طسٓ ۚ Ta Seen تِلْكَ These ءَايَـٰتُ (are the) Verses ٱلْقُرْءَانِ (of) the Quran وَكِتَابٍۢ and a Book مُّبِينٍ clear ١
Ṭā, Seen. These are the verses of the Qur’ān [i.e., recitation] and a clear Book
— Come To Light
27. Surah An-Naml
The Ant · Makki · 93 Ayahs
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ
هُدًۭى A guidance وَبُشْرَىٰ and glad tidings لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ for the believers ٢
As guidance and good tidings for the believers
— Come To Light
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who يُقِيمُونَ establish ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ the prayer وَيُؤْتُونَ and give ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ zakah وَهُم and they بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ in the Hereafter هُمْ [they] يُوقِنُونَ believe with certainty ٣
Who establish prayer and give zakāh, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed ٱلَّذِينَ those who لَا (do) not يُؤْمِنُونَ believe بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ in the Hereafter زَيَّنَّا We have made fair-seeming لَهُمْ to them أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ their deeds فَهُمْ so they يَعْمَهُونَ wander blindly ٤
Indeed, for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made pleasing to them their deeds, so they wander blindly.
— Come To Light
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ٱلَّذِينَ (are) the ones لَهُمْ for them سُوٓءُ (is) an evil ٱلْعَذَابِ [the] punishment وَهُمْ and they فِى in ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ the Hereafter هُمُ [they] ٱلْأَخْسَرُونَ (will be) the greatest losers ٥
Those are the ones for whom there will be the worst of punishment, and in the Hereafter they are the greatest losers.
— Come To Light
وَإِنَّكَ And indeed, you لَتُلَقَّى surely, receive ٱلْقُرْءَانَ the Quran مِن from [near] لَّدُنْ from [near] حَكِيمٍ the All-Wise عَلِيمٍ the All-Knower ٦
And indeed, [O Muḥammad], you receive the Qur’ān from one Wise and Knowing.
— Come To Light
إِذْ When قَالَ said مُوسَىٰ Musa لِأَهْلِهِۦٓ to his family إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I ءَانَسْتُ perceive نَارًۭا a fire سَـَٔاتِيكُم I will bring you مِّنْهَا from it بِخَبَرٍ some information أَوْ or ءَاتِيكُم I will bring you بِشِهَابٍۢ a torch قَبَسٍۢ burning لَّعَلَّكُمْ so that you may تَصْطَلُونَ warm yourselves ٧
[Mention] when Moses said to his family, "Indeed, I have perceived a fire. I will bring you from there information or will bring you a burning torch that you may warm yourselves."
— Come To Light
فَلَمَّا But when جَآءَهَا he came to it نُودِىَ he was called أَنۢ [that] بُورِكَ Blessed is مَن who فِى (is) at ٱلنَّارِ the fire وَمَنْ and whoever حَوْلَهَا (is) around it وَسُبْحَـٰنَ And glory be ٱللَّهِ (to) Allah رَبِّ (the) Lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds ٨
But when he came to it, he was called, "Blessed is whoever is at the fire and whoever is around it. And exalted is Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
— Come To Light
يَـٰمُوسَىٰٓ O Musa إِنَّهُۥٓ Indeed أَنَا I Am ٱللَّهُ Allah ٱلْعَزِيزُ the All-Mighty ٱلْحَكِيمُ the All-Wise ٩
O Moses, indeed it is I - Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
— Come To Light
وَأَلْقِ And, "Throw عَصَاكَ ۚ your staff فَلَمَّا But when رَءَاهَا he saw it تَهْتَزُّ moving كَأَنَّهَا as if it جَآنٌّۭ (were) a snake وَلَّىٰ he turned back مُدْبِرًۭا (in) flight وَلَمْ and (did) not يُعَقِّبْ ۚ look back يَـٰمُوسَىٰ O Musa لَا (Do) not تَخَفْ fear إِنِّى Indeed, [I] لَا (do) not يَخَافُ fear لَدَىَّ (in) My presence ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ the Messengers ١٠
And [he was told], "Throw down your staff." But when he saw it writhing as if it were a snake, he turned in flight and did not return. [Allāh said], "O Moses, fear not. Indeed, in My presence the messengers do not fear.
— Come To Light
إِلَّا Except مَن who ظَلَمَ wrongs ثُمَّ then بَدَّلَ substitutes حُسْنًۢا good بَعْدَ after سُوٓءٍۢ evil فَإِنِّى then indeed, I Am غَفُورٌۭ Oft-Forgiving رَّحِيمٌۭ Most Merciful ١١
Otherwise, he who wrongs, then substitutes good after evil - indeed, I am Forgiving and Merciful.
