وَٱلنَّجْمِ By the star إِذَا when هَوَىٰ it goes down ١
By the star when it descends,
— Come To Light
53. Surah An-Najm
The Star · Makki · 62 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
مَا Not ضَلَّ has strayed صَاحِبُكُمْ your companion وَمَا and not غَوَىٰ has he erred ٢
Your companion [i.e., Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not يَنطِقُ he speaks عَنِ from ٱلْهَوَىٰٓ the desire ٣
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
— Come To Light
إِنْ Not هُوَ it إِلَّا (is) except وَحْىٌۭ a revelation يُوحَىٰ revealed ٤
It is not but a revelation revealed,
— Come To Light
عَلَّمَهُۥ Has taught him شَدِيدُ the (one) mighty ٱلْقُوَىٰ (in) power ٥
Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] -
— Come To Light
ذُو Possessor of soundness مِرَّةٍۢ Possessor of soundness فَٱسْتَوَىٰ And he rose ٦
One of soundness. And he rose to [his] true form
— Come To Light
وَهُوَ While he بِٱلْأُفُقِ (was) in the horizon ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ the highest ٧
While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then دَنَا he approached فَتَدَلَّىٰ and came down ٨
Then he approached and descended
— Come To Light
فَكَانَ And was قَابَ (at) a distance قَوْسَيْنِ (of) two bow-(lengths) أَوْ or أَدْنَىٰ nearer ٩
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
— Come To Light
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ So he revealed إِلَىٰ to عَبْدِهِۦ His slave مَآ what أَوْحَىٰ he revealed ١٠
And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed [i.e., conveyed].
— Come To Light
مَا Not كَذَبَ lied ٱلْفُؤَادُ the heart مَا what رَأَىٰٓ it saw ١١
The heart did not lie [about] what it saw.
— Come To Light
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ Then will you dispute with him عَلَىٰ about مَا what يَرَىٰ he saw ١٢
So will you dispute with him over what he saw?
— Come To Light
وَلَقَدْ And certainly رَءَاهُ he saw him نَزْلَةً (in) descent أُخْرَىٰ another ١٣
And he certainly saw him in another descent
— Come To Light
عِندَ Near سِدْرَةِ (the) Lote Tree ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ (of) the utmost boundary ١٤
At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -
— Come To Light
عِندَهَا Near it جَنَّةُ (is the) Garden ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ (of) Abode ١٥
Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise] -
— Come To Light
إِذْ When يَغْشَى covered ٱلسِّدْرَةَ the Lote Tree مَا what يَغْشَىٰ covers ١٦
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].
— Come To Light
مَا Not زَاغَ swerved ٱلْبَصَرُ the sight وَمَا and not طَغَىٰ it transgressed ١٧
The sight [of the Prophet (ﷺ)] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].
— Come To Light
لَقَدْ Certainly رَأَىٰ he saw مِنْ of ءَايَـٰتِ (the) Signs رَبِّهِ (of) his Lord ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ the Greatest ١٨
He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
— Come To Light
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ So have you seen ٱللَّـٰتَ the Lat وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ and the Uzza ١٩
So have you considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā?
— Come To Light
وَمَنَوٰةَ And Manat ٱلثَّالِثَةَ the third ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓ the other ٢٠
And Manāt, the third - the other one?
— Come To Light
أَلَكُمُ Is for you ٱلذَّكَرُ the male وَلَهُ and for Him ٱلْأُنثَىٰ the female ٢١
Is the male for you and for Him the female?
— Come To Light
تِلْكَ This إِذًۭا then قِسْمَةٌۭ (is) a division ضِيزَىٰٓ unfair ٢٢
That, then, is an unjust division.
— Come To Light
إِنْ Not هِىَ they إِلَّآ (are) except أَسْمَآءٌۭ names سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ you have named them أَنتُمْ you وَءَابَآؤُكُم and your forefathers مَّآ not أَنزَلَ has Allah sent down ٱللَّهُ has Allah sent down بِهَا for it مِن any سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ authority إِن Not يَتَّبِعُونَ they follow إِلَّا except ٱلظَّنَّ assumption وَمَا and what تَهْوَى desire ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ the(ir) souls وَلَقَدْ And certainly جَآءَهُم has come to them مِّن from رَّبِّهِمُ their Lord ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ the guidance ٢٣
They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allāh has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.
— Come To Light
أَمْ Or لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ (is) for man مَا what تَمَنَّىٰ he wishes ٢٤
Or is there for man whatever he wishes?
