أَوْ Or كَظُلُمَـٰتٍۢ (is) like (the) darkness[es] فِى in بَحْرٍۢ a sea لُّجِّىٍّۢ deep يَغْشَىٰهُ covers it مَوْجٌۭ a wave مِّن on it فَوْقِهِۦ on it مَوْجٌۭ a wave مِّن on it فَوْقِهِۦ on it سَحَابٌۭ ۚ a cloud ظُلُمَـٰتٌۢ darkness[es] بَعْضُهَا some of it فَوْقَ on بَعْضٍ others إِذَآ When أَخْرَجَ he puts out يَدَهُۥ his hand لَمْ hardly يَكَدْ hardly يَرَىٰهَا ۗ he (can) see it وَمَن And (for) whom لَّمْ not يَجْعَلِ Allah (has) made ٱللَّهُ Allah (has) made لَهُۥ for him نُورًۭا a light فَمَا then not لَهُۥ for him مِن (is) any نُّورٍ light ٤٠
Or [they are] like darknesses within an unfathomable sea which is covered by waves, upon which are waves, over which are clouds - darknesses, some of them upon others. When one puts out his hand [therein], he can hardly see it. And he to whom Allāh has not granted light - for him there is no light.