— Come To Light
وَأَدْخِلْ And enter يَدَكَ your hand فِى into جَيْبِكَ your bosom تَخْرُجْ it will come forth بَيْضَآءَ white مِنْ without غَيْرِ without سُوٓءٍۢ ۖ harm فِى (These are) among تِسْعِ nine ءَايَـٰتٍ signs إِلَىٰ to فِرْعَوْنَ Firaun وَقَوْمِهِۦٓ ۚ and his people إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they كَانُوا۟ are قَوْمًۭا a people فَـٰسِقِينَ defiantly disobedient ١٢
And put your hand into the opening of your garment [at the breast]; it will come out white without disease. [These are] among the nine signs [you will take] to Pharaoh and his people. Indeed, they have been a people defiantly disobedient."
— Come To Light
فَلَمَّا But when جَآءَتْهُمْ came to them ءَايَـٰتُنَا Our Signs مُبْصِرَةًۭ visible قَالُوا۟ they said هَـٰذَا This سِحْرٌۭ (is) a magic مُّبِينٌۭ manifest ١٣
But when there came to them Our visible signs, they said, "This is obvious magic."
— Come To Light
وَجَحَدُوا۟ And they rejected بِهَا them وَٱسْتَيْقَنَتْهَآ though were convinced with them (signs) أَنفُسُهُمْ themselves ظُلْمًۭا (out of) injustice وَعُلُوًّۭا ۚ and haughtiness فَٱنظُرْ So see كَيْفَ how كَانَ was عَـٰقِبَةُ (the) end ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ (of) the corrupters ١٤
And they rejected them, while their [inner] selves were convinced thereof, out of injustice and haughtiness. So see how was the end of the corrupters.
— Come To Light
وَلَقَدْ And verily ءَاتَيْنَا We gave دَاوُۥدَ Dawood وَسُلَيْمَـٰنَ and Sulaiman عِلْمًۭا ۖ knowledge وَقَالَا and they said ٱلْحَمْدُ Praise be لِلَّهِ to Allah ٱلَّذِى the One Who فَضَّلَنَا has favored us عَلَىٰ over كَثِيرٍۢ many مِّنْ of عِبَادِهِ His servants ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ the believers ١٥
And We had certainly given to David and Solomon knowledge, and they said, "Praise [is due] to Allāh, who has favored us over many of His believing servants."
— Come To Light
وَوَرِثَ And inherited سُلَيْمَـٰنُ Sulaiman دَاوُۥدَ ۖ Dawood وَقَالَ And he said يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O ٱلنَّاسُ people عُلِّمْنَا We have been taught مَنطِقَ (the) language ٱلطَّيْرِ (of) the birds وَأُوتِينَا and we have been given مِن from كُلِّ every شَىْءٍ ۖ thing إِنَّ Indeed هَـٰذَا this لَهُوَ surely, it ٱلْفَضْلُ (is) the favor ٱلْمُبِينُ evident ١٦
And Solomon inherited David. He said, "O people, we have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given from all things. Indeed, this is evident bounty."
— Come To Light
وَحُشِرَ And were gathered لِسُلَيْمَـٰنَ for Sulaiman جُنُودُهُۥ his hosts مِنَ of ٱلْجِنِّ jinn وَٱلْإِنسِ and the men وَٱلطَّيْرِ and the birds فَهُمْ and they يُوزَعُونَ (were) set in rows ١٧
And gathered for Solomon were his soldiers of the jinn and men and birds, and they were [marching] in rows
— Come To Light
حَتَّىٰٓ Until إِذَآ when أَتَوْا۟ they came عَلَىٰ to وَادِ (the) valley ٱلنَّمْلِ (of) the ants قَالَتْ said نَمْلَةٌۭ an ant يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O ٱلنَّمْلُ ants ٱدْخُلُوا۟ Enter مَسَـٰكِنَكُمْ your dwellings لَا lest not crush you يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ lest not crush you سُلَيْمَـٰنُ Sulaiman وَجُنُودُهُۥ and his hosts وَهُمْ while they لَا (do) not perceive يَشْعُرُونَ (do) not perceive ١٨
Until, when they came upon the valley of the ants, an ant said, "O ants, enter your dwellings that you not be crushed by Solomon and his soldiers while they perceive not."
— Come To Light
فَتَبَسَّمَ So he smiled ضَاحِكًۭا laughing مِّن at قَوْلِهَا her speech وَقَالَ and said رَبِّ My Lord أَوْزِعْنِىٓ Grant me (the) power أَنْ that أَشْكُرَ I may thank You نِعْمَتَكَ (for) Your Favor ٱلَّتِىٓ which أَنْعَمْتَ You have bestowed عَلَىَّ on me وَعَلَىٰ and on وَٰلِدَىَّ my parents وَأَنْ and that أَعْمَلَ I may do صَـٰلِحًۭا righteous (deeds) تَرْضَىٰهُ that will please You وَأَدْخِلْنِى And admit me بِرَحْمَتِكَ by Your Mercy فِى among عِبَادِكَ Your slaves ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ righteous ١٩
So [Solomon] smiled, amused at her speech, and said, "My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to do righteousness of which You approve. And admit me by Your mercy into [the ranks of] Your righteous servants."