— Come To Light
فَلِلَّهِ But for Allah ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ (is) the last وَٱلْأُولَىٰ and the first ٢٥
Rather, to Allāh belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
— Come To Light
۞ وَكَم And how many مِّن of مَّلَكٍۢ (the) Angels فِى in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens لَا not تُغْنِى will avail شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ their intercession شَيْـًٔا anything إِلَّا except مِنۢ after بَعْدِ after أَن [that] يَأْذَنَ Allah has given permission ٱللَّهُ Allah has given permission لِمَن for whom يَشَآءُ He wills وَيَرْضَىٰٓ and approves ٢٦
And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allāh has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ those who لَا (do) not يُؤْمِنُونَ believe بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ in the Hereafter لَيُسَمُّونَ surely they name ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ the Angels تَسْمِيَةَ name(s) ٱلْأُنثَىٰ (of) female ٢٧
Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names,
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not لَهُم for them بِهِۦ about it مِنْ any عِلْمٍ ۖ knowledge إِن Not يَتَّبِعُونَ they follow إِلَّا but ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ assumption وَإِنَّ And indeed ٱلظَّنَّ the assumption لَا (does) not يُغْنِى avail مِنَ against ٱلْحَقِّ the truth شَيْـًۭٔا anything ٢٨
And they have thereof no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all.
— Come To Light
فَأَعْرِضْ So turn away عَن from مَّن (him) who تَوَلَّىٰ turns away عَن from ذِكْرِنَا Our Reminder وَلَمْ and not يُرِدْ he desires إِلَّا except ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ the life ٱلدُّنْيَا (of) the world ٢٩
So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life.
— Come To Light
ذَٰلِكَ That مَبْلَغُهُم (is) their sum مِّنَ of ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ knowledge إِنَّ Indeed رَبَّكَ your Lord هُوَ (is) He (Who) أَعْلَمُ knows best بِمَن (he) who ضَلَّ strays عَن from سَبِيلِهِۦ His Path وَهُوَ and He أَعْلَمُ knows best بِمَنِ (he) who ٱهْتَدَىٰ is guided ٣٠
That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.
— Come To Light
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah مَا (is) whatever فِى (is) in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَمَا and whatever فِى (is) in ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth لِيَجْزِىَ that He may recompense ٱلَّذِينَ those who أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ do evil بِمَا with what عَمِلُوا۟ they have done وَيَجْزِىَ and recompense ٱلَّذِينَ those who أَحْسَنُوا۟ do good بِٱلْحُسْنَى with the best ٣١
And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -
— Come To Light
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who يَجْتَنِبُونَ avoid كَبَـٰٓئِرَ great ٱلْإِثْمِ sins وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ and the immoralities إِلَّا except ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ the small faults إِنَّ indeed رَبَّكَ your Lord وَٰسِعُ (is) vast ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ (in) forgiveness هُوَ He أَعْلَمُ (is) most knowing about you بِكُمْ (is) most knowing about you إِذْ when أَنشَأَكُم He produced you مِّنَ from ٱلْأَرْضِ the earth وَإِذْ and when أَنتُمْ you (were) أَجِنَّةٌۭ fetuses فِى in بُطُونِ (the) wombs أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ (of) your mothers فَلَا So (do) not تُزَكُّوٓا۟ ascribe purity أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ (to) yourselves هُوَ He أَعْلَمُ knows best بِمَنِ (he) who ٱتَّقَىٰٓ fears ٣٢
Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.
— Come To Light
أَفَرَءَيْتَ Did you see ٱلَّذِى the one who تَوَلَّىٰ turned away ٣٣
Have you seen the one who turned away
— Come To Light
وَأَعْطَىٰ And gave قَلِيلًۭا a little وَأَكْدَىٰٓ and withheld ٣٤
And gave a little and [then] refrained?
— Come To Light
أَعِندَهُۥ Is with him عِلْمُ (the) knowledge ٱلْغَيْبِ (of) the unseen فَهُوَ so he يَرَىٰٓ sees ٣٥
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?
