عَبَسَ He frowned وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ and turned away ١
He [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ) ] frowned and turned away
— Come To Light
80. Surah 'Abasa
He Frowned · Makki · 42 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
أَن Because جَآءَهُ came to him ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ the blind man ٢
Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting].
— Come To Light
وَمَا But what يُدْرِيكَ would make you know لَعَلَّهُۥ that he might يَزَّكَّىٰٓ purify himself ٣
But what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified
— Come To Light
أَوْ Or يَذَّكَّرُ be reminded فَتَنفَعَهُ so would benefit him ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ the reminder ٤
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
— Come To Light
أَمَّا As for مَنِ (him) who ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ considers himself free from need ٥
As for he who thinks himself without need,
— Come To Light
فَأَنتَ So you لَهُۥ to him تَصَدَّىٰ give attention ٦
To him you give attention.
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not عَلَيْكَ upon you أَلَّا that not يَزَّكَّىٰ he purifies himself ٧
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.
— Come To Light
وَأَمَّا But as for مَن (he) who جَآءَكَ came to you يَسْعَىٰ striving ٨
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
— Come To Light
وَهُوَ While he يَخْشَىٰ fears ٩
While he fears [Allāh],
— Come To Light
فَأَنتَ But you عَنْهُ from him تَلَهَّىٰ (are) distracted ١٠
From him you are distracted.
— Come To Light
كَلَّآ Nay إِنَّهَا Indeed, it تَذْكِرَةٌۭ (is) a reminder ١١
No! Indeed, they [i.e., these verses] are a reminder;
— Come To Light
فَمَن So whosoever شَآءَ wills ذَكَرَهُۥ may remember it ١٢
So whoever wills may remember it.
— Come To Light
فِى In صُحُفٍۢ sheets مُّكَرَّمَةٍۢ honored ١٣
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,
— Come To Light
مَّرْفُوعَةٍۢ Exalted مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ purified ١٤
Exalted and purified,
— Come To Light
بِأَيْدِى In (the) hands سَفَرَةٍۢ (of) scribes ١٥
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
— Come To Light
كِرَامٍۭ Noble بَرَرَةٍۢ dutiful ١٦
Noble and dutiful.
— Come To Light
قُتِلَ Is destroyed ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ [the] man مَآ how أَكْفَرَهُۥ ungrateful is he ١٧
Destroyed [i.e., cursed] is man; how disbelieving is he.
— Come To Light
مِنْ From أَىِّ what شَىْءٍ thing خَلَقَهُۥ He created him ١٨
From what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?
— Come To Light
مِن From نُّطْفَةٍ a semen-drop خَلَقَهُۥ He created him فَقَدَّرَهُۥ then He proportioned him ١٩
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then ٱلسَّبِيلَ the way يَسَّرَهُۥ He made easy for him ٢٠
Then He eased the way for him;
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then أَمَاتَهُۥ He causes him to die فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ and provides a grave for him ٢١
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then إِذَا when شَآءَ He wills أَنشَرَهُۥ He will resurrect him ٢٢
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
— Come To Light
كَلَّا Nay لَمَّا Not يَقْضِ he has accomplished مَآ what أَمَرَهُۥ He commanded him ٢٣
No! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
— Come To Light
فَلْيَنظُرِ Then let look ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ the man إِلَىٰ at طَعَامِهِۦٓ his food ٢٤
Then let mankind look at his food -
— Come To Light
اَنَّا That [We] صَبَبْنَا [We] poured ٱلْمَآءَ the water صَبًّۭا (in) abundance ٢٥
How We poured down water in torrents,
— Come To Light
ثُمَّ Then شَقَقْنَا We cleaved ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth شَقًّۭا splitting ٢٦
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
— Come To Light
فَأَنۢبَتْنَا Then We caused to grow فِيهَا therein حَبًّۭا grain ٢٧
And caused to grow within it grain
— Come To Light
وَعِنَبًۭا And grapes وَقَضْبًۭا and green fodder ٢٨
And grapes and herbage
— Come To Light
وَزَيْتُونًۭا And olive وَنَخْلًۭا and date-palms ٢٩
And olive and palm trees
— Come To Light
وَحَدَآئِقَ And gardens غُلْبًۭا (of) thick foliage ٣٠
And gardens of dense shrubbery
— Come To Light
وَفَـٰكِهَةًۭ And fruits وَأَبًّۭا and grass ٣١
And fruit and grass -
— Come To Light
مَّتَـٰعًۭا (As) a provision لَّكُمْ for you وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ and for your cattle ٣٢
[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
— Come To Light
فَإِذَا But when جَآءَتِ comes ٱلصَّآخَّةُ the Deafening Blast ٣٣
But when there comes the Deafening Blast
— Come To Light
يَوْمَ (The) Day يَفِرُّ will flee ٱلْمَرْءُ a man مِنْ from أَخِيهِ his brother ٣٤
On the Day a man will flee from his brother
— Come To Light
وَأُمِّهِۦ And his mother وَأَبِيهِ and his father ٣٥
And his mother and his father
— Come To Light
وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ And his wife وَبَنِيهِ and his children ٣٦
And his wife and his children,
— Come To Light
لِكُلِّ For every ٱمْرِئٍۢ man مِّنْهُمْ among them يَوْمَئِذٍۢ that Day شَأْنٌۭ (will be) a matter يُغْنِيهِ occupying him ٣٧
For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him.
— Come To Light
وُجُوهٌۭ Faces يَوْمَئِذٍۢ that Day مُّسْفِرَةٌۭ (will be) bright ٣٨
[Some] faces, that Day, will be bright -
— Come To Light
ضَاحِكَةٌۭ Laughing مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌۭ rejoicing at good news ٣٩
Laughing, rejoicing at good news.
— Come To Light
وَوُجُوهٌۭ And faces يَوْمَئِذٍ that Day عَلَيْهَا upon them غَبَرَةٌۭ (will be) dust ٤٠
And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust.
— Come To Light
تَرْهَقُهَا Will cover them قَتَرَةٌ darkness ٤١
Blackness will cover them.
— Come To Light
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those هُمُ [they] ٱلْكَفَرَةُ (are) the disbelievers ٱلْفَجَرَةُ the wicked ones ٤٢
Those are the disbelievers, the wicked ones.
— Come To Light