— Come To Light
وَتَفَقَّدَ And he inspected ٱلطَّيْرَ the birds فَقَالَ and said مَا Why لِىَ Why لَآ not أَرَى I see ٱلْهُدْهُدَ the hoopoe أَمْ or كَانَ is he مِنَ from ٱلْغَآئِبِينَ the absent ٢٠
And he took attendance of the birds and said, "Why do I not see the hoopoe - or is he among the absent?
— Come To Light
لَأُعَذِّبَنَّهُۥ I will surely punish him عَذَابًۭا (with) a punishment شَدِيدًا severe أَوْ or لَأَا۟ذْبَحَنَّهُۥٓ I will surely slaughter him أَوْ unless لَيَأْتِيَنِّى he brings me بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ a reason مُّبِينٍۢ clear ٢١
I will surely punish him with a severe punishment or slaughter him unless he brings me clear authorization."
— Come To Light
فَمَكَثَ So he stayed غَيْرَ not بَعِيدٍۢ long فَقَالَ and he said أَحَطتُ I have encompassed بِمَا that which لَمْ not تُحِطْ you have encompassed بِهِۦ it وَجِئْتُكَ and I have come to you مِن from سَبَإٍۭ Saba بِنَبَإٍۢ with news يَقِينٍ certain ٢٢
But he [i.e., the hoopoe] stayed not long and said, "I have encompassed [in knowledge] that which you have not encompassed, and I have come to you from Sheba with certain news.
— Come To Light
إِنِّى Indeed, I وَجَدتُّ found ٱمْرَأَةًۭ a woman تَمْلِكُهُمْ ruling them وَأُوتِيَتْ and she has been given مِن of كُلِّ every شَىْءٍۢ thing وَلَهَا and for her عَرْشٌ (is) a throne عَظِيمٌۭ great ٢٣
Indeed, I found [there] a woman ruling them, and she has been given of all things, and she has a great throne.
— Come To Light
وَجَدتُّهَا And I found her وَقَوْمَهَا and her people يَسْجُدُونَ prostrating لِلشَّمْسِ to the sun مِن instead of Allah دُونِ instead of Allah ٱللَّهِ instead of Allah وَزَيَّنَ and has made fair-seeming لَهُمُ to them ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ the Shaitaan أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ their deeds فَصَدَّهُمْ and averted them عَنِ from ٱلسَّبِيلِ the Way فَهُمْ so they لَا (are) not يَهْتَدُونَ guided ٢٤
I found her and her people prostrating to the sun instead of Allāh, and Satan has made their deeds pleasing to them and averted them from [His] way, so they are not guided,
— Come To Light
أَلَّا That not يَسْجُدُوا۟ they prostrate لِلَّهِ to Allah ٱلَّذِى the One Who يُخْرِجُ brings forth ٱلْخَبْءَ the hidden فِى in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth وَيَعْلَمُ and knows مَا what تُخْفُونَ you conceal وَمَا and what تُعْلِنُونَ you declare ٢٥
[And] so they do not prostrate to Allāh, who brings forth what is hidden within the heavens and the earth and knows what you conceal and what you declare -
— Come To Light
ٱللَّهُ Allah لَآ (there is) no إِلَـٰهَ god إِلَّا but هُوَ He رَبُّ (the) Lord ٱلْعَرْشِ (of) the Throne ٱلْعَظِيمِ ۩ the Great ٢٦
Allāh - there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Great Throne."
— Come To Light
۞ قَالَ He said سَنَنظُرُ We will see أَصَدَقْتَ whether you speak (the) truth أَمْ or كُنتَ you are مِنَ of ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ the liars ٢٧
[Solomon] said, "We will see whether you were truthful or were of the liars.
— Come To Light
ٱذْهَب Go بِّكِتَـٰبِى with my letter هَـٰذَا this فَأَلْقِهْ and deliver it إِلَيْهِمْ to them ثُمَّ Then تَوَلَّ turn away عَنْهُمْ from them فَٱنظُرْ and see مَاذَا what يَرْجِعُونَ they return ٢٨
Take this letter of mine and deliver it to them. Then leave them and see what [answer] they will return."
— Come To Light
قَالَتْ She said يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ chiefs إِنِّىٓ Indeed [I] أُلْقِىَ is delivered إِلَىَّ to me كِتَـٰبٌۭ a letter كَرِيمٌ noble ٢٩
She said, "O eminent ones, indeed, to me has been delivered a noble letter.
— Come To Light
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it مِن (is) from سُلَيْمَـٰنَ Sulaiman وَإِنَّهُۥ and indeed it (is) بِسْمِ In the name ٱللَّهِ (of) Allah ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ the Most Gracious ٱلرَّحِيمِ the Most Merciful ٣٠
Indeed, it is from Solomon, and indeed, it is [i.e., reads]: 'In the name of Allāh, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,
— Come To Light
أَلَّا That not تَعْلُوا۟ exalt yourselves عَلَىَّ against me وَأْتُونِى but come to me مُسْلِمِينَ (in) submission ٣١
Be not haughty with me but come to me in submission [as Muslims].'"