— Come To Light
أَمْ Or لَمْ not يُنَبَّأْ he was informed بِمَا with what فِى (was) in صُحُفِ (the) Scriptures مُوسَىٰ (of) Musa ٣٦
Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses
— Come To Light
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ And Ibrahim ٱلَّذِى who وَفَّىٰٓ fulfilled ٣٧
And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -
— Come To Light
أَلَّا That not تَزِرُ will bear وَازِرَةٌۭ a bearer of burdens وِزْرَ (the) burden أُخْرَىٰ (of) another ٣٨
That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
— Come To Light
وَأَن And that لَّيْسَ is not لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ for man إِلَّا except مَا what سَعَىٰ he strives (for) ٣٩
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّ And that سَعْيَهُۥ his striving سَوْفَ will soon يُرَىٰ be seen ٤٠
And that his effort is going to be seen -
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then يُجْزَىٰهُ he will be recompensed for it ٱلْجَزَآءَ the recompense ٱلْأَوْفَىٰ the fullest ٤١
Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense -
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّ And that إِلَىٰ to رَبِّكَ your Lord ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰ (is) the final goal ٤٢
And that to your Lord is the finality
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He هُوَ [He] أَضْحَكَ makes (one) laugh وَأَبْكَىٰ and makes (one) weep ٤٣
And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He هُوَ [He] أَمَاتَ causes death وَأَحْيَا and gives life ٤٤
And that it is He who causes death and gives life
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He خَلَقَ created ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ the pairs ٱلذَّكَرَ the male وَٱلْأُنثَىٰ and the female ٤٥
And that He creates the two mates - the male and female -
— Come To Light
مِن From نُّطْفَةٍ a semen-drop إِذَا when تُمْنَىٰ it is emitted ٤٦
From a sperm-drop when it is emitted
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّ And that عَلَيْهِ upon Him ٱلنَّشْأَةَ (is) the bringing forth ٱلْأُخْرَىٰ another ٤٧
And that [incumbent] upon Him is the other [i.e., next] creation.
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He هُوَ [He] أَغْنَىٰ enriches وَأَقْنَىٰ and suffices ٤٨
And that it is He who enriches and suffices
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He هُوَ [He] رَبُّ (is the) Lord ٱلشِّعْرَىٰ (of) Sirius ٤٩
And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius.
— Come To Light
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ And that He أَهْلَكَ destroyed عَادًا Aad ٱلْأُولَىٰ the first ٥٠
And that He destroyed the first [people of] ʿAad.
— Come To Light
وَثَمُودَا۟ And Thamud فَمَآ so not أَبْقَىٰ He spared ٥١
And Thamūd - and He did not spare [them] -
— Come To Light
وَقَوْمَ And (the) people نُوحٍۢ (of) Nuh مِّن before قَبْلُ ۖ before إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they كَانُوا۟ they were هُمْ they were أَظْلَمَ more unjust وَأَطْغَىٰ and more rebellious ٥٢
And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.
— Come To Light
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ And the overturned cities أَهْوَىٰ He overthrew ٥٣
And the overturned towns He hurled down.
— Come To Light
فَغَشَّىٰهَا So covered them مَا what غَشَّىٰ covered ٥٤
And covered them by that which He covered.
— Come To Light
فَبِأَىِّ Then which (of) ءَالَآءِ the Favors رَبِّكَ (of) your Lord تَتَمَارَىٰ will you doubt ٥٥
Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?
— Come To Light
هَـٰذَا This نَذِيرٌۭ (is) a warner مِّنَ from ٱلنُّذُرِ the warners ٱلْأُولَىٰٓ the former ٥٦
This [Prophet (ﷺ)] is a warner from [i.e., like] the former warners.
— Come To Light
أَزِفَتِ Has approached ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُ the Approaching Day ٥٧
The Approaching Day has approached.
— Come To Light
لَيْسَ Not is لَهَا for it مِن besides دُونِ besides ٱللَّهِ Allah كَاشِفَةٌ any remover ٥٨
Of it, [from those] besides Allāh, there is no remover.
— Come To Light
أَفَمِنْ Then of هَـٰذَا this ٱلْحَدِيثِ statement تَعْجَبُونَ you wonder ٥٩
Then at this statement do you wonder?
— Come To Light
وَتَضْحَكُونَ And you laugh وَلَا and (do) not تَبْكُونَ weep ٦٠
And you laugh and do not weep
— Come To Light
وَأَنتُمْ While you سَـٰمِدُونَ amuse (yourselves) ٦١
While you are proudly sporting?
— Come To Light
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ So prostrate لِلَّهِ to Allah وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩ and worship (Him) ٦٢
So prostrate to Allāh and worship [Him].
— Come To Light
