Surah Al-Baqarah
Verse 121–141

ٱلَّذِينَ Those ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمُ We have given them ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Book يَتْلُونَهُۥ recite it حَقَّ (as it has the) right تِلَاوَتِهِۦٓ (of) its recitation أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those (people) يُؤْمِنُونَ believe بِهِۦ ۗ in it وَمَن And whoever يَكْفُرْ disbelieves بِهِۦ in it فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ then those هُمُ they ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ (are) the losers ١٢١

Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital. They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it - it is they who are the losers.

— Come To Light

يَـٰبَنِىٓ O Children إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ (of) Israel ٱذْكُرُوا۟ Remember نِعْمَتِىَ My Favor ٱلَّتِىٓ which أَنْعَمْتُ I bestowed عَلَيْكُمْ upon you وَأَنِّى and that I فَضَّلْتُكُمْ [I] preferred you عَلَى over ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ the worlds ١٢٢

O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds.

— Come To Light

وَٱتَّقُوا۟ And fear يَوْمًۭا a day لَّا not تَجْزِى will avail نَفْسٌ a soul عَن (of) نَّفْسٍۢ (another) soul شَيْـًۭٔا anything وَلَا and not يُقْبَلُ will be accepted مِنْهَا from it عَدْلٌۭ any compensation وَلَا and not تَنفَعُهَا will benefit it شَفَـٰعَةٌۭ any intercession وَلَا and not هُمْ they يُنصَرُونَ will be helped ١٢٣

And fear a Day when no soul will suffice for another soul at all, and no compensation will be accepted from it, nor will any intercession benefit it, nor will they be aided.

— Come To Light

۞ وَإِذِ And when ٱبْتَلَىٰٓ tried إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ Ibrahim رَبُّهُۥ his Lord بِكَلِمَـٰتٍۢ with words فَأَتَمَّهُنَّ ۖ and he fulfilled them قَالَ He said إِنِّى Indeed I جَاعِلُكَ (am) the One to make you لِلنَّاسِ for the mankind إِمَامًۭا ۖ a leader قَالَ He said وَمِن And from ذُرِّيَّتِى ۖ my offspring قَالَ He said لَا (Does) not يَنَالُ reach عَهْدِى My Covenant ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ (to) the wrongdoers ١٢٤

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham was tried by his Lord with words [i.e., commands] and he fulfilled them. [Allāh] said, "Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people." [Abraham] said, "And of my descendants?" [Allāh] said, "My covenant does not include the wrongdoers."

— Come To Light

وَإِذْ And when جَعَلْنَا We made ٱلْبَيْتَ the House مَثَابَةًۭ a place of return لِّلنَّاسِ for mankind وَأَمْنًۭا and (a place of) security وَٱتَّخِذُوا۟ and (said), "Take مِن [from] مَّقَامِ (the) standing place إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ (of) Ibrahim مُصَلًّۭى ۖ (as) a place of prayer وَعَهِدْنَآ And We made a covenant إِلَىٰٓ with إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ Ibrahim وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ and Ishmael أَن [that] طَهِّرَا [You both] purify بَيْتِىَ My House لِلطَّآئِفِينَ for those who circumambulate وَٱلْعَـٰكِفِينَ and those who seclude themselves for devotion and prayer وَٱلرُّكَّعِ and those who bow down ٱلسُّجُودِ and those who prostrate ١٢٥

And [mention] when We made the House [i.e., the Kaʿbah] a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], "Purify My House for those who perform ṭawāf and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer]."

— Come To Light

وَإِذْ And when قَالَ said إِبْرَٰهِـۧمُ Ibrahim رَبِّ My Lord ٱجْعَلْ make هَـٰذَا this بَلَدًا a city ءَامِنًۭا secure وَٱرْزُقْ and provide أَهْلَهُۥ its people مِنَ with ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ fruits مَنْ (to) whoever ءَامَنَ believed مِنْهُم from them بِٱللَّهِ in Allah وَٱلْيَوْمِ and the Day ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ ۖ the Last قَالَ He said وَمَن And whoever كَفَرَ disbelieved فَأُمَتِّعُهُۥ [then] I will grant him enjoyment قَلِيلًۭا a little ثُمَّ then أَضْطَرُّهُۥٓ I will force him إِلَىٰ to عَذَابِ (the) punishment ٱلنَّارِ ۖ (of) the Fire وَبِئْسَ and evil ٱلْمَصِيرُ (is) the destination ١٢٦

And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits - whoever of them believes in Allāh and the Last Day." [Allāh] said, "And whoever disbelieves - I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination."