— Come To Light
قَالَتْ She said يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ chiefs أَفْتُونِى Advise me فِىٓ in أَمْرِى my affair مَا Not كُنتُ I would be قَاطِعَةً the one to decide أَمْرًا any matter حَتَّىٰ until تَشْهَدُونِ you are present with me ٣٢
She said, "O eminent ones, advise me in my affair. I would not decide a matter until you witness [for] me."
— Come To Light
قَالُوا۟ They said نَحْنُ We أُو۟لُوا۟ (are) possessors قُوَّةٍۢ (of) strength وَأُو۟لُوا۟ and possessors بَأْسٍۢ (of) might شَدِيدٍۢ great وَٱلْأَمْرُ and the command إِلَيْكِ (is) up to you فَٱنظُرِى so look مَاذَا what تَأْمُرِينَ you will command ٣٣
They said, "We are men of strength and of great military might, but the command is yours, so see what you will command."
— Come To Light
قَالَتْ She said إِنَّ Indeed ٱلْمُلُوكَ the kings إِذَا when دَخَلُوا۟ they enter قَرْيَةً a town أَفْسَدُوهَا they ruin it وَجَعَلُوٓا۟ and make أَعِزَّةَ (the) most honorable أَهْلِهَآ (of) its people أَذِلَّةًۭ ۖ (the) lowest وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus يَفْعَلُونَ they do ٣٤
She said, "Indeed kings - when they enter a city, they ruin it and render the honored of its people humbled. And thus do they do.
— Come To Light
وَإِنِّى But indeed, I am مُرْسِلَةٌ going to send إِلَيْهِم to them بِهَدِيَّةٍۢ a gift فَنَاظِرَةٌۢ and see بِمَ with what يَرْجِعُ return ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ the messengers ٣٥
But indeed, I will send to them a gift and see with what [reply] the messengers will return."
— Come To Light
فَلَمَّا So when جَآءَ came سُلَيْمَـٰنَ (to) Sulaiman قَالَ he said أَتُمِدُّونَنِ Will you provide me بِمَالٍۢ with wealth فَمَآ But what ءَاتَىٰنِۦَ Allah has given me ٱللَّهُ Allah has given me خَيْرٌۭ (is) better مِّمَّآ than what ءَاتَىٰكُم He has given you بَلْ Nay أَنتُم you بِهَدِيَّتِكُمْ in your gift تَفْرَحُونَ rejoice ٣٦
So when they came to Solomon, he said, "Do you provide me with wealth? But what Allāh has given me is better than what He has given you. Rather, it is you who rejoice in your gift.
— Come To Light
ٱرْجِعْ Return إِلَيْهِمْ to them فَلَنَأْتِيَنَّهُم surely, we will come to them بِجُنُودٍۢ with hosts لَّا not قِبَلَ (is) resistance لَهُم for them بِهَا of it وَلَنُخْرِجَنَّهُم and surely, we will drive them out مِّنْهَآ from there أَذِلَّةًۭ (in) humiliation وَهُمْ and they صَـٰغِرُونَ (will be) abased ٣٧
Return to them, for we will surely come to them with soldiers that they will be powerless to encounter, and we will surely expel them therefrom in humiliation, and they will be debased."
— Come To Light
قَالَ He said يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O ٱلْمَلَؤُا۟ chiefs أَيُّكُمْ Which of you يَأْتِينِى will bring me بِعَرْشِهَا her throne قَبْلَ before أَن that يَأْتُونِى they come to me مُسْلِمِينَ (in) submission ٣٨
[Solomon] said, "O assembly [of jinn], which of you will bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?"
— Come To Light
قَالَ Said عِفْرِيتٌۭ a strong one مِّنَ of ٱلْجِنِّ the jinn أَنَا۠ I ءَاتِيكَ will bring it to you بِهِۦ will bring it to you قَبْلَ before أَن [that] تَقُومَ you rise مِن from مَّقَامِكَ ۖ your place وَإِنِّى And indeed, I am عَلَيْهِ for it لَقَوِىٌّ surely, strong أَمِينٌۭ trustworthy ٣٩
A powerful one from among the jinn said, "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place, and indeed, I am for this [task] strong and trustworthy."
— Come To Light
قَالَ Said ٱلَّذِى one who عِندَهُۥ with him عِلْمٌۭ (was) knowledge مِّنَ of ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ the Scripture أَنَا۠ I ءَاتِيكَ will bring it to you بِهِۦ will bring it to you قَبْلَ before أَن [that] يَرْتَدَّ returns إِلَيْكَ to you طَرْفُكَ ۚ your glance فَلَمَّا Then when رَءَاهُ he saw it مُسْتَقِرًّا placed عِندَهُۥ before him قَالَ he said هَـٰذَا This مِن (is) from فَضْلِ (the) Favor رَبِّى (of) my Lord لِيَبْلُوَنِىٓ to test me ءَأَشْكُرُ whether I am grateful أَمْ or أَكْفُرُ ۖ I am ungrateful وَمَن And whoever شَكَرَ (is) grateful فَإِنَّمَا then only يَشْكُرُ he is grateful لِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ for his own soul وَمَن And whoever كَفَرَ (is) ungrateful فَإِنَّ then indeed رَبِّى my Lord غَنِىٌّۭ (is) Self-sufficient كَرِيمٌۭ Noble ٤٠
Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous."
