44. Surah Ad-Dukhan
The Smoke · Makki · 59 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ By the Book ٱلْمُبِينِ the clear ٢
By the clear Book,
— Come To Light
إِنَّآ Indeed, We أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ revealed it فِى in لَيْلَةٍۢ a Night مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ Blessed إِنَّا Indeed, We كُنَّا [We] are مُنذِرِينَ (ever) warning ٣
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].
— Come To Light
فِيهَا Therein يُفْرَقُ is made distinct كُلُّ every أَمْرٍ affair حَكِيمٍ wise ٤
Therein [i.e., on that night] is made distinct every precise matter -
— Come To Light
أَمْرًۭا A command مِّنْ from عِندِنَآ ۚ Us إِنَّا Indeed, We كُنَّا [We] are مُرْسِلِينَ (ever) sending ٥
[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]
— Come To Light
رَحْمَةًۭ As Mercy مِّن from رَّبِّكَ ۚ your Lord إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, He هُوَ [He] ٱلسَّمِيعُ (is) the All-Hearer ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knower ٦
As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing,
— Come To Light
رَبِّ Lord ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ (of) the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth وَمَا and whatever بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ (is) between both of them إِن if كُنتُم you are مُّوقِنِينَ certain ٧
Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain.
— Come To Light
لَآ (There is) no إِلَـٰهَ god إِلَّا except هُوَ Him يُحْىِۦ He gives life وَيُمِيتُ ۖ and causes death رَبُّكُمْ your Lord وَرَبُّ and (the) Lord ءَابَآئِكُمُ (of) your fathers ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ the former ٨
There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.
— Come To Light
بَلْ Nay هُمْ they فِى (are) in شَكٍّۢ doubt يَلْعَبُونَ playing ٩
But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.
— Come To Light
فَٱرْتَقِبْ Then watch يَوْمَ (for the) Day تَأْتِى (when) will bring ٱلسَّمَآءُ the sky بِدُخَانٍۢ smoke مُّبِينٍۢ visible ١٠
Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke
— Come To Light
يَغْشَى Enveloping ٱلنَّاسَ ۖ the people هَـٰذَا This عَذَابٌ (will be) a punishment أَلِيمٌۭ painful ١١
Covering the people; this is a painful torment.
— Come To Light
رَّبَّنَا Our Lord ٱكْشِفْ Remove عَنَّا from us ٱلْعَذَابَ the punishment إِنَّا indeed, we مُؤْمِنُونَ (are) believers ١٢
[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers."
— Come To Light
أَنَّىٰ How can لَهُمُ (there be) for them ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ the reminder وَقَدْ when verily جَآءَهُمْ had come to them رَسُولٌۭ a Messenger مُّبِينٌۭ clear ١٣
How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger.
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then تَوَلَّوْا۟ they turned away عَنْهُ from him وَقَالُوا۟ and said مُعَلَّمٌۭ One taught مَّجْنُونٌ a mad man ١٤
Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman."
— Come To Light
إِنَّا Indeed, We كَاشِفُوا۟ (will) remove ٱلْعَذَابِ the punishment قَلِيلًا ۚ a little إِنَّكُمْ indeed, you عَآئِدُونَ (will) return ١٥
Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].
— Come To Light
يَوْمَ (The) Day نَبْطِشُ We will seize ٱلْبَطْشَةَ (with) the seizure ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ the greatest إِنَّا indeed, We مُنتَقِمُونَ (will) take retribution ١٦
The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.
— Come To Light
۞ وَلَقَدْ And certainly فَتَنَّا We tried قَبْلَهُمْ before them قَوْمَ (the) people فِرْعَوْنَ (of) Firaun وَجَآءَهُمْ and came to them رَسُولٌۭ a Messenger كَرِيمٌ noble ١٧
And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger [i.e., Moses],
— Come To Light
أَنْ That أَدُّوٓا۟ Deliver إِلَىَّ to me عِبَادَ (the) servants ٱللَّهِ ۖ (of) Allah إِنِّى Indeed, I am لَكُمْ to you رَسُولٌ a Messenger أَمِينٌۭ trustworthy ١٨
[Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allāh. Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger,"
— Come To Light
وَأَن And that لَّا (do) not تَعْلُوا۟ exalt yourselves عَلَى against ٱللَّهِ ۖ Allah إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I ءَاتِيكُم [I] have come to you بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ with an authority مُّبِينٍۢ clear ١٩
And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allāh. Indeed, I have come to you with clear evidence.
