43. Surah Az-Zukhruf
The Ornaments of Gold · Makki · 89 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ By the Book ٱلْمُبِينِ the clear ٢
By the clear Book,
— Come To Light
إِنَّا Indeed, We جَعَلْنَـٰهُ (have) made it قُرْءَٰنًا a Quran عَرَبِيًّۭا (in) Arabic لَّعَلَّكُمْ so that you may تَعْقِلُونَ understand ٣
Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Qur’ān that you might understand.
— Come To Light
وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it فِىٓ (is) in أُمِّ (the) Mother ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ (of) the Book لَدَيْنَا with Us لَعَلِىٌّ surely exalted حَكِيمٌ full of wisdom ٤
And indeed it is, in the Mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom.
— Come To Light
أَفَنَضْرِبُ Then should We take away عَنكُمُ from you ٱلذِّكْرَ the Reminder صَفْحًا disregarding (you) أَن because كُنتُمْ you are قَوْمًۭا a people مُّسْرِفِينَ transgressing ٥
Then should We turn the message away, disregarding you, because you are a transgressing people?
— Come To Light
وَكَمْ And how many أَرْسَلْنَا We sent مِن of نَّبِىٍّۢ a Prophet فِى among ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ the former (people) ٦
And how many a prophet We sent among the former peoples,
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not يَأْتِيهِم came to them مِّن any Prophet نَّبِىٍّ any Prophet إِلَّا but كَانُوا۟ they used to بِهِۦ mock at him يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ mock at him ٧
But there would not come to them a prophet except that they used to ridicule him.
— Come To Light
فَأَهْلَكْنَآ Then We destroyed أَشَدَّ stronger مِنْهُم than them بَطْشًۭا (in) power وَمَضَىٰ and has passed مَثَلُ (the) example ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ (of) the former (people) ٨
And We destroyed greater than them in [striking] power, and the example of the former peoples has preceded.
— Come To Light
وَلَئِن And if سَأَلْتَهُم you ask them مَّنْ Who خَلَقَ created ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَ and the earth لَيَقُولُنَّ They will surely say خَلَقَهُنَّ Created them ٱلْعَزِيزُ the All-Mighty ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knower ٩
And if you should ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth?" they would surely say, "They were created by the Exalted in Might, the Knowing,"
— Come To Light
ٱلَّذِى The One Who جَعَلَ made لَكُمُ for you ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth مَهْدًۭا a bed وَجَعَلَ and made لَكُمْ for you فِيهَا therein سُبُلًۭا roads لَّعَلَّكُمْ so that you may تَهْتَدُونَ (be) guided ١٠
[The one] who has made for you the earth a bed and made for you upon it roads that you might be guided
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِى And the One Who نَزَّلَ sends down مِنَ from ٱلسَّمَآءِ the sky مَآءًۢ water بِقَدَرٍۢ in (due) measure فَأَنشَرْنَا then We revive بِهِۦ with it بَلْدَةًۭ a land مَّيْتًۭا ۚ dead كَذَٰلِكَ thus تُخْرَجُونَ you will be brought forth ١١
And who sends down rain from the sky in measured amounts, and We revive thereby a dead land - thus will you be brought forth -
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّذِى And the One Who خَلَقَ created ٱلْأَزْوَٰجَ the pairs كُلَّهَا all of them وَجَعَلَ and made لَكُم for you مِّنَ [of] ٱلْفُلْكِ the ships وَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ and the cattle مَا what تَرْكَبُونَ you ride ١٢
And who created the species, all of them, and has made for you of ships and animals those which you mount
— Come To Light
لِتَسْتَوُۥا۟ That you may sit firmly عَلَىٰ on ظُهُورِهِۦ their backs ثُمَّ then تَذْكُرُوا۟ remember نِعْمَةَ (the) favor رَبِّكُمْ (of) your Lord إِذَا when ٱسْتَوَيْتُمْ you sit firmly عَلَيْهِ on them وَتَقُولُوا۟ and say سُبْحَـٰنَ Glory be (to) ٱلَّذِى the One Who سَخَّرَ (has) subjected لَنَا to us هَـٰذَا this وَمَا and not كُنَّا we were لَهُۥ of it مُقْرِنِينَ capable ١٣
That you may settle yourselves upon their backs and then remember the favor of your Lord when you have settled upon them and say, "Exalted is He who has subjected this to us, and we could not have [otherwise] subdued it.
— Come To Light
وَإِنَّآ And indeed, we إِلَىٰ to رَبِّنَا our Lord لَمُنقَلِبُونَ will surely return ١٤
And indeed we, to our Lord, will [surely] return."
— Come To Light
وَجَعَلُوا۟ But they attribute لَهُۥ to Him مِنْ from عِبَادِهِۦ His slaves جُزْءًا ۚ a portion إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ man لَكَفُورٌۭ surely (is) clearly ungrateful مُّبِينٌ surely (is) clearly ungrateful ١٥
But they have attributed to Him from His servants a portion. Indeed, man is clearly ungrateful.
— Come To Light
أَمِ Or ٱتَّخَذَ has He taken مِمَّا of what يَخْلُقُ He has created بَنَاتٍۢ daughters وَأَصْفَىٰكُم and He has chosen (for) you بِٱلْبَنِينَ sons ١٦
Or has He taken, out of what He has created, daughters and chosen you for [having] sons?
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when بُشِّرَ is given good news أَحَدُهُم (to) one of them بِمَا of what ضَرَبَ he sets up لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ for the Most Gracious مَثَلًۭا (as) a likeness ظَلَّ becomes وَجْهُهُۥ his face مُسْوَدًّۭا dark وَهُوَ and he كَظِيمٌ (is) filled with grief ١٧
And when one of them is given good tidings of that which he attributes to the Most Merciful in comparison [i.e., a daughter], his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief.
— Come To Light
أَوَمَن Then (is one) who يُنَشَّؤُا۟ is brought up فِى in ٱلْحِلْيَةِ ornaments وَهُوَ and he فِى in ٱلْخِصَامِ the dispute غَيْرُ (is) not مُبِينٍۢ clear ١٨
So is one brought up in ornaments while being during conflict unevident [attributed to Allāh]?
— Come To Light
وَجَعَلُوا۟ And they made ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ the Angels ٱلَّذِينَ those who هُمْ themselves عِبَـٰدُ (are) slaves ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ (of) the Most Gracious إِنَـٰثًا ۚ females أَشَهِدُوا۟ Did they witness خَلْقَهُمْ ۚ their creation سَتُكْتَبُ Will be recorded شَهَـٰدَتُهُمْ their testimony وَيُسْـَٔلُونَ and they will be questioned ١٩
And they described the angels, who are servants of the Most Merciful, as females. Did they witness their creation? Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.
— Come To Light
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say لَوْ If شَآءَ had willed ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ the Most Gracious مَا we would not have worshipped them عَبَدْنَـٰهُم ۗ we would not have worshipped them مَّا Not لَهُم they have بِذَٰلِكَ about that مِنْ any عِلْمٍ ۖ knowledge إِنْ Nothing هُمْ they (do) إِلَّا but يَخْرُصُونَ lie ٢٠
And they said, "If the Most Merciful had willed, we would not have worshipped them." They have of that no knowledge. They are not but misjudging.