— Come To Light
قَالَ He said نَكِّرُوا۟ Disguise لَهَا for her عَرْشَهَا her throne نَنظُرْ we will see أَتَهْتَدِىٓ whether she will be guided أَمْ or تَكُونُ will be مِنَ of ٱلَّذِينَ those who لَا are not guided يَهْتَدُونَ are not guided ٤١
He said, "Disguise for her her throne; we will see whether she will be guided [to truth] or will be of those who is not guided."
— Come To Light
فَلَمَّا So when جَآءَتْ she came قِيلَ it was said أَهَـٰكَذَا Is like this عَرْشُكِ ۖ your throne قَالَتْ She said كَأَنَّهُۥ It is like هُوَ ۚ it وَأُوتِينَا And we were given ٱلْعِلْمَ the knowledge مِن before her قَبْلِهَا before her وَكُنَّا and we have been مُسْلِمِينَ Muslims ٤٢
So when she arrived, it was said [to her], "Is your throne like this?" She said, "[It is] as though it was it." [Solomon said], "And we were given knowledge before her, and we have been Muslims [in submission to Allāh].
— Come To Light
وَصَدَّهَا And has averted her مَا what كَانَت she used (to) تَّعْبُدُ worship مِن besides دُونِ besides ٱللَّهِ ۖ Allah إِنَّهَا Indeed, she كَانَتْ was مِن from قَوْمٍۢ a people كَـٰفِرِينَ who disbelieve ٤٣
And that which she was worshipping other than Allāh had averted her [from submission to Him]. Indeed, she was from a disbelieving people."
— Come To Light
قِيلَ It was said لَهَا to her ٱدْخُلِى Enter ٱلصَّرْحَ ۖ the palace فَلَمَّا Then when رَأَتْهُ she saw it حَسِبَتْهُ she thought it لُجَّةًۭ (was) a pool وَكَشَفَتْ and she uncovered عَن [on] سَاقَيْهَا ۚ her shins قَالَ He said إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it صَرْحٌۭ (is) a palace مُّمَرَّدٌۭ made smooth مِّن of قَوَارِيرَ ۗ glass قَالَتْ She said رَبِّ My Lord إِنِّى indeed, I ظَلَمْتُ [I] have wronged نَفْسِى myself وَأَسْلَمْتُ and I submit مَعَ with سُلَيْمَـٰنَ Sulaiman لِلَّهِ to Allah رَبِّ (the) Lord ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ (of) the worlds ٤٤
She was told, "Enter the palace." But when she saw it, she thought it was a body of water and uncovered her shins [to wade through]. He said, "Indeed, it is a palace [whose floor is] made smooth with glass." She said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, and I submit with Solomon to Allāh, Lord of the worlds."

وَلَقَدْ And certainly أَرْسَلْنَآ We sent إِلَىٰ to ثَمُودَ Thamud أَخَاهُمْ their brother صَـٰلِحًا Salih أَنِ that ٱعْبُدُوا۟ Worship ٱللَّهَ Allah فَإِذَا Then behold هُمْ They فَرِيقَانِ (became) two parties يَخْتَصِمُونَ quarreling ٤٥
And We had certainly sent to Thamūd their brother Ṣāliḥ, [saying], "Worship Allāh," and at once they were two parties conflicting.
— Come To Light
قَالَ He said يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people لِمَ Why تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ (do) you seek to hasten بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ the evil قَبْلَ before ٱلْحَسَنَةِ ۖ the good لَوْلَا Why not تَسْتَغْفِرُونَ you ask forgiveness ٱللَّهَ (of) Allah لَعَلَّكُمْ so that you may تُرْحَمُونَ receive mercy ٤٦
He said, "O my people, why are you impatient for evil before [i.e., instead of] good? Why do you not seek forgiveness of Allāh that you may receive mercy?"
— Come To Light
قَالُوا۟ They said ٱطَّيَّرْنَا We consider you a bad omen بِكَ We consider you a bad omen وَبِمَن and those مَّعَكَ ۚ with you قَالَ He said طَـٰٓئِرُكُمْ Your bad omen عِندَ (is) with ٱللَّهِ ۖ Allah بَلْ Nay أَنتُمْ you قَوْمٌۭ (are) a people تُفْتَنُونَ being tested ٤٧
They said, "We consider you a bad omen, you and those with you." He said, "Your omen [i.e., fate] is with Allāh. Rather, you are a people being tested."
