إِذَا When ٱلشَّمْسُ the sun كُوِّرَتْ is wrapped up ١
When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness]
— Come To Light
81. Surah At-Takwir
The Overthrowing · Makki · 29 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
وَإِذَا And when ٱلنُّجُومُ the stars ٱنكَدَرَتْ fall, losing their luster ٢
And when the stars fall, dispersing,
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلْجِبَالُ the mountains سُيِّرَتْ are moved away ٣
And when the mountains are removed
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلْعِشَارُ the full-term she-camels عُطِّلَتْ (are) left untended ٤
And when full-term she-camels are neglected
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلْوُحُوشُ the wild beasts حُشِرَتْ are gathered ٥
And when the wild beasts are gathered
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلْبِحَارُ the seas سُجِّرَتْ are made to overflow ٦
And when the seas are filled with flame
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلنُّفُوسُ the souls زُوِّجَتْ are paired ٧
And when the souls are paired
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلْمَوْءُۥدَةُ the female infant buried alive سُئِلَتْ is asked ٨
And when the girl [who was] buried alive is asked
— Come To Light
بِأَىِّ For what ذَنۢبٍۢ sin قُتِلَتْ she was killed ٩
For what sin she was killed
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلصُّحُفُ the pages نُشِرَتْ are laid open ١٠
And when the pages are spread [i.e., made public]
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلسَّمَآءُ the sky كُشِطَتْ is stripped away ١١
And when the sky is stripped away
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلْجَحِيمُ the Hellfire سُعِّرَتْ is set ablaze ١٢
And when Hellfire is set ablaze
— Come To Light
وَإِذَا And when ٱلْجَنَّةُ Paradise أُزْلِفَتْ is brought near ١٣
And when Paradise is brought near,
— Come To Light
عَلِمَتْ Will know نَفْسٌۭ a soul مَّآ what أَحْضَرَتْ it has brought ١٤
A soul will [then] know what it has brought [with it].
— Come To Light
فَلَآ But nay أُقْسِمُ I swear بِٱلْخُنَّسِ by the retreating planets ١٥
So I swear by the retreating stars -
— Come To Light
ٱلْجَوَارِ Those that run ٱلْكُنَّسِ (and) disappear ١٦
Those that run [their courses] and disappear [i.e., set]
— Come To Light
وَٱلَّيْلِ And the night إِذَا when عَسْعَسَ it departs ١٧
And by the night as it closes in
— Come To Light
وَٱلصُّبْحِ And the dawn إِذَا when تَنَفَّسَ it breathes ١٨
And by the dawn when it breathes [i.e., stirs]
— Come To Light
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it لَقَوْلُ (is) surely a word رَسُولٍۢ (of) a Messenger كَرِيمٍۢ noble ١٩
[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger [i.e., Gabriel]
— Come To Light
ذِى Possessor of قُوَّةٍ power عِندَ with ذِى (the) Owner of ٱلْعَرْشِ the Throne مَكِينٍۢ secure ٢٠
[Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position],
— Come To Light
مُّطَاعٍۢ One to be obeyed ثَمَّ and أَمِينٍۢ trustworthy ٢١
Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not صَاحِبُكُم (is) your companion بِمَجْنُونٍۢ mad ٢٢
And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.
— Come To Light
وَلَقَدْ And certainly رَءَاهُ he saw him بِٱلْأُفُقِ in the horizon ٱلْمُبِينِ the clear ٢٣
And he has already seen him [i.e., Gabriel] in the clear horizon.
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not هُوَ he (is) عَلَى on ٱلْغَيْبِ the unseen بِضَنِينٍۢ a withholder ٢٤
And he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] is not a withholder of [knowledge of] the unseen.
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not هُوَ it بِقَوْلِ (is the) word شَيْطَـٰنٍۢ (of) Shaitaan رَّجِيمٍۢ accursed ٢٥
And it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is not the word of a devil, expelled [from the heavens].
— Come To Light
فَأَيْنَ So where تَذْهَبُونَ are you going ٢٦
So where are you going?
— Come To Light
إِنْ Not هُوَ it إِلَّا (is) except ذِكْرٌۭ a reminder لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ to the worlds ٢٧
It is not except a reminder to the worlds
— Come To Light
لِمَن For whoever شَآءَ wills مِنكُمْ among you أَن to يَسْتَقِيمَ take a straight way ٢٨
For whoever wills among you to take a right course.
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not تَشَآءُونَ you will إِلَّآ except أَن that يَشَآءَ wills ٱللَّهُ Allah رَبُّ Lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds ٢٩
And you do not will except that Allāh wills - Lord of the worlds.
