (to) the Messenger وَإِذَا And when جَآءُوكَ they come to you حَيَّوْكَ they greet you بِمَا with what لَمْ not يُحَيِّكَ greets you بِهِ therewith ٱللَّهُ Allah وَيَقُولُونَ and they say فِىٓ among أَنفُسِهِمْ themselves لَوْلَا Why (does) not يُعَذِّبُنَا Allah punish us ٱللَّهُ Allah punish us بِمَا for what نَقُولُ ۚ we say حَسْبُهُمْ Sufficient (for) them جَهَنَّمُ (is) Hell يَصْلَوْنَهَا ۖ they will burn in it فَبِئْسَ and worst is ٱلْمَصِيرُ the destination ٨

Have you not considered those who were forbidden from private conversation [i.e., ridicule and conspiracy] and then return to that which they were forbidden and converse among themselves about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with that [word] by which Allāh does not greet you and say among themselves, "Why does Allāh not punish us for what we say?" Sufficient for them is Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the destination.

58:9

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe ٱلَّذِينَ O you who believe ءَامَنُوٓا۟ O you who believe إِذَا When تَنَـٰجَيْتُمْ you hold secret counsel فَلَا then (do) not تَتَنَـٰجَوْا۟ hold secret counsel بِٱلْإِثْمِ for sin وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ and aggression وَمَعْصِيَتِ and disobedience ٱلرَّسُولِ (to) the Messenger وَتَنَـٰجَوْا۟ but hold secret counsel بِٱلْبِرِّ for righteousness وَٱلتَّقْوَىٰ ۖ and piety وَٱتَّقُوا۟ And fear ٱللَّهَ Allah ٱلَّذِىٓ the One Who إِلَيْهِ to Him تُحْشَرُونَ you will be gathered ٩

O you who have believed, when you converse privately, do not converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger but converse about righteousness and piety. And fear Allāh, to whom you will be gathered.

58:10

إِنَّمَا Only ٱلنَّجْوَىٰ the secret counsels مِنَ (are) from ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ the Shaitaan لِيَحْزُنَ that he may grieve ٱلَّذِينَ those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believe وَلَيْسَ but not بِضَآرِّهِمْ he (can) harm them شَيْـًٔا (in) anything إِلَّا except بِإِذْنِ by Allah's permission ٱللَّهِ ۚ by Allah's permission وَعَلَى And upon ٱللَّهِ Allah فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ let put (their) trust ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ the believers ١٠

Private conversation is only from Satan that he may grieve those who have believed, but he will not harm them at all except by permission of Allāh. And upon Allāh let the believers rely.

58:11

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe ٱلَّذِينَ O you who believe ءَامَنُوٓا۟ O you who believe إِذَا When قِيلَ it is said لَكُمْ to you تَفَسَّحُوا۟ Make room فِى in ٱلْمَجَـٰلِسِ the assemblies فَٱفْسَحُوا۟ then make room يَفْسَحِ Allah will make room ٱللَّهُ Allah will make room لَكُمْ ۖ for you وَإِذَا And when قِيلَ it is said ٱنشُزُوا۟ Rise up فَٱنشُزُوا۟ then rise up يَرْفَعِ Allah will raise ٱللَّهُ Allah will raise ٱلَّذِينَ those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believe مِنكُمْ among you وَٱلَّذِينَ and those who أُوتُوا۟ were given ٱلْعِلْمَ the knowledge دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ ۚ (in) degrees وَٱللَّهُ And Allah بِمَا of what تَعْمَلُونَ you do خَبِيرٌۭ (is) All-Aware ١١

O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allāh will make space for you. And when you are told, "Arise," then arise; Allāh will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allāh is Aware of what you do.

58:12

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe ٱلَّذِينَ O you who believe ءَامَنُوٓا۟ O you who believe إِذَا When نَـٰجَيْتُمُ you privately consult ٱلرَّسُولَ the Messenger فَقَدِّمُوا۟ then offer بَيْنَ before يَدَىْ before نَجْوَىٰكُمْ your private consultation صَدَقَةًۭ ۚ charity ذَٰلِكَ That خَيْرٌۭ (is) better لَّكُمْ for you وَأَطْهَرُ ۚ and purer فَإِن But if لَّمْ not تَجِدُوا۟ you find فَإِنَّ then indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah غَفُورٌۭ (is) Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٌ Most Merciful ١٢

O you who have believed, when you [wish to] privately consult the Messenger, present before your consultation a charity. That is better for you and purer. But if you find not [the means] - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