— Come To Light

وَإِذْ And when يَرْفَعُ (was) raising إِبْرَٰهِـۧمُ Ibrahim ٱلْقَوَاعِدَ the foundations مِنَ of ٱلْبَيْتِ the House وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلُ and Ishmael رَبَّنَا (saying), "Our Lord تَقَبَّلْ Accept مِنَّآ ۖ from us إِنَّكَ Indeed You أَنتَ [You] (are) ٱلسَّمِيعُ the All-Hearing ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knowing ١٢٧

And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.

— Come To Light

رَبَّنَا Our Lord وَٱجْعَلْنَا [and] Make us مُسْلِمَيْنِ both submissive لَكَ to You وَمِن And from ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ our offspring أُمَّةًۭ a community مُّسْلِمَةًۭ submissive لَّكَ to You وَأَرِنَا And show us مَنَاسِكَنَا our ways of worship وَتُبْ and turn عَلَيْنَآ ۖ to us إِنَّكَ Indeed You أَنتَ [You] (are) ٱلتَّوَّابُ the Oft-returning ٱلرَّحِيمُ the Most Merciful ١٢٨

Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites [of worship] and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.

— Come To Light

رَبَّنَا Our Lord وَٱبْعَثْ [And] raise up فِيهِمْ in them رَسُولًۭا a Messenger مِّنْهُمْ from them يَتْلُوا۟ (who) will recite عَلَيْهِمْ to them ءَايَـٰتِكَ Your Verses وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ and will teach them ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ the Book وَٱلْحِكْمَةَ and the wisdom وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ ۚ and purify them إِنَّكَ Indeed You أَنتَ You (are) ٱلْعَزِيزُ the All-Mighty ٱلْحَكِيمُ the All-Wise ١٢٩

Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

— Come To Light

وَمَن And who يَرْغَبُ will turn away عَن from مِّلَّةِ (the) religion إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ (of) Ibrahim إِلَّا except مَن who سَفِهَ fooled نَفْسَهُۥ ۚ himself وَلَقَدِ And indeed ٱصْطَفَيْنَـٰهُ We chose him فِى in ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ the world وَإِنَّهُۥ and indeed he فِى in ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ the Hereafter لَمِنَ surely (will be) among ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ the righteous ١٣٠

And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself. And We had chosen him in this world, and indeed he, in the Hereafter, will be among the righteous.

— Come To Light

إِذْ When قَالَ said لَهُۥ to him رَبُّهُۥٓ his Lord أَسْلِمْ ۖ Submit (yourself) قَالَ he said أَسْلَمْتُ I (have) submitted (myself) لِرَبِّ to (the) Lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds ١٣١

When his Lord said to him, "Submit," he said, "I have submitted [in Islām] to the Lord of the worlds."

— Come To Light

وَوَصَّىٰ And enjoined بِهَآ [it] إِبْرَٰهِـۧمُ Ibrahim بَنِيهِ (upon) his sons وَيَعْقُوبُ and Yaqub يَـٰبَنِىَّ O my sons إِنَّ Indeed ٱللَّهَ Allah ٱصْطَفَىٰ has chosen لَكُمُ for you ٱلدِّينَ the religion فَلَا so not تَمُوتُنَّ (should) you die إِلَّا except وَأَنتُم while you مُّسْلِمُونَ (are) submissive ١٣٢

And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob, [saying], "O my sons, indeed Allāh has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims."

— Come To Light

أَمْ Or كُنتُمْ were you شُهَدَآءَ witnesses إِذْ when حَضَرَ came to يَعْقُوبَ Yaqub ٱلْمَوْتُ [the] death إِذْ when قَالَ he said لِبَنِيهِ to his sons مَا What تَعْبُدُونَ will you worship مِنۢ from بَعْدِى after me قَالُوا۟ They said نَعْبُدُ We will worship إِلَـٰهَكَ your God وَإِلَـٰهَ and (the) God ءَابَآئِكَ (of) your forefathers إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ Ibrahim وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ and Ishmael وَإِسْحَـٰقَ and Isaac إِلَـٰهًۭا God وَٰحِدًۭا One وَنَحْنُ And we لَهُۥ to Him مُسْلِمُونَ (are) submissive ١٣٣

Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac - one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

— Come To Light

تِلْكَ This أُمَّةٌۭ (was) a community قَدْ (which) خَلَتْ ۖ has passed away لَهَا for it مَا what كَسَبَتْ it earned وَلَكُم and for you مَّا what كَسَبْتُمْ ۖ you have earned وَلَا And not تُسْـَٔلُونَ you will be asked عَمَّا about what كَانُوا۟ they used to يَعْمَلُونَ do ١٣٤

That was a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.