— Come To Light
وَإِنِّى And indeed, I عُذْتُ [I] seek refuge بِرَبِّى with my Lord وَرَبِّكُمْ and your Lord أَن lest تَرْجُمُونِ you stone me ٢٠
And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.
— Come To Light
وَإِن And if لَّمْ not تُؤْمِنُوا۟ you believe لِى me فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ then leave me alone ٢١
But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."
— Come To Light
فَدَعَا So he called رَبَّهُۥٓ his Lord أَنَّ That هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ these قَوْمٌۭ (are) a people مُّجْرِمُونَ criminals ٢٢
And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.
— Come To Light
فَأَسْرِ Then "Set out بِعِبَادِى with My slaves لَيْلًا (by) night إِنَّكُم Indeed, you مُّتَّبَعُونَ (will be) followed ٢٣
[Allāh said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.
— Come To Light
وَٱتْرُكِ And leave ٱلْبَحْرَ the sea رَهْوًا ۖ at rest إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they جُندٌۭ (are) an army مُّغْرَقُونَ (to be) drowned ٢٤
And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."
— Come To Light
كَمْ How many تَرَكُوا۟ (did) they leave مِن of جَنَّـٰتٍۢ gardens وَعُيُونٍۢ and springs ٢٥
How much they left behind of gardens and springs
— Come To Light
وَزُرُوعٍۢ And cornfields وَمَقَامٍۢ and places كَرِيمٍۢ noble ٢٦
And crops and noble sites
— Come To Light
وَنَعْمَةٍۢ And pleasant things كَانُوا۟ they used to فِيهَا therein فَـٰكِهِينَ take delight ٢٧
And comfort wherein they were amused.
— Come To Light
كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ Thus وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا And We made it (an) inherit(ance) قَوْمًا (for) a people ءَاخَرِينَ another ٢٨
Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.
— Come To Light
فَمَا And not بَكَتْ wept عَلَيْهِمُ for them ٱلسَّمَآءُ the heaven وَٱلْأَرْضُ and the earth وَمَا and not كَانُوا۟ they were مُنظَرِينَ given respite ٢٩
And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.
— Come To Light
وَلَقَدْ And certainly نَجَّيْنَا We saved بَنِىٓ (the) Children of Israel إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ (the) Children of Israel مِنَ from ٱلْعَذَابِ the punishment ٱلْمُهِينِ the humiliating ٣٠
And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment -
— Come To Light
مِن From فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ Firaun إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he كَانَ was عَالِيًۭا arrogant مِّنَ among ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ the transgressors ٣١
From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.
— Come To Light
وَلَقَدِ And certainly ٱخْتَرْنَـٰهُمْ We chose them عَلَىٰ by عِلْمٍ knowledge عَلَى over ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ the worlds ٣٢
And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds.
— Come To Light
وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم And We gave them مِّنَ of ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ the Signs مَا that فِيهِ in it بَلَـٰٓؤٌۭا۟ (was) a trial مُّبِينٌ clear ٣٣
And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ these لَيَقُولُونَ surely, they say ٣٤
Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,
— Come To Light
إِنْ Not هِىَ it إِلَّا (is) but مَوْتَتُنَا our death ٱلْأُولَىٰ the first وَمَا and not نَحْنُ we بِمُنشَرِينَ (will be) raised again ٣٥
"There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected.
— Come To Light
فَأْتُوا۟ Then bring بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ our forefathers إِن if كُنتُمْ you are صَـٰدِقِينَ truthful ٣٦
Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."
— Come To Light
أَهُمْ Are they خَيْرٌ better أَمْ or قَوْمُ (the) people تُبَّعٍۢ (of) Tubba وَٱلَّذِينَ and those مِن before them قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ before them أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۖ We destroyed them إِنَّهُمْ indeed, they كَانُوا۟ were مُجْرِمِينَ criminals ٣٧
Are they better or the people of Tubbaʿ and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not خَلَقْنَا We created ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَ and the earth وَمَا and whatever بَيْنَهُمَا (is) between them لَـٰعِبِينَ (in) play ٣٨
And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.
