Surah Fussilat
Verse 1–46
تَنزِيلٌۭ A revelation مِّنَ from ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful ٢
[This is] a revelation from the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful -
— Come To Light
كِتَـٰبٌۭ A Book فُصِّلَتْ are detailed ءَايَـٰتُهُۥ its Verses قُرْءَانًا a Quran عَرَبِيًّۭا (in) Arabic لِّقَوْمٍۢ for a people يَعْلَمُونَ (who) know ٣
A Book whose verses have been detailed, an Arabic Qur’ān for a people who know,
— Come To Light
بَشِيرًۭا A giver of glad tidings وَنَذِيرًۭا and a warner فَأَعْرَضَ but turn away أَكْثَرُهُمْ most of them فَهُمْ so they لَا (do) not يَسْمَعُونَ hear ٤
As a giver of good tidings and a warner; but most of them turn away, so they do not hear.
— Come To Light
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say قُلُوبُنَا Our hearts فِىٓ (are) in أَكِنَّةٍۢ coverings مِّمَّا from what تَدْعُونَآ you call us إِلَيْهِ to it وَفِىٓ and in ءَاذَانِنَا our ears وَقْرٌۭ (is) deafness وَمِنۢ and between us بَيْنِنَا and between us وَبَيْنِكَ and between you حِجَابٌۭ (is) a screen فَٱعْمَلْ So work إِنَّنَا indeed, we عَـٰمِلُونَ (are) working ٥
And they say, "Our hearts are within coverings [i.e., screened] from that to which you invite us, and in our ears is deafness, and between us and you is a partition, so work; indeed, we are working."
— Come To Light
قُلْ Say إِنَّمَآ Only أَنَا۠ I am بَشَرٌۭ a man مِّثْلُكُمْ like you يُوحَىٰٓ it is revealed إِلَىَّ to me أَنَّمَآ that إِلَـٰهُكُمْ your god إِلَـٰهٌۭ (is) God وَٰحِدٌۭ One فَٱسْتَقِيمُوٓا۟ so take a Straight Path إِلَيْهِ to Him وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوهُ ۗ and ask His forgiveness وَوَيْلٌۭ And woe لِّلْمُشْرِكِينَ to the polytheists ٦
Say, [O Muḥammad], "I am only a man like you to whom it has been revealed that your god is but one God; so take a straight course to Him and seek His forgiveness." And woe to those who associate others with Allāh
— Come To Light
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who لَا (do) not يُؤْتُونَ give ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ the zakah وَهُم and they بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ in the Hereafter هُمْ they كَـٰفِرُونَ (are) disbelievers ٧
Those who do not give zakāh, and in the Hereafter they are disbelievers.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believe وَعَمِلُوا۟ and do ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ righteous deeds لَهُمْ for them أَجْرٌ (is) a reward غَيْرُ never ending مَمْنُونٍۢ never ending ٨
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds - for them is a reward uninterrupted.
— Come To Light
۞ قُلْ Say أَئِنَّكُمْ Do you indeed لَتَكْفُرُونَ [surely] disbelieve بِٱلَّذِى in the One Who خَلَقَ created ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth فِى in يَوْمَيْنِ two periods وَتَجْعَلُونَ and you set up لَهُۥٓ with Him أَندَادًۭا ۚ rivals ذَٰلِكَ That رَبُّ (is the) Lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds ٩
Say, "Do you indeed disbelieve in He who created the earth in two days and attribute to Him equals? That is the Lord of the worlds."
— Come To Light
وَجَعَلَ And He placed فِيهَا therein رَوَٰسِىَ firmly-set mountains مِن above it فَوْقِهَا above it وَبَـٰرَكَ and He blessed فِيهَا therein وَقَدَّرَ and determined فِيهَآ therein أَقْوَٰتَهَا its sustenance فِىٓ in أَرْبَعَةِ four أَيَّامٍۢ periods سَوَآءًۭ equal لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ for those who ask ١٠
And He placed on it [i.e., the earth] firmly set mountains over its surface, and He blessed it and determined therein its [creatures'] sustenance in four days without distinction - for [the information of] those who ask.
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then ٱسْتَوَىٰٓ He directed (Himself) إِلَى towards ٱلسَّمَآءِ the heaven وَهِىَ while it (was) دُخَانٌۭ smoke فَقَالَ and He said لَهَا to it وَلِلْأَرْضِ and to the earth ٱئْتِيَا Come both of you طَوْعًا willingly أَوْ or كَرْهًۭا unwillingly قَالَتَآ They both said أَتَيْنَا We come طَآئِعِينَ willingly ١١
Then He directed Himself to the heaven while it was smoke and said to it and to the earth, "Come [into being], willingly or by compulsion." They said, "We have come willingly."