— Come To Light
وَكَانَ And were فِى in ٱلْمَدِينَةِ the city تِسْعَةُ nine رَهْطٍۢ family heads يُفْسِدُونَ they were spreading corruption فِى in ٱلْأَرْضِ the land وَلَا and not يُصْلِحُونَ reforming ٤٨
And there were in the city nine family heads causing corruption in the land and not amending [its affairs].
— Come To Light
قَالُوا۟ They said تَقَاسَمُوا۟ Swear to each other بِٱللَّهِ by Allah لَنُبَيِّتَنَّهُۥ surely, we will attack him by night وَأَهْلَهُۥ and his family ثُمَّ Then لَنَقُولَنَّ we will surely say لِوَلِيِّهِۦ to his heir مَا Not شَهِدْنَا we witnessed مَهْلِكَ (the) destruction أَهْلِهِۦ (of) his family وَإِنَّا and indeed, we لَصَـٰدِقُونَ (are) surely truthful ٤٩
They said, "Take a mutual oath by Allāh that we will kill him by night, he and his family. Then we will say to his executor, 'We did not witness the destruction of his family, and indeed, we are truthful.'"
— Come To Light
وَمَكَرُوا۟ So they plotted مَكْرًۭا a plot وَمَكَرْنَا and We planned مَكْرًۭا a plan وَهُمْ while they لَا (did) not يَشْعُرُونَ perceive ٥٠
And they planned a plan, and We planned a plan, while they perceived not.
— Come To Light
فَٱنظُرْ Then see كَيْفَ how كَانَ was عَـٰقِبَةُ (the) end مَكْرِهِمْ (of) their plot أَنَّا that We دَمَّرْنَـٰهُمْ destroyed them وَقَوْمَهُمْ and their people أَجْمَعِينَ all ٥١
Then look how was the outcome of their plan - that We destroyed them and their people, all.
— Come To Light
فَتِلْكَ So, these بُيُوتُهُمْ (are) their houses خَاوِيَةًۢ ruined بِمَا because ظَلَمُوٓا۟ ۗ they wronged إِنَّ Indeed فِى in ذَٰلِكَ that لَـَٔايَةًۭ surely, is a sign لِّقَوْمٍۢ for a people يَعْلَمُونَ who know ٥٢
So those are their houses, desolate because of the wrong they had done. Indeed in that is a sign for people who know.
— Come To Light
وَأَنجَيْنَا And We saved ٱلَّذِينَ those who ءَامَنُوا۟ believed وَكَانُوا۟ and used (to) يَتَّقُونَ fear (Allah) ٥٣
And We saved those who believed and used to fear Allāh.
— Come To Light
وَلُوطًا And Lut إِذْ when قَالَ he said لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ to his people أَتَأْتُونَ Do you commit ٱلْفَـٰحِشَةَ [the] immorality وَأَنتُمْ while you تُبْصِرُونَ see ٥٤
And [mention] Lot, when he said to his people, "Do you commit immorality while you are seeing?
— Come To Light
أَئِنَّكُمْ Why do you لَتَأْتُونَ approach ٱلرِّجَالَ the men شَهْوَةًۭ (with) lust مِّن instead of دُونِ instead of ٱلنِّسَآءِ ۚ the women بَلْ Nay أَنتُمْ you قَوْمٌۭ (are) a people تَجْهَلُونَ ignorant ٥٥
Do you indeed approach men with desire instead of women? Rather, you are a people behaving ignorantly."
— Come To Light
۞ فَمَا But not كَانَ was جَوَابَ (the) answer قَوْمِهِۦٓ (of) his people إِلَّآ except أَن that قَالُوٓا۟ they said أَخْرِجُوٓا۟ Drive out ءَالَ (the) family لُوطٍۢ (of) Lut مِّن from قَرْيَتِكُمْ ۖ your town إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they أُنَاسٌۭ (are) people يَتَطَهَّرُونَ who keep clean and pure ٥٦
But the answer of his people was not except that they said, "Expel the family of Lot from your city. Indeed, they are people who keep themselves pure."
— Come To Light
فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ So We saved him وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ and his family إِلَّا except ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ his wife قَدَّرْنَـٰهَا We destined her مِنَ (to be) of ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ those who remained behind ٥٧
So We saved him and his family, except for his wife; We destined her to be of those who remained behind.
— Come To Light
وَأَمْطَرْنَا And We rained عَلَيْهِم upon them مَّطَرًۭا ۖ a rain فَسَآءَ and was evil مَطَرُ (the) rain ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ (on) those who were warned ٥٨
And We rained upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were warned.
— Come To Light
قُلِ Say ٱلْحَمْدُ All praise (be) لِلَّهِ to Allah وَسَلَـٰمٌ and peace (be) عَلَىٰ upon عِبَادِهِ His slaves ٱلَّذِينَ those whom ٱصْطَفَىٰٓ ۗ He has chosen ءَآللَّهُ Is Allah خَيْرٌ better أَمَّا or what يُشْرِكُونَ they associate (with Him) ٥٩
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Praise be to Allāh, and peace upon His servants whom He has chosen. Is Allāh better or what they associate with Him?"