— Come To Light
مَا Not خَلَقْنَـٰهُمَآ We created both of them إِلَّا but بِٱلْحَقِّ in [the] truth وَلَـٰكِنَّ but أَكْثَرَهُمْ most of them لَا (do) not يَعْلَمُونَ know ٣٩
We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed يَوْمَ (the) Day of Judgment ٱلْفَصْلِ (the) Day of Judgment مِيقَـٰتُهُمْ (is) an appointed term for them أَجْمَعِينَ all ٤٠
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all -
— Come To Light
يَوْمَ (The) Day لَا not يُغْنِى will avail مَوْلًى a relation عَن for مَّوْلًۭى a relation شَيْـًۭٔا anything وَلَا and not هُمْ they يُنصَرُونَ will be helped ٤١
The Day when no relation will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped -
— Come To Light
إِلَّا Except مَن (on) whom رَّحِمَ Allah has mercy ٱللَّهُ ۚ Allah has mercy إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, He هُوَ [He] ٱلْعَزِيزُ (is) the All-Mighty ٱلرَّحِيمُ the Most Merciful ٤٢
Except those [believers] on whom Allāh has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed شَجَرَتَ (the) tree ٱلزَّقُّومِ (of) Zaqqum ٤٣
Indeed, the tree of zaqqūm
— Come To Light
طَعَامُ (Will be) food ٱلْأَثِيمِ (of) the sinner(s) ٤٤
Is food for the sinful.
— Come To Light
كَٱلْمُهْلِ Like the murky oil يَغْلِى it will boil فِى in ٱلْبُطُونِ the bellies ٤٥
Like murky oil, it boils within bellies
— Come To Light
كَغَلْىِ Like boiling ٱلْحَمِيمِ (of) scalding water ٤٦
Like the boiling of scalding water.
— Come To Light
خُذُوهُ Seize him فَٱعْتِلُوهُ and drag him إِلَىٰ into سَوَآءِ (the) midst ٱلْجَحِيمِ (of) the Hellfire ٤٧
[It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then صُبُّوا۟ pour فَوْقَ over رَأْسِهِۦ his head مِنْ of عَذَابِ (the) punishment ٱلْحَمِيمِ (of) the scalding water ٤٨
Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water."
— Come To Light
ذُقْ Taste إِنَّكَ Indeed, you أَنتَ [you] (were) ٱلْعَزِيزُ the mighty ٱلْكَرِيمُ the noble ٤٩
[It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed هَـٰذَا this مَا (is) what كُنتُم you used to بِهِۦ [about it] تَمْتَرُونَ doubt ٥٠
Indeed, this is what you used to dispute."
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ the righteous فِى (will be) in مَقَامٍ a place أَمِينٍۢ secure ٥١
Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place:
— Come To Light
فِى In جَنَّـٰتٍۢ gardens وَعُيُونٍۢ and springs ٥٢
Within gardens and springs,
— Come To Light
يَلْبَسُونَ Wearing garments مِن of سُندُسٍۢ fine silk وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍۢ and heavy silk مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ facing each other ٥٣
Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other.
— Come To Light
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus وَزَوَّجْنَـٰهُم And We will marry them بِحُورٍ (to) companions with beautiful eyes عِينٍۢ (to) companions with beautiful eyes ٥٤
Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.
— Come To Light
يَدْعُونَ They will call فِيهَا therein بِكُلِّ for every (kind) فَـٰكِهَةٍ (of) fruit ءَامِنِينَ secure ٥٥
They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit - safe and secure.
— Come To Light
لَا Not يَذُوقُونَ they will taste فِيهَا therein ٱلْمَوْتَ the death إِلَّا except ٱلْمَوْتَةَ the death ٱلْأُولَىٰ ۖ the first وَوَقَىٰهُمْ And He will protect them عَذَابَ (from the) punishment ٱلْجَحِيمِ (of) the Hellfire ٥٦
They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire
— Come To Light
فَضْلًۭا A Bounty مِّن from رَّبِّكَ ۚ your Lord ذَٰلِكَ That هُوَ it ٱلْفَوْزُ (will be) the success ٱلْعَظِيمُ the great ٥٧
As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment.
— Come To Light
فَإِنَّمَا Indeed يَسَّرْنَـٰهُ We have made it easy بِلِسَانِكَ in your tongue لَعَلَّهُمْ so that they may يَتَذَكَّرُونَ take heed ٥٨
And indeed, We have eased it [i.e., the Qur’ān] in your tongue that they might be reminded.
— Come To Light
فَٱرْتَقِبْ So watch إِنَّهُم indeed, they مُّرْتَقِبُونَ (too are) watching ٥٩
So watch, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, they are watching [for your end].