— Come To Light
فَقَضَىٰهُنَّ Then He completed them سَبْعَ (as) seven سَمَـٰوَاتٍۢ heavens فِى in يَوْمَيْنِ two periods وَأَوْحَىٰ and He revealed فِى in كُلِّ each سَمَآءٍ heaven أَمْرَهَا ۚ its affair وَزَيَّنَّا And We adorned ٱلسَّمَآءَ the heaven ٱلدُّنْيَا [the world] بِمَصَـٰبِيحَ with lamps وَحِفْظًۭا ۚ and (to) guard ذَٰلِكَ That تَقْدِيرُ (is the) Decree ٱلْعَزِيزِ (of) the All-Mighty ٱلْعَلِيمِ the All-Knower ١٢
And He completed them as seven heavens within two days and inspired [i.e., made known] in each heaven its command. And We adorned the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars, for beauty] and as protection. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
— Come To Light
فَإِنْ But if أَعْرَضُوا۟ they turn away فَقُلْ then say أَنذَرْتُكُمْ I have warned you صَـٰعِقَةًۭ (of) a thunderbolt مِّثْلَ like صَـٰعِقَةِ (the) thunderbolt عَادٍۢ (of) Aad وَثَمُودَ and Thamud ١٣
But if they turn away, then say, "I have warned you of a thunderbolt like the thunderbolt [that struck] ʿAad and Thamūd.
— Come To Light
إِذْ When جَآءَتْهُمُ came to them ٱلرُّسُلُ the Messengers مِنۢ from before them بَيْنِ from before them أَيْدِيهِمْ from before them وَمِنْ and from خَلْفِهِمْ behind them أَلَّا (saying) "Do not تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ worship إِلَّا except ٱللَّهَ ۖ Allah قَالُوا۟ They said لَوْ If شَآءَ (had) willed رَبُّنَا our Lord لَأَنزَلَ surely, He (would have) sent down مَلَـٰٓئِكَةًۭ Angels فَإِنَّا So indeed, we بِمَآ in what أُرْسِلْتُم you have been sent بِهِۦ with كَـٰفِرُونَ (are) disbelievers ١٤
[That occurred] when the messengers had come to them before them and after them, [saying], "Worship not except Allāh." They said, "If our Lord had willed, He would have sent down the angels, so indeed we, in that with which you have been sent, are disbelievers."
— Come To Light
فَأَمَّا Then as for عَادٌۭ Aad فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ they were arrogant فِى in ٱلْأَرْضِ the land بِغَيْرِ without ٱلْحَقِّ [the] right وَقَالُوا۟ and they said مَنْ Who أَشَدُّ (is) mightier مِنَّا than us قُوَّةً ۖ (in) strength أَوَلَمْ Do not يَرَوْا۟ they see أَنَّ that ٱللَّهَ Allah ٱلَّذِى the One Who خَلَقَهُمْ created them هُوَ He أَشَدُّ (is) Mightier مِنْهُمْ than them قُوَّةًۭ ۖ (in) strength وَكَانُوا۟ But they used to بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا in Our Signs يَجْحَدُونَ deny ١٥
As for ʿAad, they were arrogant upon the earth without right and said, "Who is greater than us in strength?" Did they not consider that Allāh who created them was greater than them in strength? But they were rejecting Our signs.
— Come To Light
فَأَرْسَلْنَا So We sent عَلَيْهِمْ upon them رِيحًۭا a wind صَرْصَرًۭا furious فِىٓ in أَيَّامٍۢ (the) days نَّحِسَاتٍۢ (of) misfortune لِّنُذِيقَهُمْ that We may make them taste عَذَابَ (the) punishment ٱلْخِزْىِ (of) disgrace فِى in ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ the life ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ (of) the world وَلَعَذَابُ And surely, (the) punishment ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ (of) the Hereafter أَخْزَىٰ ۖ (is) more disgracing وَهُمْ and they لَا will not be helped يُنصَرُونَ will not be helped ١٦
So We sent upon them a screaming wind during days of misfortune to make them taste the punishment of disgrace in the worldly life; but the punishment of the Hereafter is more disgracing, and they will not be helped.
— Come To Light
وَأَمَّا And as for ثَمُودُ Thamud فَهَدَيْنَـٰهُمْ We guided them فَٱسْتَحَبُّوا۟ but they preferred ٱلْعَمَىٰ [the] blindness عَلَى over ٱلْهُدَىٰ the guidance فَأَخَذَتْهُمْ so seized them صَـٰعِقَةُ a thunderbolt ٱلْعَذَابِ (of) the punishment ٱلْهُونِ humiliating بِمَا for what كَانُوا۟ they used to يَكْسِبُونَ earn ١٧
And as for Thamūd, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderbolt of humiliating punishment seized them for what they used to earn.
— Come To Light
وَنَجَّيْنَا And We saved ٱلَّذِينَ those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believed وَكَانُوا۟ and used to يَتَّقُونَ fear (Allah) ١٨
And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allāh.
— Come To Light
وَيَوْمَ And (the) Day يُحْشَرُ will be gathered أَعْدَآءُ (the) enemies ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah إِلَى to ٱلنَّارِ the Fire فَهُمْ then they يُوزَعُونَ will be assembled in rows ١٩
And [mention, O Muḥammad], the Day when the enemies of Allāh will be gathered to the Fire while they are [driven], assembled in rows,
— Come To Light
حَتَّىٰٓ Until إِذَا when مَا when جَآءُوهَا they come to it شَهِدَ (will) testify عَلَيْهِمْ against them سَمْعُهُمْ their hearing وَأَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ and their sight وَجُلُودُهُم and their skins بِمَا (as) to what كَانُوا۟ they used to يَعْمَلُونَ do ٢٠
Until, when they reach it, their hearing and their eyes and their skins will testify against them of what they used to do.