— Come To Light
أَمَّنْ Or Who خَلَقَ has created ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضَ and the earth وَأَنزَلَ and sent down لَكُم for you مِّنَ from ٱلسَّمَآءِ the sky مَآءًۭ water فَأَنۢبَتْنَا And We caused to grow بِهِۦ thereby حَدَآئِقَ gardens ذَاتَ of beauty (and delight) بَهْجَةٍۢ of beauty (and delight) مَّا not كَانَ it is لَكُمْ for you أَن that تُنۢبِتُوا۟ you cause to grow شَجَرَهَآ ۗ their trees أَءِلَـٰهٌۭ Is there any god مَّعَ with ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah بَلْ Nay هُمْ they قَوْمٌۭ (are) a people يَعْدِلُونَ who ascribe equals ٦٠
[More precisely], is He [not best] who created the heavens and the earth and sent down for you rain from the sky, causing to grow thereby gardens of joyful beauty which you could not [otherwise] have grown the trees thereof? Is there a deity with Allāh? [No], but they are a people who ascribe equals [to Him].
— Come To Light
أَمَّن Or Who جَعَلَ made ٱلْأَرْضَ the earth قَرَارًۭا a firm abode وَجَعَلَ and made خِلَـٰلَهَآ (in) its midst أَنْهَـٰرًۭا rivers وَجَعَلَ and made لَهَا for it رَوَٰسِىَ firm mountains وَجَعَلَ and made بَيْنَ between ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ the two seas حَاجِزًا ۗ a barrier أَءِلَـٰهٌۭ Is there any god مَّعَ with ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah بَلْ Nay أَكْثَرُهُمْ most of them لَا (do) not يَعْلَمُونَ know ٦١
Is He [not best] who made the earth a stable ground and placed within it rivers and made for it firmly set mountains and placed between the two seas a barrier? Is there a deity with Allāh? [No], but most of them do not know.
— Come To Light
أَمَّن Or Who يُجِيبُ responds ٱلْمُضْطَرَّ (to) the distressed one إِذَا when دَعَاهُ he calls Him وَيَكْشِفُ and He removes ٱلسُّوٓءَ the evil وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ and makes you خُلَفَآءَ inheritors ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ (of) the earth أَءِلَـٰهٌۭ Is there any god مَّعَ with ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah قَلِيلًۭا Little مَّا (is) what تَذَكَّرُونَ you remember ٦٢
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth? Is there a deity with Allāh? Little do you remember.
— Come To Light
أَمَّن Or Who يَهْدِيكُمْ guides you فِى in ظُلُمَـٰتِ (the) darkness[es] ٱلْبَرِّ (of) the land وَٱلْبَحْرِ and the sea وَمَن and Who يُرْسِلُ sends ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ the winds بُشْرًۢا (as) glad tidings بَيْنَ before يَدَىْ before رَحْمَتِهِۦٓ ۗ His Mercy أَءِلَـٰهٌۭ Is there any god مَّعَ with ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah تَعَـٰلَى High is ٱللَّهُ Allah عَمَّا above what يُشْرِكُونَ they associate (with Him) ٦٣
Is He [not best] who guides you through the darknesses of the land and sea and who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy? Is there a deity with Allāh? High is Allāh above whatever they associate with Him.
— Come To Light
أَمَّن Or Who يَبْدَؤُا۟ originates ٱلْخَلْقَ the creation ثُمَّ then يُعِيدُهُۥ repeats it وَمَن and Who يَرْزُقُكُم provides you مِّنَ from ٱلسَّمَآءِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ and the earth أَءِلَـٰهٌۭ Is there any god مَّعَ with ٱللَّهِ ۚ Allah قُلْ Say هَاتُوا۟ Bring forth بُرْهَـٰنَكُمْ your proof إِن if كُنتُمْ you are صَـٰدِقِينَ truthful ٦٤
Is He [not best] who begins creation and then repeats it and who provides for you from the heaven and earth? Is there a deity with Allāh? Say, "Produce your proof, if you should be truthful."
— Come To Light
قُل Say لَّا No (one) يَعْلَمُ knows مَن whoever فِى (is) in ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth ٱلْغَيْبَ (of) the unseen إِلَّا except ٱللَّهُ ۚ Allah وَمَا and not يَشْعُرُونَ they perceive أَيَّانَ when يُبْعَثُونَ they will be resurrected ٦٥
Say, "None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allāh, and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected."
— Come To Light
بَلِ Nay ٱدَّٰرَكَ is arrested عِلْمُهُمْ their knowledge فِى of ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ the Hereafter بَلْ Nay هُمْ they فِى (are) in شَكٍّۢ doubt مِّنْهَا ۖ about it بَلْ Nay هُم they مِّنْهَا about it عَمُونَ (are) blind ٦٦
Rather, their knowledge is arrested concerning the Hereafter. Rather, they are in doubt about it. Rather, they are, concerning it, blind.