58:13

ءَأَشْفَقْتُمْ Are you afraid أَن to تُقَدِّمُوا۟ offer بَيْنَ before يَدَىْ before نَجْوَىٰكُمْ your private consultation صَدَقَـٰتٍۢ ۚ charities فَإِذْ Then when لَمْ you do not تَفْعَلُوا۟ you do not وَتَابَ and Allah has forgiven ٱللَّهُ and Allah has forgiven عَلَيْكُمْ you فَأَقِيمُوا۟ then establish ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ the prayer وَءَاتُوا۟ and give ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ the zakah وَأَطِيعُوا۟ and obey ٱللَّهَ Allah وَرَسُولَهُۥ ۚ and His Messenger وَٱللَّهُ And Allah خَبِيرٌۢ (is) All-Aware بِمَا of what تَعْمَلُونَ you do ١٣

Have you feared to present before your consultation charities? Then when you do not and Allāh has forgiven you, then [at least] establish prayer and give zakāh and obey Allāh and His Messenger. And Allāh is Aware of what you do.

58:14

۞ أَلَمْ Do not تَرَ you see إِلَى [to] ٱلَّذِينَ those who تَوَلَّوْا۟ take as allies قَوْمًا a people غَضِبَ wrath ٱللَّهُ (of) Allah عَلَيْهِم (is) upon them مَّا They (are) not هُم They (are) not مِّنكُمْ of you وَلَا and not مِنْهُمْ of them وَيَحْلِفُونَ and they swear عَلَى to ٱلْكَذِبِ the lie وَهُمْ while they يَعْلَمُونَ know ١٤

Have you not considered those who make allies of a people with whom Allāh has become angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to untruth while they know [they are lying].

58:15

أَعَدَّ Allah has prepared ٱللَّهُ Allah has prepared لَهُمْ for them عَذَابًۭا a punishment شَدِيدًا ۖ severe إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, [they] سَآءَ evil is مَا what كَانُوا۟ they used to يَعْمَلُونَ do ١٥

Allāh has prepared for them a severe punishment. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

58:16

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ They have taken أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ their oaths جُنَّةًۭ (as) a cover فَصَدُّوا۟ so they hinder عَن from سَبِيلِ (the) way of Allah ٱللَّهِ (the) way of Allah فَلَهُمْ so for them عَذَابٌۭ (is) a punishment مُّهِينٌۭ humiliating ١٦

They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allāh, and for them is a humiliating punishment.

— Come To Light

58:17

لَّن Never تُغْنِىَ will avail عَنْهُمْ them أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ their wealth وَلَآ and not أَوْلَـٰدُهُم their children مِّنَ against ٱللَّهِ Allah شَيْـًٔا ۚ (in) anything أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those أَصْحَـٰبُ (will be) companions ٱلنَّارِ ۖ (of) the Fire هُمْ they فِيهَا in it خَـٰلِدُونَ will abide forever ١٧

Never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allāh at all. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally

58:18

يَوْمَ (On the) Day يَبْعَثُهُمُ Allah will raise them ٱللَّهُ Allah will raise them جَمِيعًۭا all فَيَحْلِفُونَ then they will swear لَهُۥ to Him كَمَا as يَحْلِفُونَ they swear لَكُمْ ۖ to you وَيَحْسَبُونَ And they think أَنَّهُمْ that they عَلَىٰ (are) on شَىْءٍ ۚ something أَلَآ No doubt إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they هُمُ [they] ٱلْكَـٰذِبُونَ (are) the liars ١٨

On the Day Allāh will resurrect them all, and they will swear to Him as they swear to you and think that they are [standing] on something. Unquestionably, it is they who are the liars.

— Come To Light

58:19

ٱسْتَحْوَذَ Has overcome عَلَيْهِمُ them ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ the Shaitaan فَأَنسَىٰهُمْ so he made them forget ذِكْرَ (the) remembrance ٱللَّهِ ۚ (of) Allah أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those حِزْبُ (are the) party ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ۚ (of) the Shaitaan أَلَآ No doubt إِنَّ Indeed حِزْبَ (the) party ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ (of) the Shaitaan هُمُ they ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ (will be) the losers ١٩

Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allāh. Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan - they will be the losers.

58:20

إِنَّ Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ those who يُحَآدُّونَ oppose ٱللَّهَ Allah وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ and His Messenger أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ those فِى (will be) among ٱلْأَذَلِّينَ the most humiliated ٢٠

Indeed, the ones who oppose Allāh and His Messenger - those will be among the most humbled.