— Come To Light

وَقَالُوا۟ And they said كُونُوا۟ Be هُودًا Jews أَوْ or نَصَـٰرَىٰ Christians تَهْتَدُوا۟ ۗ (then) you will be guided قُلْ Say بَلْ Nay مِلَّةَ (the) religion إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ (of) Ibrahim حَنِيفًۭا ۖ (the) upright وَمَا and not كَانَ he was مِنَ of ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ those who associated partners (with Allah) ١٣٥

They say, "Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided." Say, "Rather, [we follow] the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists."

— Come To Light

قُولُوٓا۟ Say ءَامَنَّا We have believed بِٱللَّهِ in Allah وَمَآ and what أُنزِلَ (is) revealed إِلَيْنَا to us وَمَآ and what أُنزِلَ was revealed إِلَىٰٓ to إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ Ibrahim وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ and Ishmael وَإِسْحَـٰقَ and Isaac وَيَعْقُوبَ and Yaqub وَٱلْأَسْبَاطِ and the descendants وَمَآ and what أُوتِىَ was given مُوسَىٰ (to) Musa وَعِيسَىٰ and Isa وَمَآ and what أُوتِىَ was given ٱلنَّبِيُّونَ (to) the Prophets مِن from رَّبِّهِمْ their Lord لَا Not نُفَرِّقُ we make distinction بَيْنَ between أَحَدٍۢ any مِّنْهُمْ of them وَنَحْنُ And we لَهُۥ to Him مُسْلِمُونَ (are) submissive ١٣٦

Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allāh and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants [al-Asbāṭ] and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."

— Come To Light

فَإِنْ So if ءَامَنُوا۟ they believe[d] بِمِثْلِ in (the) like مَآ (of) what ءَامَنتُم you have believed بِهِۦ in [it] فَقَدِ then indeed ٱهْتَدَوا۟ ۖ they are (rightly) guided وَّإِن But if تَوَلَّوْا۟ they turn away فَإِنَّمَا then only هُمْ they فِى (are) in شِقَاقٍۢ ۖ dissension فَسَيَكْفِيكَهُمُ So will suffice you against them ٱللَّهُ ۚ Allah وَهُوَ and He ٱلسَّمِيعُ (is) the All-Hearing ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knowing ١٣٧

So if they believe in the same as you believe in, then they have been [rightly] guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension, and Allāh will be sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

— Come To Light

صِبْغَةَ (The) color (religion) ٱللَّهِ ۖ (of) Allah وَمَنْ And who أَحْسَنُ (is) better مِنَ than ٱللَّهِ Allah صِبْغَةًۭ ۖ at coloring وَنَحْنُ And we لَهُۥ to Him عَـٰبِدُونَ (are) worshippers ١٣٨

[And say, "Ours is] the religion of Allāh. And who is better than Allāh in [ordaining] religion? And we are worshippers of Him."

— Come To Light

قُلْ Say أَتُحَآجُّونَنَا Do you argue with us فِى about ٱللَّهِ Allah وَهُوَ while He رَبُّنَا (is) our Lord وَرَبُّكُمْ and your Lord وَلَنَآ And for us أَعْمَـٰلُنَا (are) our deeds وَلَكُمْ and for you أَعْمَـٰلُكُمْ (are) your deeds وَنَحْنُ and we لَهُۥ to Him مُخْلِصُونَ (are) sincere ١٣٩

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Do you argue with us about Allāh while He is our Lord and your Lord? For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. And we are sincere [in deed and intention] to Him."

— Come To Light

أَمْ Or تَقُولُونَ (do) you say إِنَّ that إِبْرَٰهِـۧمَ Ibrahim وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ and Ishmael وَإِسْحَـٰقَ and Isaac وَيَعْقُوبَ and Yaqub وَٱلْأَسْبَاطَ and the descendants كَانُوا۟ were هُودًا Jews أَوْ or نَصَـٰرَىٰ ۗ Christians قُلْ Say ءَأَنتُمْ Are you أَعْلَمُ better knowing أَمِ or ٱللَّهُ ۗ (is) Allah وَمَنْ And who أَظْلَمُ (is) more unjust مِمَّن than (the one) who كَتَمَ concealed شَهَـٰدَةً a testimony عِندَهُۥ (that) he has مِنَ from ٱللَّهِ ۗ Allah وَمَا And not ٱللَّهُ (is) Allah بِغَـٰفِلٍ unaware عَمَّا of what تَعْمَلُونَ you do ١٤٠

Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allāh?" And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allāh? And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