— Come To Light
وَقَالَ And say ٱلَّذِينَ those who كَفَرُوٓا۟ disbelieve أَءِذَا What, when كُنَّا we have become تُرَٰبًۭا dust وَءَابَآؤُنَآ and our forefathers أَئِنَّا will we لَمُخْرَجُونَ surely be brought out ٦٧
And those who disbelieve say, "When we have become dust as well as our forefathers, will we indeed be brought out [of the graves]?
— Come To Light
لَقَدْ Certainly وُعِدْنَا we have been promised هَـٰذَا this نَحْنُ we وَءَابَآؤُنَا and our forefathers مِن before قَبْلُ before إِنْ Not هَـٰذَآ (is) this إِلَّآ except أَسَـٰطِيرُ tales ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ (of) the former (people) ٦٨
We have been promised this, we and our forefathers, before. This is not but legends of the former peoples."
— Come To Light
قُلْ Say سِيرُوا۟ Travel فِى in ٱلْأَرْضِ the land فَٱنظُرُوا۟ and see كَيْفَ how كَانَ was عَـٰقِبَةُ (the) end ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ (of) the criminals ٦٩
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Proceed [i.e., travel] through the land and observe how was the end of the criminals."
— Come To Light
وَلَا And (do) not تَحْزَنْ grieve عَلَيْهِمْ over them وَلَا and not تَكُن be فِى in ضَيْقٍۢ distress مِّمَّا from what يَمْكُرُونَ they plot ٧٠
And grieve not over them or be in distress from what they conspire.
— Come To Light
وَيَقُولُونَ And they say مَتَىٰ When هَـٰذَا (will) this ٱلْوَعْدُ promise (be fulfilled) إِن if كُنتُمْ you are صَـٰدِقِينَ truthful ٧١
And they say, "When is [the fulfillment of] this promise, if you should be truthful?"
— Come To Light
قُلْ Say عَسَىٰٓ Perhaps أَن that يَكُونَ is رَدِفَ close behind لَكُم you بَعْضُ some ٱلَّذِى (of) that which تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ you seek to hasten ٧٢
Say, "Perhaps it is close behind you [i.e., very near] - some of that for which you are impatient.
— Come To Light
وَإِنَّ And indeed رَبَّكَ your Lord لَذُو (is) full of Bounty فَضْلٍ (is) full of Bounty عَلَى for ٱلنَّاسِ the mankind وَلَـٰكِنَّ but أَكْثَرَهُمْ most of them لَا (are) not يَشْكُرُونَ grateful ٧٣
And indeed, your Lord is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of them are not grateful."
— Come To Light
وَإِنَّ And indeed رَبَّكَ your Lord لَيَعْلَمُ surely knows مَا what تُكِنُّ conceals صُدُورُهُمْ their breasts وَمَا and what يُعْلِنُونَ they declare ٧٤
And indeed, your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they declare.
— Come To Light
وَمَا And not (is) مِنْ any (thing) غَآئِبَةٍۢ hidden فِى in ٱلسَّمَآءِ the heavens وَٱلْأَرْضِ and the earth إِلَّا but فِى (is) in كِتَـٰبٍۢ a Record مُّبِينٍ clear ٧٥
And there is nothing concealed within the heaven and the earth except that it is in a clear Register.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed هَـٰذَا this ٱلْقُرْءَانَ [the] Quran يَقُصُّ relates عَلَىٰ to بَنِىٓ (the) Children إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ (of) Israel أَكْثَرَ most ٱلَّذِى (of) that هُمْ they فِيهِ in it يَخْتَلِفُونَ differ ٧٦
Indeed, this Qur’ān relates to the Children of Israel most of that over which they disagree.
— Come To Light
وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it لَهُدًۭى (is) surely a guidance وَرَحْمَةٌۭ and a mercy لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ for the believers ٧٧
And indeed, it is guidance and mercy for the believers.
— Come To Light
إِنَّ Indeed رَبَّكَ your Lord يَقْضِى will judge بَيْنَهُم between them بِحُكْمِهِۦ ۚ by His Judgment وَهُوَ and He ٱلْعَزِيزُ (is) the All-Mighty ٱلْعَلِيمُ the All-Knower ٧٨
Indeed, your Lord will judge between them by His [wise] judgement. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
— Come To Light
فَتَوَكَّلْ So put your trust عَلَى in ٱللَّهِ ۖ Allah إِنَّكَ indeed, you عَلَى (are) on ٱلْحَقِّ the truth ٱلْمُبِينِ manifest ٧٩
So rely upon Allāh; indeed, you are upon the clear truth.
— Come To Light
إِنَّكَ Indeed, you لَا (can) not تُسْمِعُ cause to hear ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ the dead وَلَا and not تُسْمِعُ can you cause to hear ٱلصُّمَّ the deaf ٱلدُّعَآءَ the call إِذَا when وَلَّوْا۟ they turn back مُدْبِرِينَ retreating ٨٠
Indeed, you will not make the dead hear, nor will you make the deaf hear the call when they have turned their backs retreating.
